Completely Unexplained Frame Rate Issues?

Hi guys. Hoping that maybe other users or perhaps even a moderator could help me out here. I just purchased a copy of The Witcher 2; hearing from some friends that it is really great. Before the purchase I double checked to make sure my laptop had met the recommended system requirements, and was pleased to see that I exceeded them. The issue here, is that for some reason; even on medium settings, I experience lag. Here are my system specs:

Acer Aspire 5755G Laptop

Intel Core i7-2670QM CPU @2.20GHz

8gig DDR3 RAM

Windows 64bit

An NVIDIA GeForce GT540M 2Gig Dedicated Vram

So I'm just wondering, what could be the issue here?
Thanks in advance for any help.

The prob is ur graphics card ..... if u want to get better frame rates then play in window mode with aspect ratio 16:9 ... if u still experience lag then start lowering the resolution ..... and make sure ubersampeling is disabled ....

I don't mean to sound rude but... what?

How by any means could that graphics card be considered shoddy or unable to keep up when the recommended settings suggest a graphics card with half the dedicated video ram of mine?

the ram of a graphic card means nothing
obviously if u dont have enough ram u cant improve the settings or even not run the game at all.
the chip of the graphic card is way more important and the 540m is nowhere near a high or even mid range graphic card

i think u should try starting with the lowest settings possible and go up from there and see how ur lagg is.

This game does not depend on dedicated video RAM; it depends on the GPU's pixel-crunching speed. Unfortunately, vendors spec computers by video RAM so they can sell computers with cheap GPUs as if they were as good as the high-end "gaming" computers.

The GT 540M is not totally inadequate for this game, though. It's a 96-shader card, where the minimum-spec nVidia card has 112 shaders. It's capable of playing this game, just not at high resolution or high settings.

You don't say what your screen resolution is, but a minimum or slightly below GPU can't keep up with 1920x1080 at any settings, and will probably manage only medium at reduced resolution.

Also, make sure your graphics driver is up to date. That computer has an Optimus system for determining whether to use the Intel (sucks for games) or nVidia (good enough) GPU. nVidia drivers earlier than version 275 don't always do a good job of switching into nVidia mode for TW2.

Oh. Well then, thanks for the help everyone. It's pretty damn disappointing that what I considered to be a good gaming lap top turns out to be kind of junky; but whatever. Too bad I don't care for desktops or grossly overpriced alienware. = \. Medium settings will do, the game is intriguing enough at this point I'm willing to deal with the sub par visuals.

Make sure that you check the Optimus settings, as Guy recommended. That's the single most important thing to do to improve quality in your case.
