Cyberpunk 2077 censored in Japan

+
The Japanese version of Cyberpunk 2077 will be heavily censored, according to gamesradar. Sexual content will be 'revised', including the customization of character's genitals, breasts and buttocks. Nude characters, female or male, will be wearing under garments and will not be removable. Graffiti that also features sexual content will be removed.

This comes to a shock to me, as the Australian version will not be censored, given their history on video games as a whole. What's really weird is that many Japanese games, have a ton of nudity, but some how nudity in Cyberpunk 2077 is not allowed in Japan? Honestly I'm confused by this.

I just hope the Japanese fans have another means of getting the uncensored version of Cyberpunk 2077, when it releases.

Honestly, some country somewhere was going to censor the game. Not everyone is ready for a Cyberpunk future.

But do you think that'll effect PS4 or PS5 users around the globe as well, seeing as its their consoles?

Yep, this kind of stuff is always controversial in Japan. AFAIK, there is already some signature campaign against the censorship of Cyberpunk2077 on social media.

However, I'm quite sure Satoru (JP country manager) did everything he could with Dev team to minimize censoring stuff. That's why some of Japanese gamers accepted the official announcement (here) from CDPR-Japan as to the censorship on Cyberpunk 2077 (even if they are not satisfied with it), I suppose.
On top of that, it was open to the public in advance; we run into some trouble from time to time that some developers don't reveal any info about the censorship before a game released, and that kind of secrecy is sometimes taken as dishonesty to the customers in Japan. Also it's safe to say that Japanese censorship is awkward now and then; for example Dying Light was released at first censoring blood "green" instead of red, can you believe that?
There are a couple of things strictly censored in Japan especially: nudity and mutilation of corpse (the most weird part is buttocks are fine, but nipples are never allowed to see. So they need garments...sigh).

I'm less interested in how it's been reporting overseas about JP censorship, so I'm not sure the way they put it "heavily censored" is whether correct word or not (cos for me it's not heavy, there are other games more heavily censored in Japan), but for the reason above, CDPR's attitude of sincerely facing problems with JP censorship is accepted by some of Japanese. The rest of gamers in Japan? yeah, they are infuriating as usual, they are tired of it suffering a long time from this kind of stuff (they are not mad at CDPR but the rating board in Japan), I guess.

Part of me thinks Japan is doing this bc Western companies are heavily censoring their games/cartoons. The latest one I can think of is DMCV where they didn't allow you to see bum crack. But then there was that scene in TLOU2. I dunno

Also I'm SO glad it's not censored in Australia. I don't know why we have this issue here. It shouldn't be a problem if certain games are for adults.

Australia has been changing a bit in terms of how games get rated (being as an Aussie myself, I can vouch) which I'm glad to see but that doesn't mean all games can get by which I find a bit ridiculous (for the most part).

Maybe, some of those people on the Australia rating board are looking forward to the game? I guess the hype got to them so maybe they are showing more leeway towards Cyberpunk 2077?

Well there has been a few changes to the guidelines but I'm not sure which because some of the guidelines from the previous ones involving sex was a bit sketchy at best. The only time recently when a game was close to being refused classification was We Happy Few since it revolved around a drug and the classification board doesn't like games where they can allow drug usage to gain an advantage for the player. It was later rated after a small while.

I don't know much Australia rating guidelines(not a native) but I guess they improved their wording of the drug usage when they did a few changes.

Hentai games with tentacles are ok but this is a step too far!

It is actually a bit ironic. The Japanese guy who invented the tentacle porn was trying to bypass the Japanese censorship laws and it worked.

I never understood why people think the nude human body is a shameful thing to show. Like seriously it's really stupid tbh. Do people in japan cringe at seen their own nude bodies when they bathe?
Japan doesn't have a problem with nudity, they have a problem with showing genitalia. The modern obscenity laws go back to the 1950's, though. Why they've held on to it for so long is anyone's guess, but probably a cultural thing - they're a bit weird like that.
