FYI I was running into a quit to desktop with the error "EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xC0000005)" at the exact same point across two characters (after the line "What's next" and starting to stand up while talking with Evelyn in The Information). Clearing the cache and changing settings did nothing. Running an i5 6600k so AVX shouldn't be the root cause here.

MY SOLUTION: However, when I re-verified the game on Steam it found several broken files and basically re-downloaded the whole thing. Problem appears to have gone away. Suggest doing this. Also, be sure to update drivers; I had a tree rendering issue that went away after updating Geforce.

Might as well throw my crash into the ring and hope for a fix since I have given up hope for finding one myself, I managed to play for 12 hours on update 1.03 but when it updated to 1.04 it just crashes with this error.
Error Reason: Assert
Expression:
Message: Watchdog timeout! (120 seconds)
File: e:\r6.patch0hotfix2\dev\src\common\engine\src\enginewatchdog.cpp
Line: 198

PC Specs
  • Intel i7-5960x
  • 16gb Corsair Domintor
  • MSI 1080ti
  • Own the game on GOG Galaxy
  • Game is currently installed on a 1tb crucial SSD that isn't c drive.

Fixes I have tried so far.
  • Running as admin both game and client - Makes it so it doesn't even launch for either.
  • Running the game direct
  • Changing windows graphics settings
  • Make sure everything is updated
  • Verifying the game
  • Uninstalling and deleting the entire game folder then downloading it again.
  • Tried the AVX patch
I'm out of ideas at this point besides reinstalling windows and I'm sure as hell not doing that any time soon.

Have you already tried to change hexadecimal in the avx and normal exe?

Here with a fresh install of Win10 Pro build 19042 20H2. Verify/repair finished, started to play - and flatlined after max 5 min. Corpo, I've managed to play for 5 min at a time up til chinese stand out front of V's apt. Can't get past that dialog where you first drive without it crashing. No matter the graphic settings or resolution, same result.

Same error/timing on 1.03 vs 1.04 patch and clean OS install. Own game on GOG Galaxy. Installed on Samsung Evo 850 500GB not C drive. Only things installed are Win updates, latest nvidia driver, GOG, and CP2077. Disappointed to say the least. I'm normally a wait 6 months to a year before picking up new games. Think I'll be back to that mentality for a while.

Error reason: Assert
Expression: <Unknown>
Message: Gpu Crash for unknown reasons! Callstack here is probably irrelevant. Check if Breadcrumbs or Aftermath logged anything useful.
File: e:\r6.patch0hotfix2\dev\src\common\gpuapi\src\dx12\gpuapidx12error.cpp(40)

Error is consistent, always the above^

Prior to clean os, tried exe hex patch, no change. Tried nuking all drivers, no change. Tried underclocking video card - made it 10 min instead of 5 min for one run, then regularly crashing. Running as admin, compatibility in win 7, closing all programs, disabling 2nd monitor, disable full screen optimizations. Pretty much everything, and no difference.

Hardware
Ryzen 2700X (current amd drivers)
32GB Corsair Ballistix
RTX 2070 (current Nvidia drivers)
Asus Prime X470-PRO (current bios)

Yep tried both doing it myself and downloading the one from nexus.
It's a weird crash though like I can have the game running for exactally 2 minutes before it crashes with the same error.

The actual error that is forcing the crash is
Message: Watchdog timeout! (120 seconds)
File: e:\r6.patch0hotfix2\dev\src\common\engine\src\enginewatchdog.cpp(198)
Which is super odd the game seems to be forcing the crash because whatever "watchdog" is causing a timeout.

I hope they fix it soon.... Really it is just gggrrrrrrr.
I went from 50/50 game might run or might not. Then started on main story and BANG.
Now it will crash endlessly and flat line.
I am happy about flat line thou. Better then a full system lock up!

I could play PRIOR to the hotfix.... Since the hotfix I haven't been able to play, when I load a save, I get maybe 30 secs of gameplay then a crash (flatline, unknown GPU error), when I tried to make a new character, after selecting the start (corpo, streetkid etc), it was insta crash, again flatline GPU unknown error.

Did you try updating your BIOS? Worked for me for some reason.

I was initially getting crash at startup every time, however I fixed this by disabling GOG overlay.
The game can be played BUT it inevitably gets random crashes every time, with the log saying it's an unknown GPU crash.

Try lowering the GPU clock. I had to leave mine at -170 and it starts well

Managed to get 2 hours in to the game now and it crashed when I went to sleep in V's bed.
I got the gpuapidx12error.cpp after character creation before but managed to get by the first cutscene by lowering max fps to 10 and after that the game ran fine until this crash.

Thanks for the instructions
Post automatically merged: Dec 13, 2020

Hi All, thanks for the Hex Values and confirm this really solves the issue. I too have an old i7-CPU at least 15 years old and till now I never had issues running any games except CyberPunk. I was getting the same crash which all bros here have reported 1) Corpo-rat sitting on chair, 2) Street kid exiting the bar and now with the Hex trick this issue is solved.

Thanks a ton (y)(y)

I Just downloaded the Hex Editor HxD and opened the cyberpunk exe and found the hex string (554881ECA00000000F2970E8) via search option under hex value tab and just replaced the 55 to C3, saved it and then launched the latest version via GOG galaxy and loaded my manual save just before the crash and vola it worked like a charm :)
Now happily playing for 30min+ and still no crashes.

Hope CD Project dev team take notice of the issue that there are lot of people with old i7's and fixes this issue. But my sincere thanks to the community in helping resolve this problem.

yeah i playing a 2nd day with the avx fix (string values 554881ECA00000000F2970E8 change 55 to c3)
and i realy think that was someone from cd project red who made the temprery "fix"
what i think is this string is responsoble for comunicating with the laucher becouse i dont get any achievments or in game play time etc. so the is somewhere a line of code that uses avx to "give" the launcher the info
its my gues

and yes i made a copy of the orginal exe and the name of the exe with the avx fix is cyberpunk2077.exe and i am starting it thru the gog launcher

All "potential fixes" for :

Error reason: Assert
Expression: <Unknown>
Message: Gpu Crash for unknown reasons! Callstack here is probably irrelevant. Check if Breadcrumbs or Aftermath logged anything useful.
File: e:\r6.patch0hotfix2\dev\src\common\gpuapi\src\dx12\gpuapidx12error.cpp(40)

doesnt work for me (I test all of them since the start of this thread), even updating bios does nothing

i have found a way to solve this problems with game crashing by playing nomad and have the long szene after joining night city, it looks like this should be work at the others paths too they crashed everytime at the same location!

start the game, chooce a path and save it manually. then play along until the game crashed after the long night city video. the game made a auto save.
start the game again und load the manually saved file from the start, now load the last auto save file, who the game crashed, now the game should work and you can play.

the problem seems to be a bug and have nothing to do with your system, because my system is an 10 years old i7 920@ 2,67GHz with 24 GB RAM and an 960 GTX GeForce.

sorry for my bad english and i hope i could help someone to solve this, so far have fun at night city! :)
