[BUG] PC Control Rebinding Issue

[BUG] PC Control Rebinding Issue

Hi,

The keys "," and "." do not work for being bound to left and right movement (strafe). They work when rebound to other keys like the left or right arrows on my keyboard, so it seems to be a game bug.

This unfortunately is an absolute deal-breaker for me -- these are normally my left and right strafe keys in all FPS games I've played on the PC for the last 20 years... I literally have been using this combination (M is my forward key, "< or ," my left strafe and "> or ." my right strafe since playing multiplayer doom over my 14.4 modem and thousands of hours in Quake and countless other games on PC. I could get into why this is such a great configuration (ergonomically) but will spare you.

After watching some very positive reviews I was very excited to spend hard earned money on this game and enjoy it on PC, bought it for full price on Steam and was really pleased to see it runs very well, looks gorgeous, seems stable, and looked like a great PC "port" after going through the menus (hate that that's even necessary). Needless to say was very much looking forward to enjoying it and really pushing anything from CD Red onto my group of PC gaming buddies as they seemed to be the exception to the trend of developers really "phoning it in" when it comes to PC port and more or less contributing to the destruction of PC gaming.

Really need to just be able to set my controls -- so simple! So basic! So... enraging that there's a couple keys that can't be rebound ruining the fun?

Hopefully I don't have to refund the game on steam because of this. Thanks for any help in advance!

I use the same strafe/turn keys, along with AltGr for back and right-mouse for forward, and have for the same length of time. 14,400 dial-up, those were the days! I feel your pain in this situation. (although I hadn't noticed your exact issue myself)

I waited for a few patches before even trying to play, because of the (lack of) key rebinding issue in TW3. Eventually I found the only workable option was to use a third party software; ATNSOFT keymanager in my case, because I had it, other people use the free Autohotkey.

I've remapped almost every control in the game using that, with just one or two keys remapped in the game config itself. It's the only way I could get everything working the way I wanted. Plus a couple of macros for the extra buttons on my mouse.

It's a poor solution IMO for something that should be done within the game. Extra software is never a good solution. But it's the only way if you really want to control the layout.

As I started with - I feel your pain. I had to get over my annoyance though and put up with the mess of using a key remapper and macros, because the game is worth it.

Don't give up. Get Autohotkey and spend a while setting it up, then enjoy a great game.

Really appreciate the reply foxy -- I want to like this developer and they seem to try to listen to their customers and continue to improve things with patches...

It's just frustrating and unbelievable how hard it seems for developers to get something so basic right -- set key X to control Y to function properly in modern games that are sick with consoleitis.

I'm guessing the chances of an actual dev seeing this and doing anything about it are roughly the same as my getting hit by lightning?

Yep - you're echoing my own thoughts. I've liked the Witcher games (and the way the company has supported its players) since I found the first, years ago, by accident when searching for something I could play with just a mouse on a laptop. I don't really do much gaming any more, but I can't resist The Witcher series.

I know I've rarely had issues rebinding keys to my liking elsewhere. I really think this is down to spending more time getting things to work well on consoles than on a PC, a trend which I really hope does not continue in any future games here. I understand the need to get console sales in order to make a game profitable these days, but not to the detriment of the basics on a PC.

Anyway...

I've tried out your key rebinding (disabling my KeyManager first) and you are correct*, left/right fails to work if bound to comma and period keys, yet the binding is allowed. So, it looks like a definite bug rather than just a "you can't do that" issue. I know from reading a while back that some of the bindings are hard-coded in the game and that editing some complicated settings files might help, but it was easier to use KeyManager than start messing about like that.

Perhaps if you stand under a lone tree on a hilltop, in a thunderstorm, wearing copper armour and shouting, "All gods are b......." you might get that hit...

Given that it's clearly a bug though, you might have a chance. There is a proper bug reporting system for the game somewhere that lets you raise a ticket with the devs, perhaps try that?

Good luck!

* ETA: Not that I doubted you, just adding to the evidence ;-)
