I wish people would stop saying SLI and crossfire is dead. Its only dead because everyone keeps saying it is. If you know anything about it, you would know that in DX12 the developers just have to take advantage of it. I understand that new adopters might not have the incentive but for the people that already have mGPUs, dont destroy our fun by spreading the false propaganda. Its not dead, it just needs some love and supports from developers

Deader than disco. for pretty good reasons that have nothing to do with people saying "it's dead" like large amount of work for the dev team to support a tiny segment of the market so the returns where always minimal.

It is dead, since modern APIs (Vulkan I mean, not some DX12 lock-in) focus on heterogeneous multi-GPU design, not on "you need to have matching GPUs" one.

It's not so much "dead". It's alive as it ever was.

It's just that it was never huge hit.
  • It's prohibitively expensive for many people.
  • It's technically involved, especially for people that don't even feel comfortable opening their case. This turns off many users even if they do want to install it. (If they want someone else to, go right back up to point above.)
  • The rest of the hardware may not support it well. It not only generates heat, it pulls power in problematic ways sometimes. I've seen a few systems having trouble because the PSU could not handle both GPUs under load.
  • It's buggy. There are a large number of programs that will not cooperate with it or will require some heavy tweaking to get it working properly.
  • Developers rarely build titles to take advantage of it. Same with other software, drivers and APIs and such (like you identify above.)
  • It's often not much of a performance gain in the end. Back in the early 2000s, when hitting 100+ FPS was waaaaaay out of reach for most systems, using SLI / Crossfire to land a solid 70-80 in big games was amazingly cool. Nowadays, that same level of performance is trumped by single GPUs. Diminishing returns.
It's cool, and I'm sure the tech will remain available because: what point would there be in not continuing it? But it's been nearly 20 years since the tech was first released...and it's still not standardized in any way. Single GPUs are the default solution by an exceptionally wide margin.

I'll still continue telling people they shouldn't opt for SLI for gaming. Nvidia stopped promoting the tech ages ago. It's def going away with the dinosaurs..

Somewhat reliable https://twitter.com/chiakokhua have posted some info about RTX 3xxx config but deleted his tweet.
Here it was:
[removed in compliance to general leak policy] ~Sild
Corresponding with rumors about general performance only slightly upped but RT performance is more than doubled. RTX 3070 looks neat I guess.

Seems strange that there's no info about VRAM capacity.

They are pulling in to Q3? Funny how there is a lot of hardware lining up near CP's relase :) It works out for us!

They don't appear to have a 'GA102' or any downbin from the full fat GA100 which is interesting (unless GA102 omitted here). Will be interesting to see the pricing which is what I'm worried the most about my rebuild since I'm upgrading from a DDR3 platform to DDR4, a lot needs replaced.

Ok, Im not a big expert in these matters, but:

So it looks like Nvidia RTX 3080-line is going to blow doors down, and is going to be absolutely awesome. The launch of 30XX line is inevitable, but stuff has been postponed because Covid-19 canceled events. Theres lot of rumours and leaks which imply that 30XX line is going to be a big improvement and apparently the 7nm tech means it will use less power and also be cheaper to produce the GPUs.

The fact that AMD is more competitive this time around compared to 2080 release, and that Nvidia actually wants people to upgrade their great 20XX cards, means that the prices should be pretty good.

The problem though?
THE 3080 REVEAL AND LAUNCH IS MOVING WAY TOO CLOSE TO CP2077 LAUNCH FOR COMFORT.

Afaik the reveal was supposed to happen at computex 2020, which has been moved from may to september because of Covid-19. Nothing is certain at this point except that fact that RTX 3080-line IS coming at some point. We just dont know exactly when.

I don't know about you, but I want to be able to play CP2077 the instant it becomes available. I've been putting off upgrading my old GTX 980Ti because I expected either a better card or a better price to come along. My financial situation isn't good so I have to think about these things a whole lot. A RTX 3060 card or something would probably be pretty much perfect for me,only does it come out in time? OR do I have to get a 2060-2070 card first? I get the feeling that the prices for these cards would also come down once 3080-line launches. AAAAARGGHHH

You prolly shouldn't. GTX 980 Ti is still alright in traditional rendering. RTX 3060 is probably gonna be the equivalent of RTX 2070S... Except the ray tracing performance. After 2xxx fiasco, Nvidia will double down on RT cores performance, which is what all existing games need right now. CP2077 will too. Even RTX 2080 Ti will not be relevant a year later for it's price.

Intel 10th Gen Comet Lake desktop CPUs revealed: Specs, price, release date and more

Intel is bringing serious power to its new desktop CPUs

Pretty crazy..

This combined with the yet to be released 3080 series from Nvidia (which from what i hear will be a beast) should cover for the next gen performance needs of any upcoming titles.

Yeah. Pretty crazy, they're finally matching the 1 year old AMD Zen 2. Except Intel is now more pricey Zen 2.

Except Zen isn't for gaming. The context of my post, and this thread, is for gaming.

I said Zen 2, not Zen, tho. Zen 2 is for gaming. Intel is for leg heating.

It wasn't Intel's plan to be in this position, all due to their 10nm manufacturing problems, and they're working with what they've got. Theyve had an awesome run.

Given Intel's gaming efficiency at 14nm, AMD has their work seriously cut out for them when Intel gets back on track in 2021-22. If they don't ramp up they'll be left in the dust like were in the past.
AMD did an excellent job but its only shined because it happened to coincide with Intel's biggest manufacturing fault in many, many years.

Regarding 3080ti, unfortunately it looks like it'll be out after CP2077. (If it isn't delayed again)

Which part? I don't see anything particularly impressive on the 10th gen specs released. It's probably safe to say, "Up to X more better FPS here.", and stuff like "Up to 2x better megatasking vs a 3 yr old pc.", can be ignored entirely.

I'm not impressed. Intel still didn't manage to switch to the smaller node process. That's actually an indicator that they have major problems. AMD is hugely ahead of them, as well as TSMC.

It’s definitely cutting it close. Planned to play CP2077 with a 3080ti and 10900k(or 4900x If AMD really improved gaming performance) as I need the horsepower to run a 3440x1440 ultra wide at 100-120fps. Otherwise I’ll just build my new rig and put my 1080ti in it to hold me over until the 30xx series launches

There's not much difference between Intel and AMD in gaming performance anymore.

Ryzen 4000 will probably claim the performance crown.

Fair bet. That would follow the pattern. I would not go for the xx60 line with anything, though. Save pennies and grab either a 3070 or 3080. If you want longevity and lasting power, be sure there's a "ti" attached. I'd imagine the 3000 line to be a very worthy upgrade from a 980. (But...time will tell. It may pull a "Titan".)

I can't help but feel trepidation reading articles like this. The doors are still closed but it looks like we could be looking at quite a quantum leap in terms of performance.

NVIDIA's mid-range GeForce RTX 3060 could beat flagship RTX 2080 Ti

Ampere is going to be nuts, but a GeForce RTX 3060 that beats a $1200 card? Wow.
