Exactly. I don't want to be unsure about my character when I start playing as him/her. My brother restarted Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Star Wars: The Old Republic and others numerous times because of this.

I have to say I'd rather take one (or three, or five) professionally modelled character for each gender with the option to customize the "auxiliaries" than roll the dice on a character editor. So far, not a single one of those could produce consistently good results in a game where it matters (so EVE doesn't count here).

Well designed, characterful visuals > endless options that inevitably produce the victim of a botox poisoning.

This. Few people have the talent to match what CDPR's artists can do, and no game except maybe EVE online has a sophisticated creator. Most result in generic looking blow-up dolls no matter what you do. So I'd leave body customization to the pros, and just let us design face, hair, makeup, tattoos and jewelry.

And on that note I hope CDPR creates a high quality default, as all I may do is alter the hair, makeup etc.

I'm sorry but in an RPG, especially an open world one, I have to be happy with my character or I'll most likely just pass the game over. That's part of why I've never played more than a bit of Deus Ex. Wasn't fond of the character. Well built character creators have spoiled me on that respect. I want the character I'm playing as to look the way I want them to look. I want to be able to pick my hair style and color, my face, my clothes. The more options the better (within the limits of time, programmers, and money of course)

And yes, EVE is mostly space ships. :p Unless they have added more since I've played (which I know they were planning some things) then the only time you see your character is when you dock and only you are in the room so no one else could see it. I think they were planning on making an area to walk around in on the stations though but I don't know if anything has come of it yet.

I expect this too since the source material is a PnP, in their previous games they had a define protagonist because of the source material. So I really hope that they give us as much choice as they can which means something close to Saint Row or more in that line .

300lb, 7 ft tall with johnny bravo hair style, wearing Hawaiian shirt, hockey pants and high heels. yep that's my future Max Tac agent alright.

I joking ofc :D
...but giving player option to freely create your own avatar is always good. people like to look at their own character wearing new armor pieces or weapons etc.

I had a solo that was to look like the lead from the band Static-X especially the hair though my solo around 4 feet and his hair was a constant shifting neon turquoise color with a rather heavy western drawl. So CDPR should take the APB, Eve Online and Saints Row 2 CCs, blend em up, puree them, purify them and mold a CC that would do Cyberpunk 2020 justice. And it probably won't be enough for me. heh

I really dont like it when you get generic armor, armor+1 through+5 and the stuff all looks exactly the same. I understand it, but something about it irks me.

I am all about the customization. I think while EVE and APB look great, they are lacking in different areas. Basically, if I can't create my avatar I do not think the CC was as good as it can be :p I really just like to see a really dynamic range of options and variances when tweaking the parts of your character's face and body. For example, if I want give my character a square jaw, or more of a narrow V shape. Being able to give my character a bump on the bridge of his nose and being able to tweak how big it is, where it actually sits on his nose, etc. I like getting into that detail, and neither of those games really gave me that depth that I was looking for. For example, the biggie is facial hair and hair styles. They are usually really limited and I hardly ever find what I am looking for and have to settle for something else completely.

So if there is going to a CC for CP then please let it be dynamic in terms variety and being able to tweak all the different parts of a character's face, and provide a mass amount of different hair styles, facial hair styles, hair colors, etc.

APB. Or better works for me. In fact, CC can be a game in of itself, IMO. I spend hours creating and recreating RPG characters and usually am disappointed because of the limitations. I'm going to check out APB, just because the vid someone posted in this thread. Regardless of what the game is about, that strong of a CC tool makes my mouth water.

APB (Reloaded) may not be what you expect. It's a now free-to-play game about an endless war between criminals and enforcers in the city of San Paro.

The original one is so much better, though. Wish it went back to that.

A solid character creator can indeed be a great asset to a game. Champions Online, for example, has a positively MASSIVE character-creation system, such that much of their playerbase is on the free-to-play version, yet they still make good money off them just by selling microtransation-purchased "costume packs" that do nothing but add features and parts to the character-design system.

It'd be awesome if they had like, 'classic' customisation options alongside original designs. Like Rob Batty's hair, Neo's coat, Kaneda's leathers etc. things like that

Great Ideas!

First of all wanted to say, great thread, I think your ideas are awesome and you explain them very clearly. The devs should certainly implement these ideas. I would love to see an in-depth character creation where you can change the cosmetics of your character like: Gender, race, body type, face customization, tattoos, scars, layered clothing and like you said make a truly unique character.

I also agree with your second point, to have your character ''blend in'' with the area it's in by the means of different customization options for that particular area would be a very welcome addition to the game.

The role and skill system you mentioned sounds great as well. I would love to see the exact same mission unfold in completely different ways based on the role you choose. Starting at the precinct and getting called to a drug deal, busting in and arresting or using deadly force to take the criminals down sounds great to me.
Being able to play as a cop interests me as I am studying Criminology and police work is the way I want to go after I finish University. By the time this game comes out I might even have a job at the Dutch Police Department already, who knows.

But, back on-topic. Knowing the background of your character and perhaps even choosing your background would certainly add much more depth to the overall story and it would be interesting to see how NPC's react to you based on your background. For example coming from a notorious criminal family and being involved in criminal activities would mean that good-natured people would see you as a bad person, while criminals would say you might be a valuable asset in their criminal activities.
Well, I'm sure Cyberpunk 2077 will turn out to be a great game. I certainly hope so.

All I can hope for is that if we get augments, then they'll show. If I replace my eyeball, I want the thing to glow in the dark or potentially have chunks of metal sticking out of it. 'Cause so far I've yet to see a game that gives me that option, visually.

Thanks man. and yeah, a optional lifepath background would be awesome... even if it doesn't have any effect on the game, but if it does, even better.

Honestly, I'd be happy if it just includes gender selection and the ability to change my hairstyle. Things like face customisation with sliders would be awesome though, as would things like scars and tattoos. Given the setting, visible cybernetics would be sweet. Maybe they could tie that into what class or abilities your character actually has. Like if you have a see in the dark ability you have the option of your character having one or both of their eyes look more robotic.

I'd also like it if clothing was part of the character customisation and wasn't tied to stats. That way you could choose a really cool outfit for your character and make them feel unique without having to worry that you're somehow nerfing yourself by not running around with optimal gear stat wise.

This is going to be hugely important for most of the fans since your character's style was such a huge part of the PnP.

Affectations anyone?
