Bugs & UI/Gameplay Suggestions (inventory, merchants, quests, etc.)

Since June 2015, I've been collecting below some of the most commonly reported (non-graphical) bugs on the forums. I've also added some general suggestions for improvement in the UI/gameplay, but feel free to post more here. Thanks to CD Projekt Red for an amazing RPG, and for their hard work in continuing to improve and polish the game!

BUGS
--All merchants (inkeepers, herbalists, alchemists, blacksmiths, armorers, etc.) that have been "discovered" should have their icons permanently visible on the main map.

--All merchants' inventory (non-unique items/equipment) should regularly "reset" to prevent significant performance lag when accessing the inventories of merchants containing a large number of items previously sold by the player.

--The alchemist just outside Novigrad to the north of Oxenfurt Gate buys and sells all items at face value, and is the only merchant I've found (after 100 hours of playing) who buys crossbow bolts. The buy/sell value "exploit" should be fixed, while all blacksmiths in the game should be able to buy crossbow bolts.

--Some merchants aren't always present/visible during times of the day when they should be; meditating "fixes" this.
(E.g.: the blacksmith in the NE corner of the Novigrad Fish Market, the alchemist just outside Novigrad to the north of Oxenfurt Gate, the shopkeeper in Fyresdal, etc.)

--Some quest items aren't correctly re-categorized as non-quest/sellable items after the related quest is completed.
(E.g.: too many to mention!)

--Some quests aren't added to your quest journal, can't be completed, and/or have buggy quest entries if completed in a certain order.
(E.g.: "The Mystery of the Byways Murders" contract - can't be completed if unlock quest by reaching Byways first; the "Deserter Gold" treasure hunt quest - isn't added to journal if other quest(s) are completed first; "The Price of Honor" quest - can't interact with sunken chest to unlock with corpse's key; most of the witcher gear upgrade quests - quest journal entries and related treasure maps are bugged if unlock quests by finding diagrams first; etc.)

--Some points of interest aren't correctly marked with gray "completed" icons after their related treasure/action is completed; the icons remain white.
(E.g.: the bandit camp and spoils of war locations southwest of Duen Hen, etc.)

--Mutagens and some general skills (e.g. the various School Techniques) must be replaced in the character screen after each game load in order for their stat bonuses to be applied/displayed properly. (fixed as of patch 1.07)

--Buying the Enhanced Moon Dust and Enhanced Northern Wind manuscript pages doesn't actually add the recipes to your alchemy list. (fixed as of patch 1.05)

--Chernobog rune stones don't work as intended; they display upgrades of "0 Attack." (fixed as of patch 1.05)

UI/GAMEPLAY SUGGESTIONS
--Swords should never be "auto-sheathed"; swords should only be sheathed when the player does so manually.

--The option to disable autosaves/checkpoint saves should be added.

--The option to disable the "raindrop/dirty camera lens" visual effect should be added.

--Herbs should be harvested without the need to open a loot window.

--All submenus in the Quests, Alchemy, Crafting, and Bestiary windows should always "remember" their most recent "open" or "closed" state.

--All Quests, including Completed Quests, should be sortable both alphabetically and by chronological order of completion, with the Quests menu always "remembering" the current sort state.

--The window that appears when hovering over each item in a merchant's inventory (except equipment) should also display how many of that item you already own.

--Inventory item sorting should be improved: it should be easy to see how much alcohest is in your inventory at any time; separate stacks of the same item (when more than 100 of that item is owned) should always be auto-sorted next to each other in the inventory grid.

--Mechanics allowing storage of excess items and gold in containers and/or with NPCs should be added. (implemented as of patch 1.08x)

--Books/documents should be marked as "read" or "not read" in all inventory screens. (implemented as of patch 1.08x)

--Containers that are near/attached to light sources should be made easier to loot - i.e. without the "Ignite"/"Extinguish" prompt getting in the way. (implemented as of patch 1.05)

and fixed: sometimes sorting does not work in inventory and very often in trade dialog, always displaying new items after sorting; mutagens mixed with other items; enhanced poison oil for humans(don't khow it's name in en version) does not have proper tag like 'rare' or something, making it last in list.

And even if some of them do get recategorized, if you drop/sell them and then loot/buy them again, they will get put into the quest items tab. Not all of them mind you, but some of them do this.

But it doesn't really matter that much. It's just annoying.

I would love to have additional item slot for food. Even not usable in combat, but going to inventory and eating after combat is pain in the ass :p

One more (ridiculously minor) issue that will prove I'm an obsessive-compulsive nut: the "Scavenger Hunt: Griffin School Diagrams - Part 1" quest should be renamed "Scavenger Hunt: Griffin School Gear Upgrade Diagrams - Part 1" to be consistent with the other witcher gear quest names.

Question for anyone who's familiar with the game .ini file(s) - is it possible/safe to edit the file(s) to disable the automatic autosaves/checkpoint saves, and/or to automatically skip the intro logo animations, and if it is, how could I do that? Can't find anything in the forums.

Thanks! Forgot about the Nexus. This brings the game one step closer to being the best RPG I've ever played on PC... they just need to keep squashing those bugs and polishing the graphics and interface.

---------- Updated at 09:42 PM ----------

So there's plenty of noise about the XP glitch on the forums, but have the devs confirmed which crashes (e.g. the crash when trying to return to Velen or Novigrad, probably caused by a buggy quest) will be fixed in patch 1.05?

---------- Post merged on 04-06-2015 at 05:24 AM ----------

Anything on when the crash fixes will come out? As significant as the XP issue might be, fixing CTDs is hopefully still the top priority.

I would love if we could switch off all the HUD on the game. Maybe have the MAP being dynamic like the Health Bar, with option to have it coming around and fade it out on certain scenarios, like right after checking the map on the option menu...

Also hoping they listen to the feedback from PC players who don't want to be forced into the increasingly larger fonts/window sizes the patches have been adding - these sizes should remain optional.

---------- Updated at 09:22 PM ----------

I know we're still waiting for the full patch 1.05 changelog, and there's a ton of duplicative forum posts and threads asking about when the patch is coming out, but I'd still simply like confirmation from the devs if possible: which crashes will be fixed in 1.05? Again, I (like many others) have run into the CTD when trying to return to either Novigrad or Velen - probably caused by a bugged quest - but considering I've got over 100 hours on that save, I'd really like to know whether my save (and the saves of other players in the same situation) is now "corrupt," requiring me to start a whole new playthrough, or if the problem is fixable and will be solved in 1.05. Thanks!

I've only been playing for about 5 hours, but I see some great ideas here. (I read they're going to fix the whole lighting/extinguishing problem with the next update - that's my biggest complaint so far!)

But I am concerned about all the crashes people are talking about, which I agree would be even worse than the lost experience points. I haven't had any crashes yet myself, but don't want to have a corrupt save either. I hope CD Project can tell us when we can feel safe to play the game (mostly) crash-free.

It's afternoon in Poland... any word on when the crashes will be fixed, and whether save files with the crashes will then be playable again, would be nice.

And thanks Aezo! Interested to see which ones make it into patch 1.05.

I keep looking at forums and no RED people have answered for two days... I think they already started vacation. would be good if they just say what is happening.

Ha, I'm sure they're working hard (lots of stuff should be going into this patch); just would be nice to get news on when the major bugs will be fixed, especially the crashes. We'll see.

---------- Updated at 02:59 PM ----------

Added a request to the OP: "The option to disable the 'raindrop/dirty camera lens' visual effect should be added." I'd also like to see this, and it may not be something modders can fix on their own. It's really distracting!

---------- Updated at 05:03 PM ----------

CDPR: thanks for fixing (in PC patch 1.05) the CTD issue when trying to return to Velen/Novigrad! I also appreciate the quest fixes (e.g. the "Apiarian Phantom" contract), and the fact that you've made some recipes no longer require Ekimarra Hides (e.g. the Hanged Man's Venom series) - so it's now actually possible to craft every potion in one playthrough.

But the "Mystery of the Byways Murders" quest is still bugged for me. My 1.04 save was at the point of finding the Ekimarra, but now in 1.05 when I go down to the basement, he's there... and just chilling out. I can't attack him or interact with him in any way. Anyone else seeing this problem?

Anyway, I'll be posting more about things that have been fixed/still need to be fixed as of 1.05.

---------- Updated at 11:13 PM ----------

Random quest question; not sure if it's a bug: after completing the Lord of Undvik quest, I have the dialog option to give Octo some nails and twine. I have over 100 "quest"-category nails in my inventory from searching debris across the island, but I can't find any "quest" twine. Is this a bug, or has anyone been able to figure out what to do here?
