And that's exactly where we're hoping it stops. The fluidity of those games is amazing, but you really wouldn't want that same Combat system in The Witcher. So if they can find their own unique style for Combat, but aiming for that same level of fluidity with Swords & Signs, it will be wonderful.
If you've seen the 'Shadow of Mordor' Trailer THAT is what the Arkham Combat looks like with a Sword + QTE's & it (In my opinion of course) looks absolutely terrible. Arkham Combat works because it is a 'beat-em-up', the punching flows so well with that kind of system, but Swords & Magic? It just looks silly.

However I do feel like we're repeating points here from the previous thread. No we really haven't found out much more about the Combat & we probably won't until we see some kind of Gameplay Footage, which everyone is kind of hoping is coming sometime in the next few months, but perhaps even E3 at the latest if they want to tease us real bad. Combat in games can be pretty hard to explain & imagine, you more-so need to see it in action.

I don't like turn-based slow sword fighting. It's dull and boring, the witcher 2 is almost just like that. There's no skill involved at all it just comes down to attacking 1 target that you've locked on to and then rolling away, rinse and repeat, because that's all it allows you to do.

You can't counter an enemy behind you and next to you, or counter 2 or 3 in some kind of awesome combo move. It's the fluidity of the batman arkham city games combat that I love. It's based on reaction speed, and perfect timing, skill and it allows you to fight multiple enemies at the same time that are all around you.

I want to be able to do that with a sword in the witcher 3. Frankly I think it would be absolutely awesome.

It looks awesome because the developers don't trust the player to control the fight. You could easily win big group fights even if the screen was completely dark except for the reaction/counterattack icons. It's like a separate minigame, and the fight is like a movie that tries to represent how well the minigame is going. It reminds me a little of The Typing of the Dead, an extreme example that does similar kind of thing but without trying to hide it.

Of course every game has the same problem to some extent because after all it's impossible to have control of everything with just keyboard&mouse or controller, but I think the players should be given as much control as possible, with the least amount of telling players when to press which keys. The players should be responsible for making the combat look awesome, the game just need to give the tools.

edit: As another example, that's also why I hated the fist fighting in TW2 compared to TW1 even though it was kind of terrible in TW1. Because the game had nothing to do with what happened on the screen. I can't decide when I hit, I can't decide when I block, it just feels so awkward watching the action on the screen while pressing the buttons.

The Batman Arkham Series combat flows very well, if that's what they're doing, I'm fine with it. I just hope it isn't a 'punch punch-counter attack' kind of combat, I want some strategy, or maybe alot of it :p

AC / Batman combat style will ruin the game down. Let it be something different, not a copy of some other game.

Sometimes a good working but copied system is better then a poor working self-invented one...

After reading your post, I watched the gameplay video and I see, what you mean. But what upsets me way more with this game, that it got the LotR licence, although it clearly breaks with the lore so much and could well have been a generic fantasy game.

Arkham combat system fluidity + Dark dark hard mode + RPG profoundness + TW's world = Mother of games is coming, GOTY of the decade, master of the entertainment...

Hopefully this comes true.

The combat in The Witcher 3 will be very intuitive and fluid. 2 days ago I spent some time only on fighting enemies and let me tell you, our designers have come up with great solutions. I won't get into too many details right now (there will be time for that in the future) but players will feel like real master swordsmen this time around:) It's much better than the one from Assassins of Kings. On top of that the fighting animations that Geralt will utilize are fantastic - it's like he's dancing with his swords. Just wait until you see it in motion:)

Haven't read the whole thread. But, remember TW series are RPG's. As such, the combat system needs to rely on CHARACTER skill not PLAYER skill.

Although this may sound great at first sight, I've read almost exactly the same when "Gothic 3" was in development. The devs always said how great it looks and amazing the animations were, BUT it ended up being a stupid button-mashing.

(For those of you who dont know. In Gothic 2 there was a certain "twist" to the melee-attacks, you had to use WASD to actually perform certain swings and with leveling up your swordsmanship you got more and even more effective combos. In Gothic 3 you only had to left-click like you were some sort of moron)

That being said - and because of the fact, that in some interviews about combat, it was mentioned that Geralt responses smooth to all clicks you perform - it leaves me wondering if the combat in TW3 will be more than simple button-mashing. And YES, i do feel like in TW2 it was a very huge step in the WRONG direction, compared to TW1.

So i hope, we wont end up with another "leftclick, till its dead"-game.

Cheers

I guess a hard day at work, dancing with swords, can be pretty exhausting :D

But good to know it's something else than left-clicking all the time. Looking forward to play it myself.

We all know the sole purpose of Marcin's message was to flaunt that he's been playing the game and we can't!
