I’m on a steam deck. FYI
I have searched high and low for this specific problem with no success. I’ve posted in two Reddit groups and still no answers.
I have been trying for ages (months at this point) to fix the issue and nothing works.
Every time I enter combat with the crones on Bald mountain it will freeze. Basically the game keeps doing its thing but my character is frozen. I can spin the camera but no buttons work. It seems like explosion type animations is what is causing it. I’ve had ONE single time I was able to enter combat (3-4s) before it froze and the crones breaking into red mist/crows seems like the trigger to the freeze. Crones literally stand there staring at Ciri, then turn around and go have lunch in the corner. Music is playing, game is literally still going except I cannot continue. Pushing any buttons prompt a response “you cannot do that now” or something along those lines.
I end up having to hit the steam button and force quit the game or force my deck to shut down because I can’t even use the steam button. Reloading older files doesn’t work. Uninstalling and reinstalling doesn’t work. Proton GE, Hotfix, experimental or any other Proton do not work. Locking into 30FPS does not work. Switching to DX11 from 12 doesn’t work. Lowering the settings to med and then low doesn’t work. I even factory reset my steam deck and nothing has helped. I went in with a new game because this happened with my first playfile. Again, got to that battle and it happened again. I have sunk 350hrs into this game now and still cannot finish the actual main storyline. The files have been verified and all are fine. After suggestions to addfact to the game to force that quest to end and I ended up losing all previous saves from that playthrough and my first playthrough leaving only the glitched quest available. So now Ive gone back in and deleted all game files off my deck, reinstalled after uninstalling and starting a new game file. I’m back to square one for a third time. If this happens again. I’m selling my deck and calling it quits on anything from CDPR. I shouldn’t be prevented from completing a game I paid money for. It’s akin to buying pants with only one leg.
I’m at a loss. I just want to finish the game. But I can’t. I cannot progress because I’m stuck on the same battle every single time I try to play.
Is there any advice on how to fix this that isn’t already out there. I’ve seen a lot of people with freezing issues at menus, or in combat from using signs. That’s not my issue. Literally the second the cutscene is over it’s frozen. I’ve seen NO posts that have this same issue which has led me to no real answers or solutions. The closest I’ve seen was ps4/5 players having a similar issue and buying a new controller fixed it. That is not an option since the controller is part of the system I’m using. I can’t just go replace it.
