Constant Crash to Desktop when Saving

Hi, I hope you can help me with this one, as currently the game is totally unplayable. My game is on Steam. Whenever I try to save, the game crashes to desktop. It does not crash in other instances, but only when either I save or during an autosave. Ocasionally it allows me to save but at the successive save it crashes. Progress is therefore impossible at this point. The game started well but when I arrived in Chapter 1 in Flotsam it began crashing constantly.

I have re-installed the game and turned off cloud saving. I am also keeping the number of saves to just 1 or 2, however this has not helped at all. I play several other games on Steam with no problems at all. So I think the problem is specifically related to this game. Is there an official fix for this problem? as it is I cannot play the game I paid for. I like the game, the gameplay is solid and the story is great but it is in an unplayable state. I don't know whether others have experienced this same issue and I hope there is a fix for this.

Can anyone help please?

Thanks

Have you ran a game cache integrity check ?
You can if you wish try the GOG backup copy using your Steam key . http://www.gog.com/witcher/backup

Thanks for your reply. I have already run a game cache integrity check but to no avail. Regarding the download from GOG.com, will my savegame work with the GOG version of the game?

Couple other thoughts: Did it start after a certain save? Could that save be corrupted? Can you try an earlier pre-Flotsam save and roll forwards on that?

Does it do this on offline mode? It did this while cloud saving was allowed..are you sure the directory it's saved to is accessible by you as user? Does the game start with Administrator access? Does Steam?

Basically trouble started when I arrived in Chapter 1 Flotsam. Then I followed some of the advice I saw on the Forums such as to re-install the game and to switch off cloud saving, and to keep the number of saves to a minimum of 2. However these did not help. I don't think that the save file is corrupted as it crashes randomly and only when trying to create another save otherwise it does not crash at all. Unfortunately I have only 1 save file now as in desperation I deleted the others as in other threads they were giving the advice to keep the number of saves to the bare minimum. I think the problem is due to cloud saving as these issues started shortly after enabling cloud saves from the game's menu.

I will try to download the GOG version and see how it goes and really hope this works!!

Copy your saves from Steam>userdata>Your Steam ID>20920>remote and paste them in Documents>Witcher 2>gamesaves . After which the GOG version should see them .

If this doesn't work, Knight, you can usually find someone who has saves from different game points and choices and get them to send them to you.

I downloaded the GOG version and installed it. However when I went to run it didn't run and an error box cropped up telling me that the install is probably corrupted. So I uninstalled it to re-install again. Can you please tell me where does GOG put the downloaded file?

I am hitting a snag when installing the GOG version. When it comes towards the end of the installation process, the installer prompts me to install the Microsoft.net Framework 4, however this program is always failing to install and gives me the following error report:

Final Result: Installation failed with error code: (0xC8000222) (Elapsed time: 0 00:08:42).

I have installed and played numerous games on GOG without any problem whatsoever. This game is unplayable on Steam and now I cannot even install it from GOG!!! Can you help me please?

Try it from Microsoft .
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17718
If it fails to install then you might have a problem with the.NET installations on your system . If that`s the case the go to Control Panel>programs and features and highlight the .NET and you should be given an option to repair .
Microsoft also has a repair tool for the .NET installations .

I have finally managed to successfully install the GOG version and it works just fine. It no longer crashes during saving and can now play the game normally. Fortunately the Steam savegame was not corrupted and i'm playing fine with none of the problems I was experiencing. This has really solved my issue. Thanks a lot Tommy for guiding me towards a solution and for your patience and persistence, you were really helpful. Thanks also to Sardukhar for your contribution. At last I can finally enjoy this great game!
