[BUG] A Dark Legacy Quest Cannot Be Completed

Hi everyone, excuse me if this topic is already discussed, I had a little search through the forum and could not encounter one written in English.

SPOILERS AHEAD

For "A Dark Legacy" quest in Hearts of Stone expansion, I have cleaned Arnskrone Castle Ruins up and opened both chests, one by dismantling the figurine and obtaining the key from it. I also have the Black Unicorn Sword crafting diagram, but the quest is not completed and is still waiting for me to search the ruins. There is nothing else I can open or interact with.

There are people who faced this problem over the internet, yet there is no solution provided anywhere.

Can you help me solving this bug? I have the game on Steam on up-to-date Windows 10.

Thank you all!

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe that certain failsafes may have been put in place to ensure the game does not wind up in infinite loops or conflicts between quests. It seems that, sometimes, quests will fail to complete or will switch from "Completed" to "Failed" to ensure the game doesn't hang / crash / bork out.

I'm playing through again, and I have not encountered any such issues thus far. (Never encountered many issues during the last 4 playthroughs, either...so I'm largely speaking vestigially here...) From what I have seen, these issues are largely the result of one of 3 scenarios:

1.) Mods. Especially mods that affect how fast-travel works can utterly shatter quests if used at the wrong time.

2.) "Creative" play. I know that this sounds backwards for an "open world" game, but because of the narrative structure of many quests, bunny-hopping over mountains to save time, taking shortcuts to skip parts because players already know what to do, and/or doing things "out of their intended order" (starting a quest -- then starting 3 more quests -- then finishing the second quest -- before going back and finishing the first quest)...all of these things can throw the game for a loop. It may result in quest flags left hanging or instances of NPCs left in conflicting states.

3.) Doing a quest way outside of its meta order. For example, triggering a quest waaay over your level by mistake, then blundering into a hot-spot for an already active quest. I had that happen once with Hatori, I believe. Managed to totally break the game by accidentally triggering a random "!" quest when I went to meet Hatori on the docks...and he came up and started talking to me during a fight for the other quest...oh...it was interesting.

Basically, my rule of thumb is that if I notice anything that seems to be weirdness -- I immediately reload to an earlier point and play through again. And I just remembered! I did experience one, small thing this time around. Getting a certain armor set from a certain crypt at level 9 -- a Level 29 Ancient Leshan appeared in the middle of the cave instead of the enemy that should have been there. I was left blinking (and that was about all the time it took for the thing to one-shot me). Reloading to an earlier point and triggering the whole thing again, everything worked out perfectly. Sometimes, the game just does "things".

Hello SigilFey, thanks for the answer.

I'd like to say that I do not have any mod enabled, only the expansion packs are installed over the original game. My order of completing quests is simply finishing all the sidequests up to my level and then advancing on a main quests. This is a very robust way of playing the game in terms of story and gameplay, considering my around 200 hours of The Witcher 3 experience.

The quest I've mentioned is just a treasure hunt without any choice effect, so I don't strongly think there is some meta thing affecting this quest to stay incomplete. The quest does not have any flow to failure, it is just not yet completed although I've done everything to finish it.

But anyway I really do appreciate your reply and interest. Thank you again!

Yet I am still looking for help :/

Is the problem that you cannot complete the quest (progress is blocked), or that the journal is not resolving the quest (i.e. moving it under "Completed")? If it's a treasure hunt thing from the map, then once you have the associated diagram(s) at that location, that's pretty much it. You won't need to worry about unresolved treasure hunts...I don't think they have any impact on anything else. The more advanced maps to the next diagrams should appear in trader's inventories as soon as you hit a level threshold. It shouldn't matter whether the prior stages are completed. No worries there!

What you need to do is finish the quest "A Dark Legacy" before you even start " The Secret Life of Count Romilly" so do not loot the corpse once you find it. I know it's late but ran into the same problem :(

I ran into this bug also, I just reloaded the quick save from when I quick traveled to the castle, and opened the chest again. That resolved the issue.

Having the same issue in 2024....
Is there any way to use console to fix that? so quest moves to 'completed' section?
Im waaay ahead so can't really re-load previous save :/

For me quick save help i just reload fast travel again and when i searched all chests the quest has completed.
