copy protection misery

I have recently purchased the Witcher EE version, only to learn afterwards that the game has Tages copy protection. Tages has messed up my system before, so i'm not keen on installing the game. Questions:- the 1.5 version will remove the CD check. That's nice, but that means that when installing the game for the first time the Tages system still gets installed, right? So even after installing the 1.5 patch, Tages will still be messing up my system. Or can i install the game, run the 1.5 patch, and then remove Tages? The box doesn't explain that the game has Tages copy protection (which i think is very misleading). If i would have known beforehand i would not have bought the game, so i'm not thinking too much of the people that brought this game to me. Hopefully playing the game (if i can get it to work) will make me feel better about you.O, and needless to say, any people pirating the game will not have any of these problems. Does that seem fair to you?

wasn't the copy protection mentioned in the EULA that you agreed upon installation?what problems did TAGES cause to you in the past?

You're missing the point. I haven't installed yet, so i haven't seen the eula. Besides, when seeing the eula i will have obviously already opened the package which means i can't return it. Also, i should be able to see it has copy protection when i'm in the shop, so i can leave the game on the shelf right there and then. Saves me the trouble of having to return it.In the recent past Tages has messed up my DVD burning capabilities. I have an older laptop with a CD/DVD combi reader/burner and my particular type is know to be affected by copy protection when used in conjunction whith certain versions of Nero7. Starforce copy protection has the same issues for me.Any chance i can get an answer to my original question?

Sorry to hear you've had trouble with TAGES.This website is run by the developers of the game, and copy protection is usually decided upon by the publishers, so you're talking to people who agree with you but who have no power to change anything. (CD Projekt RED is the developer; Atari is the publisher.) Also, this is UNofficial tech support, done on a volunteer basis by fans of the game. Since the people who answer questions here aren't employed by CDPR, they won't know what the 1.5 patch is like until they see it. If you'd like to register your ire about copy protection in general and TAGES in particular -- which I encourage you to do -- you'll need to go to the official Atari website. They're way less responsive than we are, which is why people usually come here first, but only they have the power to change or eliminate the borked copy protection system.

several users have compained that Nero 7 interferes with game installation and running, disabling and quitting Nero fixed their problems

Contacting Atari about copy protection is pretty useless, i won't even bother.

What does that mean? I'm not running Nero while playing games, obviously. You probably mean uninstalling and/or disabling Nero drivers and CD interfaces. That's not very practical, and no game in the world should force me to uninstall something that i use daily. I understand that blaming Nero for this is the easy way to go but the fact remains that copy protection is something i don't need (and is useless to me in every possible way), and Nero is something i do need. So thanks for the advice sofar but i'm pretty much done with this, the game goes to the second hand resellers.

Think for a minute... Even after installing the 1.5 patch i have had to install the game, which means the Tages junk is already on my system. And i have no faith in the publisher to include a Tages removal system (which is understandable i guess, since other games on the PC may use Tages). Which leaves me with my original question. I guess i'll just have to wait for the 1.5 and download the Tages removal exe, see if that'll work. Thanks so far, this has been an ... interesting experience.O, and it's Tages that interferes with Nero, not the other way around. For obvious reasons.

you did not install patch 1.5 as is not available yet, right?the Tages installer also uninstalls ( and it's available now, it was always available )

yes and no, as Nero and other also interfered with the game installation, which does not depend on TAGES
