If you choose to fight with them, after you defeat them, the Innkeeper don`t want to talk with you. So you can not buy thing from him(especialy Gwent Cards)... I think to advance in the game and have both - the The Nilfgaardian Connection completed & talking to Innkeeper to buy the cards(needed to make an achievement) you must let the "Defeat baron`s men" failed. Maybe someone from staff will make something about that error. I found another one like failed tree quest, in first map - if you stay to explore that map... and go to the hill where you find the griffin dead.. and after that you go to the main quest and talk to the commander and take the quest to kill the griffin, you cannot find the Hunter to show you the way to the hill with the griffin, you pass that tree quest and it s shows to you like failed.

The problem is i went with peaceful solution in the inn. Once I got to Baron's Keep I got attacked and had to go via cave. Hope a Red will notice this and fix in upcoming patch :) @GingerEffect - any idea what could have gone wrong ;) ?

This should clearly not be the case. Just to be sure, you had a drink with them or just...didn't challenge them during the conversation, yes?

If this is the case, please submit a message through here: http://en.cdprojektred.com/contact-support/

Include your savegame so we can properly debug what is going wrong in this case.

I start the game again and i not have the old save game is 3 options in the tavern i choose the neutral -im a witcher- and when i finnish the quest the fight Barons men task appear with red X..... i believe the option is for neutral and if the men not fighting u in the tavern there is no reason to have this task in the quest log with red X.

---------- Updated at 02:47 AM ----------

i check it again with the 3 options in my new game and i see if something wrong will happent again.

@GingerEffect
I had a drink with them. Innerkeeper thanked me etc. Red cross as failed appeared and when I got to baron's keep I got attacked. I progressed with the quest , got to Peller's Hut and baron's men still attacked me even when i did offer medicine for their friend. Since I progressed a bit, can a save from that stage (Peller) be ok?

Same happent with the 2 options the only viable option is to fight them, for some strange reason the task show up with X if u choose neutral or good .......

I have this on PS4 and I am having the issue described above where the quest has failed. I chose to buy everyone a drink. I haven't done the Bloody Baron quest yet, so should I hold off until this is patched?

---------- Updated at 04:33 PM ----------

Any update on this?

Same problem here. The only way to not have red cross in journal is to fight the Baron's men.

Is this happening to everyone who chooses not to fight the Baron's men? Also, when this is inevitably patched will it correct the quest log entry on current saves, or will it only fix new instances of this quest? In other words, once it is patched will I have to restart the game, or will the patch retroactively fix the quest log entry?

I'm having a similar issue with this quest. Only that I had killed the baron's men and later received the red failed journal update.
Below is a long explanation of what exactly happened, which I already submitted to support as per an earlier suggestion along with a save game:

The quest "The Nilfgaardian Connection" updated with the line "Defeat the baron's men" as red failed when I was already past that point and in Heatherton in Hendrik's hut, during the first quest update, that happens in that hut right after examining Hendrik's body and getting an update to Hendrik's character entry. I did defeat all of Baron's men at the Inn at the crossroads earlier though, except perhaps the one bandit that seemed to have asked a villager about hidden pigs and entered the villager's hut that afterwards had a locked door.

EDIT: I did count 6 dead bandits after, so it seemed the one who entered the hut came out to fight as well.

While I was at the "Inn at the Crossroads" I chose to drink with Baron's men who were labelled "bandits" and in the dialogue options I did not choose to insult them. I asked them questions during the timed drinking dialogue and it ended peacefully. Then the quest updated into the stage "Finish talking to the innkeep about the agent called Hendrik" during which the innkeep moved away from the counter to the other part of the inn. I saved at that point and watched as the Baron's three men, with whom I just had a peaceful drinking dialog, remain seated at the inn table. I listened to their conversation and found out that one of them had raped some villager's son or daughter.

I then walked out of the inn and saw the other three Baron's men labelled as "bandits" talking to villagers at three separate huts. One was checking on pigs and the other asking about a potential hidden daugther and a third about loot. Two of the bandits then walked back to their carriage infront of the inn.

At this point I decided these bandits do not deserve to live and went back into the inn to talk to the three "bandits" still seated at the table. I talked to the bandits twice. Pressed "E" etc. after which they became hostile, after which Geralt killed the three in the inn and the other three outside. I then proceeded to talk to the innkeeper, who after the dying bandit on the floor cutscene, said "Have you any idea what the baron'll do when he learns of this butchery?!" The conversation ended with the innkeep telling me about Hendrik and asking me to leave through the back door "Go out the back. More o' the baron's men in the village." At this point I had killed all the 6 "bandits".

I left the inn area to a nearby "?" that was a bandit camp and came back after which the innkeeper talked to me about Bloody Baron etc. and was willing to trade etc. I then proceeded to Heatherton and while in Hendrik's hut after examining his body the red failed line "Defeat the baron's men" appeared in the journal.

To follow up, like Ferc8 said, I can confirm the red cross in the quest journal shows up immediately after you examine Hendrik's body at the hut. This might be just a minor bug but for those including myself who are irritated by the little red cross this is truly annoying. There are also similar bugs from other quests, such as the Magic Lamp quest in which you will always get a red cross next to the objective "Search the room using your witcher sense." There could be more.

Now I fully understand that there are situations with branching and inevitably conflicting choices, and those are the very moments that made this game so great and worth savoring. For example during the whoreson junior's quest if you choose to go in with cleaver's men you will inevitably failed some of the objectives while ultimately achieving the same thing. In situations like these the red cross is a reminder of the choices you made, and this should not be the case for the Nilfgaardian Connection Quest.

Also, this:

I had this problem too. I just started the whole game over because I missed the stupid crystal skull at the beginning of the game. I scrolled through the completed quest log and see defeat the barons men has a failed mark next to it. I never fought the barons men in the inn and offered them drinks. I never got attacked by them anywhere either. My heart sank after seeing the failed quest message in my list. Is this going to be fixed it seems to have been happening for months.
