If I were to buy now, I'd go for 1920x1080 native res, at 120 Hz or 144 Hz, and Gsync. I'd also keep the size to 32 inches max -- that ensures the pixels are small enough that they're hard to see with the naked eye.

I'd recommend avoiding Gsync monitors though. Get Freesync ones, and AMD card with that :) Upcoming discrete Intel GPUs will support Freesync too, while Gsync will forever remain Nvidia's lock-in. I expect Nvidia to be forced to support Freesync eventually by competition (once Intel becomes a serious contender). Not to mention, that Gsync monitors are always overpriced in comparison with Freesync ones.

Ah, and another thing - don't use HDMI, ever. Use DisplayPort.

This is fucking unbelievable. I was supposed to get my PSU on Saturday, payed for morning express shipping and everything. DPD was supposed to arrive by 10 am but suddenly changed the status to "cannot locate address". I called Amazon and complained, but the best they could do was call DPD and have them deliver again on Monday, and also reimburse the express shipping. Today the same shit happened.

I have had them and pretty much every other company in Germany deliver packages at my home, but this time they cannot find my address?!? This is absolute incompetence.

I've had a lot of stress lately with work and personal things and the last thing I need is some idiot screwing up a package delivery.

It's been a week, all I need is a fucking PSU. How hard can it be?

On the other had I've made a few calls in German and I realize I can now speak pretty well, specially under stress :p

Youve had quite the luck of late!

Forgot to mention, when you get the other PSU fixed, keep it as a back up just in case lightning strikes twice. Or mobo fault in future you can use it to rule out PSU.
Ive still got one from 2010 hanging around for that purpose. (it also came in handy earlier this year when i did a temp rebuild of another pc)

See, I always assume stuff like that is going to happen. And I'm very rarely disappointed -- just pleasantly surprised every once in a while. ;)

Yeah I think that's probably a good idea. It might prevent an entire week's worth of headaches in the future.

Yeah normally I don't care (too much!) if they miss a delivery, but coupled with other stressful things going on I wanted to at least solve this one thing easily. But nope. I should have preemptively ordered early last week but I thought that'd be too crazy.

You're right though, it's always better to have no expectations and be surprised rather than disappointed.

My bad luck is simply epic. If I didn't live that way, I'd have gone insane a long time ago. Not saying it didn't happen, but it took longer.

Well, that's something at least.

Shame about the delivery issues! Hopefully things straighten out soon.

You can't catch a break, can you?

Here's a sentence for you to use when on the phone Amazon or some inept delivery company, when you want to inform them of your displeasure and indicate further escalation is imminent in the near future:
WOLLT IHR DEN TOTALEN KRIEG?!
:p

Hey everybody, I have my computer back and now I'm running an NVMe SSD, a SATA SSD and my trusty old WD Black. I tried running several games off of the SATA SSD and damn, things load so much faster the overall experience definitely feels improved. I can see this coming in handy for traditional cRPG's.

Regarding my problem, I finally got my new PSU today (Seasonic Focus Plus Gold, 10 year warranty) and got it installed, in addition to a second 140 mm front fan to my Fractal Design case. I will start the RMA process soon and possibly keep the replacement around.

I didn't mention this but recently while in the US I bought an iKBC TD 108 backlit mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX Red switches and I'm loving it! It's very basic, doesn't have any macro or media keys other than mute/vol down/vol up/calculator, but it does exactly what I wanted. I considered buying something like a Corsair or Logitech but after some reading came across this brand. I totally recommend it. They mostly follow a no-nonsense design and for $70 (mine) you get a keyboard comparable to what big brands would sell for $120+. In Germany, Cherry Boards are excellent choices but I wanted blue backlighting and US English layout, so yeah.

My next computer upgrade will probably be a new GPU and monitor. But in the meantime, what's your experience with those ekwb NVMe heatsinks you mentioned? My NVMe reaches around 49 celcius (max) under heavy load (benchmark). Is that something to worry about?

Glad it worked out for you @volsung! That was some unpleasant experience.

That ekwb heatsink seems useful, but I didn't benchmark temperatures without it. My hardware sensors show two values. I check it like this (for my 1TB Evo 970):

Code:
nvme smart-log /dev/nvme0n1
On idle it's: 34°C / 36°C
Under load: 36°C / 46°C

I'm not sure what those values represent, the second one fluctuates more. Even a few degrees lower is good I think. It also depends on your internal setup. If something blows directly on the heatsink, the effect will be more pronounced.

It's usually average temp / highest recorded temp.

I suppose in my case it can be average and current temperature, since second value changes up and down depending on the load.

Vega cards are pretty good. AMD will intoruduce a brand new architecture after Navi though. Something they call super-SIMD.

I'm a week out from being ready for CP2077! I've been doing more and more remote work to support my "need" to buy new hardware which was true, but maybe not to the point of needing a Ryzen 7 2700x (liquid cooled), 64 GB of 3200 CL14 ram (b-die), 2 TB Samsung m2, and an RTX 2080 (was going to go for the 1080ti, but found a 2080 for around the same price with slightly better benchmarks even with the less mature drivers so figured why not right?) ;)

Can NOT wait to get these parts and build this puppy out.
