Can someone explain the Skellige politics to me?

So in the books Eist Tuirseach was king of Cintra, and Calanthe was queen of cintra as well as high queen of skellige, and crach was "earl of the isles"?

I dont get what crach's position is, but apparently Eist couldnt go to sea without his permission.

But then Eist dies and Bran becomes king. So what happens to Crach and Calanthe's power at this point?

Calanthe wasn't queen of Skellige.
Eist was the uncle of Crach and brother of Bran, the King.
Crach is a Jarl.

Yep, the Highest Queen, but not the Queen of Skellige. As Eist is the King of Cintra, but not the King of Skellige.
Skellige people just have a lot of respect for Calanthe.

Alright that makes sense, thank you. So the only difference is that in the games Crach is no longer earl, and is just the jarl of ard skellig.
