Building a gaming PC

+
I ended up going with the Gigabyte GTX 1080 Xtreme Waterforce. It was a bit spendy but it was in stock before the air cooled card so I pulled the trigger. Hopefully will arrive early next week and then I can see how well it overclocks :).

Hey guys, I would like to ask for your opinion.

I recently got my hand on a 1440p monitor, and currently considering for an upgrade in the near future. So here are the options that I have in mind :

1. Upgrade my i5 4690 to an i7 4790 for an additional $150.
2. Upgrade my GTX 970 MSI Tiger to a GTX 1070 (aiming for the Gigabyte G1 or EVGA) for an additional $200 - $250.
3. Upgrade my i5 4690 to an i5 6600 / K, which also means that I have to replace my current motherboard and RAM sticks. With an additional $200 - $250. And the fun of putting the hardwares together as a nice bonus.

So which option do you think is going to be the best when it comes to price to performance on 1440p? I was hoping for above 50s FPS, and 60 is awesome.

With my current setup, I'm getting about 40s FPS which sometimes dropped to low 30s with my OCed GTX 970, and with the stock speed it's about 30s FPS.

Or do you have any other suggestion? Thank you very much in advance...

Upgrading your CPU won't give you very many additional FPS in games since your CPU isn't that old/slow and most games are GPU limited (especially at 1440p resolution). Upgrading the GPU will give you significantly more FPS gains and I'd recommend buying the GTX 1070 before upgrading the CPU if you can only afford one of the two.

Thank you for your response. I forgot to mention that the above FPS is for TW3. And yes, I can only afford for either the cpu or gpu upgrade at the moment. What kind of FPS do you think I could get if I were to upgrade to GTX 1070 paired with my current i5 4690?

If you were to upgrade to the GTX 1070 and keep your current processor you should be able to maintain 60+ FPS in TW3 at 1440p resolution with high game settings (may have to disable hairworks or tweak other settings if you want to use hairworks). The GTX 1070 would be a massive upgrade from the GTX 970.

A comparison benchmark so you can see how the GTX 1070 compares to other GPU's:

1) As you have already an i5, going to i7 with the GTX 970 you wouldn't see any performance gain.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vvd_leZqSyA

2) That would be the best scenario, for getting higher frame-rates on higher resolutions.
3) That would cost much more than 200-250 bucks. 230 for the CPU plus mobo and memory modules.
But you will use the same GTX 970 GPU. So not much a win here.

If you would built a new PC from scratch, then you could very well go with an GTX 1070 plus an i7 processor. That would be a good much.
Never games most obviously will use those extra threads of that CPU,
and as the CPU is the number one limiting factor on faster GPU's like the GTX 1070, that would make more sense.

An i7 would scale better on very fast GPU's as the test shows below.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhaB1dqYv_I
(but it depends mostly on the game engine and not all games have a benefit from more threads.)

Even so, on never builds i would recommend an i7 over a i5, if someone can afford it.
It's a more future proof solution, and well...you don't wanna change your processor more than once on the whole lifetime of your RIG.
But you can "mess up" with a better GPU if the time comes...

However, even an i5 will do the trick just fine, in the most cases.
So, your in only concern should be, of getting a faster GPU!

Okay, then I guess the better option is to get myself a GTX 1070. It's time to save up, and prepare to have just coffee for lunch for the next few months. :D

Thank you once again for your response @freakie1one and @mark5916, appreciate them very very much...

I can personally recommend the MSI Gaming X 1070. Runs very cool and is absolutely silent. If I was opting for a 3 fan setup I'd go for the Gigabyte Xtreme Gaming version. If it's not much more expensive.

You mean obviously the Gigabyte GTX 1070 8GB G1 Gaming
http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=GA-N1070G8&c=CJ

...because the Gigabyte GTX 1070 8GB Xtreme Gaming costs a lot more!

Welp, then forget what I said. The cooler is brilliant but not +$200 level of brilliance..

Actually, what Mark said is a little misleading... he listed two different vendors, one of which has added significant markup to the Gigabyte XG 1070. The Gigabyte XG 1070 has an MSRP of $459.99 if the vendor doesn't add any additional markup ($40 more than the G1 model and same price as the MSI Gaming X which also sells for $459.99), which can be found for that price on sites like Newegg:

Well then, if that's the case I'd go for the XG version. But really. You can't really go wrong with any of those cards.

In other news, Fury X kicking 1070's butt in DOOM with Vulkan:

Shame it only comes with 4GB of RAM. That cards is a beast. Would love to see benchmarks between it and 1080.

Are you sure, that the price is correct?

OK, choosing the same vendor this time, the price looks as follow:

G1: http://www.ncixus.com/products/?usa...pn=GV-N1070G1 GAMING-8GD&manufacture=Gigabyte

Xtreme
:http://www.ncixus.com/products/?usa...9&vpn=GV-N1070XTREME-8GD&manufacture=Gigabyte

Also Amazon doesn't have it at all, as it seems...

------

VERY CONFUSING!

------

As it seems the benefit is not that huge anyway...

6-10 fps (average)
