Building a gaming PC

+
Any Europeans here noticed sharp increase in PC component prices lately? I guess Euro's exchange rates weakening against USD has really had an impact on prices over here. 4690K now costs roughly as much now as 4790K did last fall and the price of my monitor has risen from 799€ -> 999€ in just a few months. It's the same story with GPUs. DDR3 prices seem to have stayed roughly the same though.

Makes me glad I upgraded my PC last fall and not now.. :coffee:

Yes that's the Euro sinking down: in France CPU prices are going up too. SSDs too. Technology globally. Fortunately not DDR3 but that's because DDR3 prices are already way too high compared to the USA: they have 8GB at $60, it's 80 euros here. For high frequency 16GB the price difference is even worse.

I want to upgrade my PC but don't want to spend more than 500$. So i am looking for a cheap upgrade not a new system.

My current PC specs are

Intel i5 2500
Corsair 8Gb RAM
ATI Sapphire 290 Tri-X
Cooler Master Silent Pro 600 W (i think i should buy a new PSU)
GigaByte MotherBoard.

Aw shit. And here I was looking forward to not over spending. Should have bought earlier and sent over to someone's place or something.

Will it all go back down by September?

Why though? You have the recommended specs for The Witcher 3.

I upgrade my PC in parts. Last year i upgraded my Graphics Card , this year i want to upgrade something else. This way i don't fall back and i don't have to spend something like 1000$ in one go.

I'm a noob, so I apologize for double posting, and thank you volsung for redirecting me here...

So I'm in the market for a new video card. Mainly to run Witcher 3 on the highest settings. I only play at 1080p as that's as high as my monitor will run. I do plan on upgrading to 4K down the line.

My current setup is a single HD7970 Ghz Edition from Gigabyte.

I'm looking at buying two of these tonight, maybe... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202145
They're Sapphire 290x's New Editions. Pretty cheap too.

Even considering getting a single GTX980...

Should I wait for the newer 390x's later this year, go for a single GTX980, or do you think I shouldn't bother upgrading and I'll be fine with my HD7970ghz Edition(This option just for playing Witcher 3 at 1080p)?

My current system specs
I7 3770k
Asus Z77 Sabretooth
Fata1ity 1000 watt PSU
16gb G.Skill (I don't remember the speed but I think I bought these a bit faster so I could OC later.)

Yeah but, I don't really see the point upgrading anything with your current build if all the components are working as they should. Your GPU is great, you have enough RAM and a good CPU.

Wait until there are better components available that are actually worth an upgrade.

have you got an ssd? if not then that would be a good upgrade.

Nope . Yes i think i should buy a SSD , i have read it reduces loading time. Any idea which one ?

Seagate , Western Digital etc ?

Current recommendation seems to be the Samsung 840 EVO or 850 EVO (The 840 potentially has some problems, so only if it's a lot cheaper), It depends on where you are, there seems to be a shortage of gaming-quality ones here at the moment.
http://ssd.userbenchmark.com/ seems to have good data.
And 250GB still seems to be the sweet spot for price per GB.

Knowing what to upgrade. Any help?

Hello I always like to keep my rig as up to date as possible so want to upgrade as much as I can. I have a few £ spare this month so any suggestions on where I could improve would be very appreciated. My current rig is below, Where could I improve my system? not just for Witcher 3 but for top PC shnanigans.

Geoforce Gtx 780 ti
Intel(r) Core i5-25ook @3.30 Sandybridge
32 gig ram
2560 x 1440 rog gysnyc monitor
Windows 8.1

Any help /advice appreciated.

I was looking at this? thoughts? [h=4]Intel Core i5-4690K[/h]http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/gaming-cpu-review-overclock,review-32901-4.html

As a former 840 EVO owner I definitely recommend avoiding them like the plague. 840 Evos are nothing but trouble.

840 Pro & 850 EVO/Pro are great though.

Get a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo (or similar) cooler for $35 and overclock that 2500K. And wait for Skylake-K.

840 Pro & 850 EVO/Pro are great though.

This will obviously be country specific but:
3 weeks ago: Looking EVERYWHERE for an 850, nobody has any, everyone says "just buy the 840, it's good and cheaper"
2 weeks ago: Give in, decide to buy the 840. Nobody has stock.
1 week ago: The 850 is in the shops, at the same price as the 840 was three weeks ago.

I guess the local stores were wanting to clear the stocks before bringing out the 850s.

And what we learn from this is: never buy computer hardware, there's always something better and cheaper around the corner.

1. I have i5 4690k and my idle temps are around 32c without air conditioner but I have Zalman CNPS10x Quiet cooler which is huge so that could be the difference, what cooler you are using ? Thermal paste do adjust itself when heated but it doesn't make a huge difference maybe a degree or two so you might also want to remove your cooler reapply the paste carefully and then reseat the cooler. iGPU is a low powered GPU however adding dedicated GPU will indeed cut off some degrees.

2. ZOTAC is a reputed brand and recently a friend has purchase ZOTAC 970 AMP and he's happy with it. After checking some reviews on Colorful iGAME 970 I say it's also a good card and comes with a large factory overclock. You cannot OC your CPU on H series motherboard but since you have 4690 (non K), your CPU is locked. As far as GPU OC is concerned it's not dependent on motherboard so you're good with it.

3. The only way we get price slash on Maxwell GPUs is when AMD release a worthy product, so far there is nothing from them except rumors and speculations about R9 300 series and that is expected to be released in June so if you want to play TW3 as soon as it's released then you should get a 970 and who knows when price slash will be effective because AMD has to release something really compelling to cut 970's impressive price/performance ratio.

No need for an apology :) those questions are not stupid and beside this thread is meant for all sort of system building questions.

Hey tahirahmed, thanks a lot for the response, and really do appreciate your insight. I ended up buying and installing a Cooler Master Hyper 103 for my CPU, and now the temp is about 30-40 degrees on idle (without AC, and it's 30 low with the AC on), which is a very significant difference as far as I knew. And I ended up buying a MSI GTX 970 Armor Edition. Building this new rig is a very satisfying and completely fun learning process, there are too many "First experiences" in it, but I really don't want to have a new hobby right now, I just hope this one is going to last long enough. As a side story, I also ended up breaking one of my mainboard resistors when I try to remove the pci slot of my Comrade case. The PC runs without problem this far, and I really hope it continues to run well, or else, I have to buy a new mainboard. This rig of mine costs a real lot for me, and I'm about to sacrifice one of my most precious guitars to cover a shard of the expenses. I hope this game is as great as it looks, and steps off from its predecessors, since I'm building this rif specifically to play this game. Once again thanks for your response, tahirahmed, I really appreciate it. :)

Different form factor for i5 2500 and i5 4690K. The LGA 1150 only goes as high as 3770. (Might not be an issue, don't know as I've still got my 2400 and not immediately thinking of more upgrades... but something to check before making an expensive mistake?)

That's LGA1155 actually. 1150 is the current one, for Haswell and the upcoming Broadwell. Nevertheless you're right, his current Mainboard is incompatible with the 4690K.
