CD Project "already working on" engine for next-gen consoles

CD Project has revealed that the engine to power its next-generation titles is already in development.

The developer of The Witcher two has previously announced plans to release two "AAA" games by 2015, both of which "are definitely starting for new consoles," managing director Adam Badowski told Eurogamer.

These games will run on a new, more powerful engine, the development of which "we've already started," said Badowski.

A "AAA(+)" is something very huge and... multiplattform which includes PC... as far as I understand this "A" ratings

The RRDs create lots of excitement. Even in the longer source article it's nothing really new. And those new tiny bits which are too general to conclude something but leaves lots of speculation.
"The whole scenario is quite simple: we're going to create almost exactly the same kind of team, and our policy is to create RPG games for mature audiences. But of course the second title will be different than the first one. We need to change universe and gameplay mechanics, but the game will be based on a deep scenario as [are] The Witcher games."

Yep... oh, well. At least I am getting older and gaming's allure is fast fading away :)

They said that they will still focus on the most powerful platform (PC).

But of course they have to sell it on consoles, revenue from PC alone can only give them back production costs (on TW1 they earned what they spent on it and "few extra bucks"). CDPR had to cancel a lot of stuff after TW1 because they didn't have enough money and they even lost control over their own company for a short period of time.

If we wanna see more games from them, more innovations etc. they have to sell it on consoles.

Or just make cheaper games.

Then how the hell did they manage to produce TW2?

I would like to think they could just focus on PC as it is the most progressive platform. Consoles are a necessary evil I suppose.

Mm-m.

I suppose multiplatform is the future. Single platform development just isn't viable for high budget games anymore. I really can't think of any other strictly 3rd party big budget console exclusive than MGS4 on PS3 from this gen.

PC though still has the most high budget 3rd party exclusives.

Yeah, and we will have games that have quality of Drakensang. ;)

That's why they lost control over their company. They had to sell CD-Projekt to Optimus because they ran out of money, later there was conflict between CDP managing directors and Optimus directors about company management and CDP directors left company for a some time. Later they bought enough shares in Optimus to control their company again.

Also they had to take a credit from big Polish media company Agora to finish TW2, so some revenue from TW2 gone to someone else.

Well, if consoles are good for anything it's making money. So I wish them well in the endeavor.

That's the problem really. You can put any kind of shiny shit in a box and if it's well marketed it generally sells great on consoles.

*cough* Dragon Age 2 *cough*

Yeah. Sold like 100k on 360 or something. Maybe enough to cover the costs of the port?

PC was still the version that brought the profit to the devs.

Well, X360 port was total crap according to metacritics, so no wonder it sold poorly. But they sill decided to release Risen 2 on another console platform - PS3 ;).

..which were both outsourced to the same company which did the port of the first game. Sounds great eh?

Risen games are still very much niche. I doubt they'll ever gain much success on consoles. At best they might bring a few bucks to the devs.

Well, it should matter to you because many other devs prefer to appeal to the casual console crowds when making multiplatform games and the result is a lot of crappy "press X to win" games.

CDPR hasn't shown us that they are going to take that road and I hope that they won't. Too many great titles were "consolized" after going multiplatform that it's not even funny.

Nowadays in the game industry a developer studio has to be flexible and release a title on PC and consoles to learn what's going on, what do gamers want and of course to make money to finance more titles.
Though... some weeks ago I read an article where the famous Richard "Lord British" Garriott (creator of 'Ultima Online', space tourist, etc. pp.) said the gaming future doesn't belong to console games but multi players online...

I don't think so. They didn't reveal much in the interviews but they confirmed (more or less) it's a RPG.

Risen was a huge disappointment for me! The rather uninspired story kept on dragging, and when you thought that something was to happen, they cut it so abruptly it left me shocked! The last chapter was dreadful, and the boss encounter is the worst I've ever seen in RPG; it was like a Wii game.. jump on that cube, wait for the mute, uninspiring boss to finish whatever he's doing, than go and punch him quickly.. and repeat that 50 times). All the characters had depth and personality of a lobster..

It's a very flawed, unfinished game, that had me thinking that I've wasted my time playing it. It's a shame, because PB can really craft great virtual worlds that feel organic, and RPG elements in their games are more fleshed than in most of the competition. Gothic 2 is still their best, and most complete game..
