Cyberpunk 2077 Table-top

Given that the up-coming Cyberpunk 2077 video game has strong roots in CP 2020 and is based on the table-top mechanics of the original table-top game, do you guys think there's a chance we'll see a table-top CP2077? I'm a casual video-gamer but a hardcore table-top gamer. It'd be pretty amazing to see CP2077 as a print game.

Thoughts?

Well. According to interviews, CDPR is intent on making CP2077 compatible with your 2020 PnP rules. I.e. you can print your character out and play PnP with it. Yes, that is exciting, isn't it?

Mike Pondsmith -may- be at work developing a post-4th Corp War update for 2020.

I'd just like to at last see CP2020 return to print. Not going to lie, I've always gotten the impression that there is a big "Shadowrun vs. Cyberpunk 2020" vibe among gamers, but I love them both very, very much.

Well, I've ordered (another) copy of the MRB from r.talsorian, and dyrewolf received his already, so I'd say it's still in print.

There is a rivalry, of course.Shadowrun is, ( forgive me) cyberpunk-lite. It has cyberpunk elements such as the Street, desperation, cyber and a certain rebellion. But it also has magic. And elves. And, tellingly, a powerful non-corporate control. Several of them.

In trade, it offers a wonderfully rich world, with many great NPCs and a constantly updated world setting. Also cyber zombies.

I too like Shadowrun very much. Sometimes it's more simple fun than Cyberpunk. But Cyberpunk 2020 is unfun precisely because of that element that causes me to love it: verisimilitude.

It's nearly real. It could and may very well happen to all of us. I love that surreal feeling.

Though as I think about it, CP2020 always felt simpler. SR has very details rules and a lot of situation-based applications of and exceptions to those rules, where as CP always felt a bit more... direct. But then again, different strokes for different folks.

CP2020 rules are simpler. They are superior to any other game set I've encountered for modern/realiish gameplay, combining the best aspects of ease of use and coherent, consistent, believeable results.

SR rules were of necessity much more complex, as they dealt with a more complex system since it included magic. But they were clumsy and needed much bandaging by all and sundry, including the developers. Many times. Shadowrun is a great, fun game. It's rules not so much. Some good stuff - I liked staging, for example. But mostly clumsy.

It's always been my experience that the GM makes or breaks the experience. I really never had a good experience with Shadowrun because the gm we had for it was kinda out of his gourd with dumbass. The genre mix of D&D and Cyberpunk was kinda Meh too. It wasn't something I minded playing...I'd just rather play cyberpunk.

Doom, I've had a lot of people with similar experiences with SR. Personally, I've always like the way SR blended fantasy and cyberpunk but recognize that it's not everyone's cup of joe. That being said, you're on point with the GM remark. Shadowrun definitely requires a GM to be more on their toes, simply because the dice pools are so many and so large.

I tend to run 'cop shop' campaigns as it is one of the easier types and gives the players to run into all sorts of wireheads, Pharmapyschos, jerkasses and everything else under the CP sun that makes for hard-boiled film Noir. I even used the Plot of Hard Boiled under a retread plot (i'm not getting paid here) to put them through he paces. I tend to go in for the street atmosphere (the kinda that makes you want to show later) to high-tech Bang and Olafsen styled living areas for corporate.

my players have liked it as I have been able to hit the contrasts and since I tend to hit the film noir highlights pretty well, it seems to work out for them

I hope Mike does take CP2020 to the next level with this release. As all can a test, the wait for V3.0 was quite ... a ... long... while. There were missed delivery dates which made me have too high of an expectation for the game. When it finally came out, I really wasn't that impressed and thought too much was simple copy/pasted together with some additional bits that I didn't like (alt cults in particular). With this fresh start of the video game there should be some new ideas flowing and how to improve the mechanics of the game and not just add a new setting to it.

Not yet, sadly. I heard rumours but they turned out to be a mad fever dream. A really weird, green, dolly dream.

I have to say, I've been a huge fan of CP2020 for many a long year. For me, there really is no v 3.0 yet. I've never been keen on the latest incarnation of one of my favorite games. While, like most, the artwork was a HUGE turn-off, I've also never been a big fan of the Fusion system. CP202's rules were/are neat, clean and dangerous.

The only thing I would hope to see if we get a new version are netrunning rules that are not...well...ass. Those were the one thing about CP2020 I never liked.

Another great way to pave the road to Cyberpunk 2077 would be the final release of the third implement of the Firestorm series, FIRESTORM III: AFTERSHOCK. I know that most of it's material was wrapped in the Cyberpunk 203X edition, but this could be a fantastic way to get some new CP 2020 material and fix some of the "turbulences" of the third edition.

I think it's pretty clear they're trying to undo in 2077 what they did in Firestorm and V3, so going back to those would just hurt the franchise, not help it. The vast majority doesn't appreciate V3, so it's better to stay far away from it.

Well to be fair, you could have a 'picking up the pieces' scenario after the Arasaka - Militech war. I could see a bunch of micro gun manufacturers rise out of the ashes and give the two former Arms titans serious competition as both of thier names probably are not exactly liked at the time.

but that's just me

With the Firestorm book itself, I don't see anything wrong with picking up after that book. Alot of what I understand about 3rd edition was described in 3rd edition, not in Firestorm.

Sure, there was the fic about Rache's destruction of the net, but I don't recall that being described in vast detail, so it could be a good leaping point to introducing new netrunning rules. And as The WanderingJewels stated, it could be a post-war scenario.

But, given the skip, I'd hope we'd at least read about the fallout of the war and what happens in the 50 years since.

Such a good idea. And a real improvement for the PnP.
