I typically prefer games without companions, but I do like the idea of using them for a higher purpose than just an added gun. For example, the companions in Planescape (Morte in particular) weren't only there for fighting, but also to introduce and familiarize the player with the "chant."

I remember reading some Cyberpunk 2020 slang that was linked to in another thread, and there was a substantial amount on that list; I can't really think of a better way to introduce a new player to that kind of stuff than to have a companion who uses it.

That being said, I'd rather have no companions than a companion who I care nothing about. If they're replaceable and so devoid of personality that I wouldn't feel the need to reload should they die, then I'd argue that they're not worth whatever time would be required to implement them.

Yeah don't wanna see simple pack-mules / hired guns that have personality of a houseplant. But if they have their own agendas and personalities then I'm all for it.

Thoughts how many companions you should have with you at any given time?
I don't see them pulling of Ghost Recon kind of tactical combat so I'd say one or two at a time. I'f you'd have two then they could have conversations between themselves every now and then which is always nice. And more people to take part in conversations.
Of course I wanna see bigger fights also, but I don't see them as companions if you have some gang with you briefly.

One of the few things SR3 did right were your homies. On missions they really didnt add that muxh, but if you took more than one rhey would have conversations with each other. Often they were hilarious.

Yeah, this. They should be able to interact with you as well as each other. It would add a lot to the game. Much like in Dragon Age Origins, where at your companions would speak to each other, and it was both interesting and not repetitive. And elevator conversations on ME1, it was really hilarious at times.

Hiring companions is GREAT FUN!

Let us beef up our hired help as well with companion upgrades.

Also I think the MP aspects of this game will be on the lines and similar to hired help in the SP.

I would be cool with companions if they had the possibility of romantic interactions or in-depth storylines behind them. They would also need to be unique.

Perhaps I've mentioned this before, but I'd like NPCs or companions to show some level of autonomy. I would like their actions to affect the player and the potential storytelling for the player.

...autonomy, like, they do actions (like checking their weapon or having a smoke) if you're idle, or autonomy, like, "Oi, I'm gonna nip out, pick up a six-pack of Smash," then they come back a half-hour later, with NCPD in hot pursuit?

I was referring to NPCs being able to carry out the "objectives" in their stories and not having to wait around for the player to move stuff along. I realize that puts an undesirable time pressure on the player, so maybe this could be an option for players who want it.

The objective of this kind of gameplay wouldn't be to do stuff quickly before something else happens; I'm not imagining any sort of endgame scenario.

I'm imagining the changes in the missions available for the player and the overall storytelling of the game if NPC actions proceed without hindrance. The game world in such a setting will be dynamic and entropic, and I think that would be fun.

It also doesn't need to be the case that all such changes should negatively affect the player. Some quests in TW3 are going to have a time pressure element, but I don't like that they imply strictly negative consequences for the player or story.

So that's what I meant by autonomous, glad you asked.

Also it has been said, that for NPC or rather companion autonomy that if you give them bad orders of if they don't really like you they should have the ability to refuse or at least suggest a different action.

Also I think that in certain aspects of the story that a time limit or at least scarcity of time (you only have time to complete 2 of the 3 prep items on your list before you have to start) is a valid and powerful story telling device. It keeps you engaged, makes sure that at certain points in the story you don't just fuck off to explore or rob folk at the expense of the 'main story'.

Can I own my companion? That does sound appealing. Not in the sense of them helping me kill shit. No, I want my companion to shop for me, to gather clothing items, cook meals, order pizza, fuel my car, scrub my toilet, grab me a beer from the fridge. If this is what companions are in '77, I'm all for it.

New roles officially announced by CDPR to substitute the Solo, the Nomad, the Fixer and the Netrunner:

- Personal shopper.
- Delivery boy.
- Plumber.
- Beer fetcher.

Anyone can predict what their skills and special skills will be?

I am fairly certain that indentured servitude would remain illegal. Being able to hire servents would be cool though, if we have the resources.

I wouldn't mind the option of having a cyberform pet. Puma isn't a bad idea. Gorilla would be my first choice though.

Well, like i've said before, all companions should have their own lives and wants. If what you are doing does not suit their needs, they should turn on you.

I want a wide range of companion pets...Dog, gorilla, bear, chimpaze, lion, tiger and all that. (Maybe even a dolphin) And i want the ability to upgrade my pets with human cybernatic implants. (Should be limited to arms and legs though) So my pets can fire weapons as well....

I have crazy wishes like that.. Don't mind me...

Pretty sure your cyber-dolphin wouldn't be able to swim as well with cyber arms, instead of flippers. =p
