Here is my though on an rpg: I want Human modifications for skills. These modifications actually change your physical appearance. If you can throw in a high volume of mods, then every player is sure to be unique. for example, if you have a mod that's for a guy with more health or armor or something, then he physically becomes bigger. Then lets say now lets say he has a mod for something completely different, oh for an example magic, now he is this big buff guy, with a twist so now his appearance is way different form someone else. with robots and stuff i think this could be a cool visual think for the game.
It's almost already the case.
(except there is no magic involved)
And there's no doubt there will be a lot of "Brand" of cybernetics, so you'll can choose what you like the most, just for the style of it
(and hopefully a different artist behind each brand, so each one will look unique).
But beware "High volume" has a sour price.
In Cyberpunk 2020 rpg, when you add a cybernetic implant (
what you seems to call "Human modifications for skills"), your body change.
If you buy cyber-optics, your eyes will look different
(with hopefully, like now, or in "Burning Chrome" novel from William Gibson, there will be good brand, expensives, and crappy brand, like the chinese stuff we buy nowaday, pretty cheap, but subject to bug, crash, freeze, etc... or who would break after a few days of use, could be fun and add some interesting tweaks like "should I buy crappy optics rights now, or wait a lil, risking to be killed to get some better one?")
The same goes If you cut-off your arm and replace it by a cybernetic one, you can add a lot of option on it..
To be a "Big Buff Guy" you can use Grafted Muscles and Muscle and Body Lace, it will enhance your body (+ 4 constitution in the 2020 RPG)
So I don't think you should be worried about diversity in Cyberpunk, there'll be for everyone taste.
That said, it sound all fun and badass... but here come the psychosis c:
Every time you put an implant on your body, it lower your humanity level from a few points, depends on what you implanted in your body
( also lowering, every 10 points, your Empathy level), once your humanity & empathy level are at 0, you turn in a cyberpsycho, you're disgusted by flesh, humans, everything living.
(in the rpg, the game master play your character instead of you, playing it like a real psychopath, raping, stealing, murdering everyone. )
Often, people mislead the cyberpsychosis, thinking it's the "machine" inside, taking control, something like terminator.
It's descibed in the books as something more credible, more nasty.
Once you're implanted, it's like nowadays when you broke one of your bones, you need re-education at hospital, learning how to move your body, your body have to be used to new reflexes after a serious trauma.
It's worse here, because, nowadays they teach your body to use something he knows, here you're supposed to stay at the hospital, checking with a psychiatrist how your body adapt to it's new "extension"
(yes, a rocket launcher in your left arm, and a flamme thrower in your trouser are considered new extensions lol), but most of them just head out of the hospital, doesn't giving a shit about what doctors told them.
"I've got so much money to make outside, i'm not going to stay here for two mounth"
That's how cyberpsychosis starts.
Imagine yourself, waking up a morning, feeling something in your arm, something that move, that you can control, you know how to basicaly use it, since it linked to your neural system, you just feel it's here. You've made yourself a lil pleasure recently, and bought yourself a bunch of cyber-implant, maybe too much, but who cares?
You were too busy to listen to the doctors, so you headed out of the hospital,
"All they want is to milk my credit card anyway..."
But this morning, your cat was so happy to see you, that he jumped on your belly... at least he tried.
Your reflex boosted to the max intercepted the cat and cut it in half with the rippers implanted in your hand, it was so quick you didn't even perceveid it
"Sh...shit! what was that?" is what you would say, after seeing your cat jumping at you and exploding in air just in front of you.
Implants works on automated signals, so if you don't learn how to master them... it's them who masters you.
Then in the street, you feel all those wire inside you, sneaking in your flesh like a thousand hungry worms, all those humans... possible threat.... didn't you see those guys in the news? maybe they're among them...
Then the wires starts to intercept your fear, your boosted reflexes fills your with adrenaline, you start to sweat.
"Fuck, what is happening?"
An homeless guys comes to you "please, some money, to eat, please"
He tries to grab your arm, but your reflexes broked his arm before you could realize he was laying down.
You don't notice, you keep walking.
You got to the office, boring job.
Your boss calls you, start to scream on you. "You're the lazyest asshole i never fired!"
You leave the room, feeling the wire streched, ready to move, your body is overwelmed by thousand of informations that you can't even understand, your life is so shitty, your wife left you, your cat exploded, and now those cyber-crap are driving you crazy.
That's when one of your co-worker, you know, the asshole no-one likes, throw you a paper-ball "Good luck in your next job" as he laugh.
It's too late, the rage makes you abandon all control, and the implants works for you, your hand grab the paperball, the 9mn mounted in your other arm start to shoot that bastard, secretary screams in horror as you beat the security guy to death with a chair, crushing his skull with your cyber-arms.
But you start to like it, feeling this power runing in your wires.
You show everyone who's the boss here, it's you, and nothing else.
Then the psychosquad comes, you got two solution, die like a boss, or got to the psychiatrist.... who'll milk that fucking credit card that your stupid fucking wife milked before him.
FUCK THAT!
That's how the cyberpsychosis is going.
I took an over the top example, but i find i quite fiting how a nobody can become a killing machine.
Mostly in a frustrating and violent world as in cyberpunk.
Your only solution against it is to learn to use it with a professional cyber-psychiatrist.
