Can we all agree that Dice Poker is broken?

I mean mathematically broken. Three times now I've "lost" when two full houses land and mine is the better. CDP, just so you guys all know, the hierarchy in 5 card poker hands is thus: two players have a full house? Winner is decided by which player's 3 of a kind is higher, NOT which player rolls the full house first. I know, to most it's a minor quibble, but I really like playing poker and even though you make peanuts playing it in Tw2 (a squandered opportunity from a design perspective, imo. most people don't ever even bother to play once the quests are completed because you can't bet properly) I still play for RP purposes.

The economy as a whole needs a lot of work, but fixing the broken poker algorithm is easy stuff. Even if you don't care about the rules of the game, it's just a polish issue (that's polish as in Lemon Pledge, not as in Tomasz Gop), so why not?

All I can say from personal experience, is that every time I believed the game was wrong - turned out it was right.

But then I don't play Dice Poker much, since it's my least fav minigame.

But it's NOT a card poker, it's a dice poker. It's different...5,5,1,1,1 vs 3,3,2,2,2. First one wins, because the sum of dices is higher.

I don't gamble. I prefer to kill things and sell their parts for money.

I don't think it's broken, since it's dice poker i think they just want to make it different from cards
Also, 'cause 6 sided-dice can pull out the full house way easier than the cards.

o-o In fact, my Geralt addicted to dice poker LOLz It's just fun in general.

I think it is broken.

Perhaps the dice boards are made of that blue bouncy goo you find in portal two, but every time I go even a little too hard with the dice they go flying off more than likely take out some poor spectator's eye.

Maybe I don't know my own witcher strength. Or maybe the physics engine is retarded. Who knows?

Well, once I had a bug where the "invisible hand" holding the dice jammed outside the box and all I could do was throw the dice on to the table. Other than that haven't noticed any issues with it.

Don't know if it's broken per se, but it's definitely harder since the patches than it was in the vanilla release.

Or maybe I'm way less lucky. Still, seems like they win way more than they did before the patches.

For some reason I really enjoyed dice poker in The Witcher but I don't fully enjoy it in The Witcher 2. Can't say what it is, but maybe you guys are right and something is icky under the hood. I played just enough of it to become the champion but there wasn't much consequence. I thought it was great in TW1 when you get to
snatch a few thousand orens from Foltest at dice poker
.

Also in TW1 I found myself looking to make money because I needed it, and was barely able to buy any equipment. The economy in TW2 is indeed strange; the game seems to run at a pace where, at least to me, money isn't that important and there are so many good suits of armor and weapons that you don't really need to buy (though I loved my Dragon Scale on my first play through). Maybe it's due to the situation we're in, which is very important and time sensitive. In the first game we had to start by finding out who we were supposed to be after.

I have to say, though, that I enjoyed fist fighting a lot more in TW2.

I agree that the AI cheats like crazy! But it isn't broken. I really hate when I have like, 4 of a kind and they have 2 pairs and they roll 4 dice and get 5 of a kind! Cheater!!!!!

I like the new style and all, just need to adjust the POV little higher when throwing dices and everything is good.

Worst part about the new dice game.
They should have just left it alone from the original.
Everything was better, the lighting, the dice, and the rolling.
Also, there is a bit of skill in not chucking your dice off the board.
...which I've done a few times.

I agree. Just change the POV and the game is fine.

Moreover, it does not cheat. Dice poker has its own set of rules and they differ from regular poker.

TOTALLY!! DX

Anyway I like TW2, just one game for the money but in TW1, it was way harder to win. x_x\

I agree, the rest is up to luck. I used to think that the AI cheats but last time I played I won against everyone in Loc Muinne. It never happened before. :D

Agree on the viewing angle.

I didn't really play enough to make a proper statement on whether or not it is broken/cheats. I had a few situations when I thought "You ploughing lucky bastard!" but not frequent enough to suspect cheating or a broken mechanic.
I had those full house situations twice, but Kris' explanation seems good enough to me. Never thought about the possibility of different rules.

What really bugs me though is that you play only one round each game. The less rounds you get to play, the more you have to rely on luck - and that's not what I want out of poker. Best of 3 in TW1 was kind of OK'ish and certainly fun - since I see that it doesn't make any sense to include a full game with a set stack and the game ending once you got the entire stack from your opponent; that's mod-stuff.

By the way: I love the new dice. Even though they're harder to read (better viewing angle would fix that!), they're just beautifully designed and add sooooo much to the game.

I don't think its broken, then again I don't really play it much. I enjoy fistfights and arm wrestling better (like a manly man Geralt!).

My only real gripe on dice poker on TW2 (and why I'm hesitant to play it) is how I have to physically roll the dice (IE move my cursor across the screen) which in the beginning I sometimes rolled them off the board, and of course how the PoV is adjusted tilted horizontal instead of an overhead view.

Yeah, that's happened to me more than a few times. I do much better with the actual dice that came in my CE.

I really enjoy those fist fights as well after I co-ordinated the QTE. I use both hands on the keyboard. I do not loose now. :p

Is it just me geting lucky, or patch 1.3 made dice game less frustrating, less of the save-load exercise? I seem to win much more easily recently, and it is a good thing.
Or am I geting better at the game of dice? Then again, is it even possible to be better with it?
