Combat in The Witcher 3

+
If you see carefully it's still there. The wolves eyes in the dark had the same annoying effect for some reason.

There is the same problem as in TW2, strike animations are too long. When witcher attacks he spins and gets a counter hit in his back, we can see it 5.20, 5.30.

Watched the IGN interview and assorted segment of gameplay. For those interested https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iAnxuTTdBw (bad audio)

The quests seem to continue on the same vein (favor for a favor), which can get boring really fast, so I hope the narrative is up to it. If the player fails to engage with the main quest, he'll get bored of it due to lack of investment. Also Jhonny looks and acts like a hackneyed version of Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones TV show).

Better look at the combat here - I seriously hope they'll put in some thrust animations because the combat style is not balanced at all with only pirouettes. Drowners seem to use nekker audio files from the Witcher 2 now, which is weird, as they had 2 distinct tells. I realize they're attempting to maintain mobility here, but runcycles should change with terrain to a greater extent, and DEFINITELY with angle of terrain eg greater restrictions on mobility when in watery areas such as swamps, and when ascending inclines, denoted by different runcycles. Also, that zoom-in effect with the crossbow is beyond stupid. It isn't even tied to the stamina bar, which means that it is basically infinite.

Also, a minor quip would be its positioning on Geralt's back - couldn't he just carry it like he carried secondary weapons (torch, axe etc) in the Witcher 1 - at his side? That would be much better than that draw animation that plays every time the player uses the crossbow.

Overall, okay. Jhonny was nice, very openly calling in all his favors to the old woman, and the tapestry room was visually effective. Will wait for more.

I remember devs saying that the main dodge move in combat would have been a "pirouette". Did you see it in the trailers? I did not. Wonder why combat designers changed their mind.

I hope CDPR adds a long evasive maneuver like pirouette beside the usual step move. because that's an essential part of a dynamic strategic combat. implementing thrust attacks and different set of attack animations with respect to distance from an enemy would also be nice. (similar to combat overhaul mod for TW2)

If striking animations becomes too fast so that no enemies would be able to hit Geralt during his attacks then the combat would reduce to hack & slash system. the player just have to face an opponent and hit the button. in this way timing your attacks would lose their place.

The combat is looking better than in TW2 but we need to see some more of the moves Geralt can do.

Yeah, Geralt is being hit in that video because he and the monster are both attacking at the same time, not because he's stuck in a 3-4 frame animation, which was the complaint about Witcher 2.

What I'd like to see is a video on the hardest difficulty, without modded enemies, and a decent player, to show us a wider arsenal of moves and not force the player to hold back lest he finish it off too quickly.

Seriously disappointed of the combat, it doesn't look nearly as fluid as the first two Gameplay Trailer videos and even The Witcher 2

Yeah, combat and lots of other things looks a lot worse than they were presented in in-game trailers before. But there are still about 7 months left and they said that the latest gameplay video was the dusty E3 build (which makes no sense when it comes to marketing) - so maybe they will improve that.
I personally don't like how the combat looks either, same goes for the meh graphics and ridiculous voice-acting in the first few minutes of the "6min teaser" gameplay demo.. Lets hope they will take care of these..

Are you serious? While the voice acting might not be top-notch (I also find it a bit inconsistent), it's far from ridiculous. And I'd love to have "meh graphics" like TW3's in other open world RPGs.

Yes, if u are impressed by visual side of Witcher 3 - good for you but I don't see anything super mega cool about it. When I first saw the demo I thought "oh it's running on Xbox1 again, so it's nothing bad to see a lot of low-texturing from up close, terrible frame/shuttering etc" - but then devs confirmed that it was actually a pc version and then I realised that I shouldn't expect anything above that. Game looks how it looks. It's just after playing PC versions of Crysis 3, Metro: Last Light or Skyrim with photo realistic mods - I can't look at Witcher 3 as something special and Im talking about games in general, not just open world like Skyrim, Dragon Age etc.
I was also planning to get GTX 780 ti for Witcher 3 but after seeing how it looks I think I'll wait till the price will go down after release of 8xx series.

Dragon's Dogma, but that one's mostly for the spellcasting. Monster Hunter. Chivalry. Mount and Blade is functional. There's the new Kingdom game (forgot the name) that demonstrates realistic combat (needs a lot of fine-tuning, but at least it has the general idea.)

I actually like the TES series combat system. And so far the best fighting system is in Arkham series (non-rpg ofc)

Gonna disagree with you there - can go into depth if you want. The only way TES combat is okay is if you're playing an archer. Needs lots of modded spells to make magic interesting, and swordfighting is beyond boring, even with things like dodges, custom power attacks modded in.

TES is awful and Bam Ham is press counter to win, the game plays itself.

So far Witcher 3 looks better than both even Witcher 2 was better than both. Play some actual good combat games like DMC4
