Constant crashing after 2.3 patch

+
After testing with and without mods I've come to the conclusion that 2.3 broke the game. I played the majority of phantom liberty with no problems whatsoever on 2.21 (main, side quests, gigs etc.) With patch 2.3 my game consistently crashes around the 25-30min mark. I play with path tracing and frame gen so i'm assuming it's a problem with those.

specs:

4090
7800x3d
32gb ram

When using mods, the mods will need to be updated to work with the latest version of the game. (Any game.) An update to the game doesn't guarantee that mods will break, but it can and will happen eventually. Depends on the mods and the assets in-game that were changed due to the game update.

If you save a game with mods running, those mods will create reference data in the save state of your saved game files that cannot be removed. Even if you remove the mods themselves, that does not resolve the issue and will very often create additional issues, as the existing reference data no longer points to any assets (which would require the mod data to be there.) Again, this is not guaranteed to occur; it all depends on the changes made by the studio and whether or not that affects the way existing mods were built to work.

In order to see if mods were the issue, you need to begin a new character with no mods installed and test to see if everything is functioning correctly. If you reload a saved game that has been previously modded, there can still be mod-related issues in the save file.

In that case, I would recommend these suggestions from support:

However, in terms of gpu drivers it‘s possible that new gpu drivers can cause performance drops and crashes too, so it’s possible that an older version will run more stable.

You can also reach out to cdpr support using the same link by clicking on „Contact Us“

I figured out the problem, I was overlclocking my gpu with nvidia automatic tuner. turned that off and it's been stable so far

Hi,
since patch 2.3 I also am experiencing constant crashes after not even 30 minutes of playing. I did all the troubleshooting actions I summarize below and nothing resolved the crashes. This is in my view a clear Regression introduced by Patch 2.3 itself and not caused by external sources like drivers, DLSS dlls etc.

System Specs: RTX 4090 (24GB VRAM)
Latest Nvidia Game Ready Driver (initially)
Cyberpunk 2077 Patch 2.3
DLSS set to Quality, DLAA disabled
No mods installed

Troubleshooting Actions Taken:
  1. Clean Reinstall of Cyberpunk 2077
    • Fully removed game files and reinstalled from scratch.
  2. Applied ChampionSK’s Crash Repair Mod
    • Updated DLSS and DirectX DLLs
    • Installed Visual C++ AIO redistributables
    • Refreshed DirectX runtime
  3. Cleared Shader Cache
    • Deleted cached shaders from %LOCALAPPDATA%\CD Projekt Red\Cyberpunk 2077
  4. Disabled Discord Overlay
    • Overlay turned off via Discord settings to prevent rendering conflicts
  5. Disabled NVIDIA Smooth Motion
    • Verified it was off in the NVIDIA App
  6. Confirmed DLSS Override Was Not Active
    • Using only in-game DLSS settings
  7. Verified DLSS DLL Version
    • Confirmed nvngx_dlss.dll is version 310.3.0.0 (latest)

Crash Log Analysis
  1. Crash reports show:
Error reason: Assert
Message: Gpu Crash for unknown reasons!
File: gpuApiDX12Error.cpp(42)

This Indicates a DX12-level GPU fault, not mod-related or driver-specific
  1. Submitted Crash Reports to CDPR Support
    • Provided three separate crash archives via support ticket
  2. Monitored Reliability Monitor & Event Viewer
    • No red flags or error logs captured during crash events
  3. Confirmed Overlay Functionality
    • NVIDIA overlay (Alt+Z) works normally, no ghost processes
  4. Community Monitoring
    • Tracking similar reports from other RTX 4090 users
    • Watching for CDPR hotfix or driver updates
And none of my other installed games have any issue at all....I am playing currently
  1. Silent Hill 2 Remake
  2. Death Stranding
  3. Doom The Dark Ages
  4. Baldur's Gate 3
Conclusion: All major user-side variables have been ruled out. The crash appears to be a regression introduced in Patch 2.3, likely tied to DX12 rendering or memory allocation under ray tracing. Awaiting CDPR’s response or hotfix.

--------------------------------------------------------

Update: I’ve now tested Cyberpunk 2077 Patch 2.3 on GeForce NOW Ultimate, which runs on RTX 4080 SuperPods—and the game runs flawlessly there. No crashes, no GPU hangs, even with ray tracing and DLSS enabled.

This confirms that the issue is not with the game code itself, but rather with how Patch 2.3 interacts with local RTX 4090 setups, likely at the DX12 driver level. My local system still crashes consistently after 20–30 minutes of gameplay, despite a clean reinstall, DirectX refresh, ChampionSK’s fix, and all overlays disabled.

This points to a regression introduced in Patch 2.3 that affects high-end GPUs under specific driver conditions. CDPR, please investigate this further—especially for RTX 4090 users

Is this a PC problem? I play on PlayStation and don’t have any crashes?

The report is for the pc version but the causes might be different for these two reports.

Usually it‘s not a problem but on PC there are simply more variables that can cause games to crash. Like outdated mods, overclocking, GPU drivers, sometimes even windows updates can cause issues for some games…

Plus, there have been hardware issues with the 13th/14th intel generation that caused lots of problems in the past. So yeah, gaming on PC is always a bit less reliable than on consoles which tend to have a rather closed ecosystem.

Update

I did one change to the Nvidia global settings; instead of keeping all overrides disabled, I enforced the Override Model Presets to use the "Latest" models, instead of the application ones. Plus, I installed the new G-Assist agent.

Now I have been playing the patch for about 3 hours without any crash. Before these actions, it was crashing in less than 10 / 15 minutes systematically.

I will see in the upcoming days if the stability is now back to be rock solid as it was before the patch update.

Update
Nope, crashes are still happening although much less frequent, as I've been playing longer than 1 hour before they hit.

I have not had crashing issues, but can confirm that several problems occurred after Update 2.3. I am running a fresh playthrough with no mods, but I've had more issues with this game after 2.3 than at any time before, e.g. audio crackling, massive stuttering and frame freezes. It's really frustrating, because I had very reliable and stable performance for over a year before this "patch" hit us.

My condolences to all the people out there who can't enjoy Night City right now.

I've noticed a lot more crashing since 2.3. I had just finished a play through a couple of months before 2.3 released and had very few crashes. I had completed everything except the NCPD contracts. After updating to 2.3 I loaded my game up to check out the new cars, and complete all of the NCPD contracts. The game would randomly crash for me. Sometimes I could play for several hours without a problem, sometimes it would crash in less than an hour, or even just starting. There was also a large stutter when the game auto saved, which didn't happen prior to 2.3.

I did a fresh install, deleted my settings, and it didn't fix it.

After completing everything on that save, I still had the itch to play, so I stated a new game. There was no more stuttering on auto save and it did seem to crash less frequent, but still way more than before 2.3. As the game has gone on (I'm nearing the end), the crashing has become more frequent and the stutter has returned.

My system specs are:
AMD 9800X3D
64GB RAM
RTX 4800 Super
OS Drive: 1TB NVME
Game drive: 4TB NVME

I can run it on the psycho preset and average 88fps in the benchmark. I use the ultra preset though because get 130fps and it feels smoother.

I've submitted the crash reports when the reporter pops up. I check the crash log and it's always the same:
Code:
Error reason: Unhandled exception
Expression: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xC0000005)
Message: The thread attempted to read inaccessible data at 0x1F2847F.
File: <Unknown>(0)

The hex address is different every time though.

I install the nvidia driver only. I don't install their app or geforce now bloat. I'm not overclocking (don't need to), and I don't use any overlay software like afterburner or discord. I installed the game through Galaxy, but I run it from a shortcut to the game's .exe.

I've noticed a lot more crashing since 2.3. I

As mentioned above, if the issues are happening without any mods it's best to report the issue with the official support website:
(click on "contact us" to send a ticket).

Yesterday I was playing completely normally without any issues, the FPS was between 80 and 90.

Now it's just been updated and the FPS doesn't go above 8.

I've checked the divers and graphics, but nothing :'(.

I was playing on the PS5 Slim, after 4 hours of playing the game I was experiencing large FPS drops until the game finally closed and I got the typical Sony report message to report it.
