Character customization in Witcher 3?

Will we create our characters in the Witcher 3, or will we all be playing as the same, generic character from the clips?

This isn't TES, there is no character creation and you play as a predefined character with his own background and story that is heavily used through the whole game.

Yep. Same generic guy. He's kind of a bore, and most of the community is really annoyed that CDPR insists on using Gerald.

Yeah, I've never played a Witcher game, but was looking into this one. One of my favorite aspects of any game, though, is everything I can do with my character. I guess it's just something that helps me feel immersed in the experience.

Maybe Cyberpunk2077 will be for you then, Witcher is a heavily story driven RPG and not one where you can just replace the main character with any nameless guy because he is completely connected to the world, characters, story, events etc and we've been playing as Geralt for the last two games.
(and he is far from generic, quite the opposite >_>)

I'll look into into, but it sounds kind of futuristic. & I wasn't necessarily talking about a completely custom character, I was just curious as to what all options would be available for any aspect of appearance. If there would be any way at 20 hours in to prevent your character from looking the same as he did 1 hour in, and so on. Apparel options, hair styles, whatever. Also, I wasn't referring to the character's story/background, or personality, by "generic." I was just simply looking for some simple information about one minor aspect of a game. I've never played a Witcher game, but thought it looked like it may be good. I wanted to look into what all would be available in it. Anyway, thanks for the info.

& I don't quite understand the reason for the "This isn't TES" comment. If I had asked if there would be combat using a sword, would that then make it TES? A lot of RPG fans will probably want to play the Witcher 3, some that may have no background with previous "Witcher" titles. Seems logical they may ask questions.

There will be customizable weapons/armor and hairstyles (maybe beards), I think each armor will look different as its upgraded such as an additional shoulderpad or some such, and each individual armor set will look different aswell so theres that. Only thing you can't really change is his face, name or voice, Geralt is Geralt.

It's not supposed to be 'derogatory' comment, just that they're different kinds of games. TES gives you total freedom to do whatever you want(for the most part, within reason) while Witcher doesn't. It limits you to the possibility of Geralt's actions who is a predefined character from the 8 Witcher books, it's completely story driven with choices and consequences being the key roleplaying element.

As for *that* kind of customizations - you have different armours/outfits/hairstyles/beardstyles.

More than customizing his looks (which, as already mentioned, you can to a lesser extent) you'll customize his views on the world through your actions.

Will we create our characters in the Witcher 3, or will we all be playing as the same, generic character from the clips?

Yeah. I don't wanna play as this old fart either.
Whaddaya call him ? Gerald of some sort !?
He seems more fit to hunt cockroaches in retirement home instead of hunting monsters.

How about we don't pile on the person that's new to the seires and doesn't know what to expect? Try to keep the sarcastic remarks to a minimum :)

OT: Other than the visual changes already pointed out, you also have a skill tree (it is an RPG, after all), which lets you further customise your character, allowing the player to focus on achemy, swordplay or magic (or any mix of those). Also, as @HellKnightX88 said, your choices play a big part in shaping the story and the world around you - another thing that greatly contributes to feeling like the way you play Geralt is different than how other people do.

True, true. It's all in good spirit @SwordofJessie , not meant to belittle you :)

The Witcher games are basically glorified fan fiction. They're based on a series of books, and the first game takes place five years after the events of the last, with the protagonist being the same one from the books - Geralt. A fixed character has benefits and disadvantages. You take some measure of freedom from the player, but gain in turn a much deeper and more consistent story. Depth over breadth.

Wild Hunt is a standalone game, according to the devs. They're designing an introduction in the game that should bring new players up to speed about who is who and what is what. If you like, though, we can expand about Geralt, his main companions and the world in ways that Wikipedia won't. Obviously, most of us find the story and setting compelling. I used to cherish freedom above anything else in RPGs, but ever since The Witcher games I realized how limiting yourself to a fully fleshed character opens so other doors, story-wise, that are just worth it. Doors that you can't open with the classic "blank slate" character of RPGs.

Also, Geralt isn't generic...and there will be customizability.

If I would have to describe Geralt to someone that isn't a fan of the series I would never use words like "generic".As a person that usually likes to make his own characters in RPGs I can wholeheartedly say that you will enjoy your time in his shoes probably more than your "n" playthrough in Skyrim as a khajiit sailor. The Witcher is a story driven RPG with a lot o player choice in it so you'll have the opportunity to make yourself shine through Geralts actions and you'll have a blast doing it.Also,as others have already pointed out already, you'll have a lot of customization options at your disposal to make Geralt closer to what you want him to look and feel.

People who claim that Geralt is generic clearly haven't played the games or read the books, or have been skipping cutscenes too often. Also, just because a character's voice is somewhat monotone doesn't mean he is generic lol.

We can cool down our indignation. OP himself clarified:
