Chance of Large Battles?

Chance of Large Battles?

I remember reading somewhere about large scale battles in the witcher 3, presumably between the armies. (Although I could be very well mistaken)

Marcin recently gave an interview in which he commented about realism

"You will never see Geralt battling huge crowds of people," Momot explains, "because, in reality, a huge crowd of people would rip the best fencer in the world to pieces in a matter of seconds. And we are trying to make a realistic (to a point) game in which you fight odds you could take on in real world."

I'm hoping he simply meant 30 vs 1, or some other number, instead of a large 30 vs 30. It'd be interesting to be caught up in the midst of battle and chaos happening in No man's land. Perhaps similar situation that Yennefer found herself in from the opening.

Siege of vergen was a "little" uninspired and
disappointing

If those great battles looks like this i would prefer not to see them but hear about them from nps, or see just remaining corpses, burned buildings forests and so on.
It is sometimes better to leave some thins for imagination

I would like to see especially epic battle cutsenes and maybe Geralt could take part in one of them.

The lack of large battles was one of my major gripes with Dragon Age: Inquisition. It kind of ruins the sense of scale, and the fact that you're the leader of an army when you're just chipping away at 3~5 baddies at a time to save the world.

It would be nice to see some large scale confrontations in TW3. And I don't need Geralt to lead armies and chop through 30+ guys. Even something like him being caught up in a big battle between the empire and northern kingdoms' armies, and having to fight his way clear in the confusion would add to the authenticity and scale to the major conflict in TW3. My head would literally explode though if we got to see Geralt and all his witcher buds taking on the Wild Hunt all together.

I think you are right. He probably really meant you can't challenge whole village. But I have to say, I don't think Geralt would be part of some battles in other way than to fight to cross battlefield or something like that. And maybe there will be part (just like in W2), where it will be part of story, but I don't think you will have a chance to join the war and I really don't think you will be able to change result of battle/war this way.

I think this will be the same like playing for other character(s) - it won't be player's choice.

I am fan of Triss' speech from Blood of elves, but Geralt still has other interests.

PS: I am not sure if you want just epic battle (cut)scene - I think there is a chance to see that; or to change result of battle - I don't think there will be a chance to do that on battlefield; or if you want just large number of fighting persons.

I'd settle for less cut scenes and more time using the controller on a big battlefield. Hope it happens with one or both characters :)

I think Blacha confirmed in a post somewhere that there were some pretty big battles in the game.

Not sure if Geralt can get involved in them in any sort of way, but it'd be cool. Having to escape or avoid stuff with soldiers everywhere and fire raining down from the skies, with Saskia even.

I hope not. The combat system in The Witcher games isn't really designed for fighting tons of enemies at once like a hack 'n slash game. It designed for fighting a few, difficult opponents with predictable attacks. Sort of like Dark Souls.

If you guys want large-scale medieval battles in an action-RPG play Mount & Blade. It has what you're looking for.

I don't like the idea of actually participating in a large battle for a couple of reasons.

1) It would have to be done in a way similar to Vergen where you fight a few guy's at a time and it didn't feel like a real battle. I agree with @B l a d y here I'd rather leave it to the imagination or see it in a cut-scene than have something that in no way resembles a full scale battle. The siege of Vergen was one of the lows in the game for me as i thought it was building up to something huge and was rather disappointed.
2) It doesn't make sense for Geralt to be participating in a large scale battle as he tends to avoid situations like that .
3) As @Finnway already mentioned, a large scale wouldn't fit with Gearalt's fighting style.
4) Due technical restrictions there won't be that many combatants which would be very jarring. Using skyrim as an example, the scale was completely off. A battle would consist of 20 guy's on each side fighting over a town with a population of about 30 people. I doubt Witcher 3 would be this bad but you get the idea.

If There was to be a battle I would prefer if it was a large skirmish where perhaps the battle lines might be more all over the place (I assume, I know nothing of Medieval warfare) which would give you a chance to only fight a few guy's at a time and the number of guy's fighting would make sense. I don't mind a battle with only a hundred guy's or so as long as i don't make it out to be a major battle. Better yet I would like to see a large battle in the distance or in a cut scene similar to the one in the beginning of DA:O or maybe we could kinda stumble through a battle like in the Trail.

Regardless, the quote that OP posted gives me hope that they know what they're doing in this respect so I doubt we'll be disappointed.

I'd like to see a scene were a line of nilfgaardian cavalry charges towards Geralt. They ride without fear, with purpose, purpose to kill. Geralt waits calmly as the sounds of hooves grows louder, he waits without fear and with purpose, purpose to kill. The nilffgarrdians roar as they raise their swords and halberds ready to strike. Geralt raises his hand and with his fingers forms the sign of AARD. He unleashes a powerful force of air which rockets towards the line of approaching cavalry. Horses neigh, bodies fall, steel flashes and blood rains. Chaos ensues.

I'd prefer not to see Nilfgaardian cavalry armed with halberds. I might be alone here though ...

This reminded me of the books...Geralt once faced charge of Nilfgaardian cavalry ...And what he did? Escape, of course...Just as every smart witcher would do... ;)

To many 'hollywoodish' ideas in this thread :/ (hollywoodish is not 100% accurate but is the most accurate term possible)

Wasn't it mentioned somewhere that when you start off with the game Gors Velen is under siege by Nilfgaard?
Along with the info that Oxenfurt is in the game.
Maybe this is also loosely connected to the main quest. Though I agree that it is very hard to impossible making a believable battle with lots of foes in a game outside of cutscenes.

It is very unwise to put assets as valuable as Geralt in a large battle to get slaughtered in the front lines. Brutes wearing heavy armors would fair better in a large battlefield compared to a Witcher with light armor who relies on speed and maneuver to overcome opponents. Witcher fighting style and armor choices are meant to enable them to take on small groups of people and eliminate them as fast and as efficiently as possible which is the opposite of wearing heavy armors and slugging it out in a large battlefield. Coën was a Witcher who got slaughtered in a large battlefield, and there is a high possibility that Geralt would not fare any better in the same situation. If I was a King and I had a Witcher by my side, then I would use him to infiltrate castles and assassinate targets or sabotage gates or other defenses. The Witcher had to face small groups of guards in the castle, which he would take care of fast and efficiently then he would proceed with his task. This is exactly how Foltest used Geralt and how Emhyr used Letho. Foltest used Geralt to get rid of obsticles like the ballista and archers who blocked his army, and finally he used Geralt to dismantle Arian and his small group of bodyguards. Emhyr used Letho to infiltrate castles and camps and assassinate his targets. So I liked the way Geralt was used in the Witcher 2, but seeing large armies clash in the distance would have added to the experience.

If they're gonna be in the game, I'd like to see 2 kinds of them, ones you're a part of, and ones you're watching from a distance while you're sneaking by in the mountain forests for example. From the said 2, I'd much rather see the ones Geralt is not a part of. Not Geralt's style to get caught up in those, even though he was forced to involve in them in the 2nd one, the devs said the story is gonna be much more personal this time around, so...

I just don't see a realistic battle depiction in gameplay like, ever. It's either a realistic cut-scene or a non-realistic gameplay part. Take a look at that:
The amount of control you have over where you go is minimal, you're in a crowd. Pacing is terrible unless you're one-hitting everything on your way. It's either fun or realistic, I think.

TBH I didn't mind battle of Vergen, I think it leaves enough for my imagination, though still lets me slash Henselt's punks. :)
