That is the way to Skynet... hopefully our future cyberpunk selves saw terminator and paid attention.... not like those fools in the matrix, who now play tron all day.

i think the real question is how smart do you want to make the robots in cyberpunk?

Well, there aren't really humanoid robots, at all, in cyberpunk 2020.

AI exists, but it's a rarity,

You are more likely to come across a consciousness that has been uploaded into the data-stream than you are self aware computers.

This might be one of those things that might need to be updated. I think A.I. will eventually come, or machines that mimic human understanding so much that it might as well be true A.I.

I do think have a brain uploading would be cool. I can see the rich trying to cheat death, or leave an immortal copy of themselves on the net, living in virtual and cyberspace worlds.

I would like to think that by 2077 true A.I. would be common.

Well. Thiiiiiis is a real variable determined by the Ref. Pages 154-155 have the rules for AI. When a system intelligence hits 12 or more, it becomes capable of acting on it's own. Agenda, long-range plans, short-term desires, you name it. There are a variety of known personalities: machinelike and detached, stable and businesslike, friendly and curious. You name it.

"AIs are the dragons and demigods of the Net; heavy duty players whose reasons are often unfathomable to mere humans." to quote the core book.

How common are they? Well, you may presume every major corporation has some kind of AI, of varying power and complexity. Likewise, major military systems. The complexity of these systems and their Datafortresses mean they produce sentient machine intelligences. Who are watched like hawks. So, yeah, that's a few dozen to hundred in the world depending on how the Ref decides such corporate and military bodies treat their super-smart pets.

After that, it's up to you as Ref. Not very common. I -would- say much, much more common than an uploaded consciousness of a human - that shit is crazy rare. Rumours only, whereas you can probably see the glowing Net edifices of AI power in the distant upper reaches of the grid. Just hope you never meet one.

And as for the rumours of what is out there, waaaaaaay out in Wilderspace, past the grid, beyond the boundaries where even the Weasels and Icemen fear to tread? Your guess is as good as mine, but sure as shooting I'm not setting foot out there, choomba.

Lions and Tigers and Bears, oh my! Lions and Tigers and Bears.

Oh, I meant common like in human level intelligence that helps with tasks and stuff. Like I have a virtual assistant in cyberspace/VR I can interact with. I can see machines with basic A.I. I am looking at the show almost human for a general idea of the level of A.I. the general public will interact with. The scary alien A.I. would be working at corporations.

It isn't a big thing, but I do want to see some cool futuristic stuff besides cybernetic gear. Something that reminds you that this is an alternative future.

As do we all. It's a fine line, though, since you can stray too far into teleporter-land pretty easily and lose that "real" feel that Cyberpunk 2020 has.

I don't recall if you've played or read Cyberpunk 2020 yet, Az. If not, check out the RPG sourcebooks and imagery to get an idea of some cool futuristic stuff we will see.

Was just about to suggest the same thing as Sard... Cyberpunk is supposed to look like tomorrow... future tech and vibe, but relatable, plausible..

Related to the skinweave thread: getting shot in the face and shrugging it off - unrealistic but, yes, futuristic.

Getting shot in the face, reeling backwards, a black mark on your "skin" with a ripple/tear effect around it..realistic, plausible and still futuristic.

I would very much have preferred to see that in the video, even from a full borg... but I understand they wer going for a certain sense of drama in the teaser...

I have not played the game, but I have read some of the books. It has been a while though, I have been trying to get my hands on some of the other books out there.

I do agree that no super technology like teleporters, matter/energy converters, time machines, black hole generators..etc, Should not exist. However, everything I mentioned is stuff that either actually exist or is very close to existing. Virtual assistance already exist like siri, google now, cortana, True A.I. is probably pretty close, VR is coming out this or next year with AR following not long behind, driverless cars for mass market are probably less than 10 years away, cloning existed for years, 3d printing is out now to the public, metal 3d printing exists and just needs to go down in price, bioprinting is the new hot topic, DNA sequencing used to take months and cost hundreads of thousand dollars and now they got machines that will be hitting the market soon that can do it in hours and only costs a grand, bendable screens are coming out, drones for military and civilian use is here, artificial grown meat for food is gaining traction,

This is not including stuff we take for granted like huge flat screen (getting flatter all the time) TV, we have cell phones that have everything (communication, internet, camera, music player, translator, virtual assistant, calendar, game player..etc, access to the internet anywhere, etc. We already have a lot of futuristic stuff we take for granted.

I like Ghost in the shell, blade runner, almost human, and other movies/shows/anime like that because it seems grounded in possible scifi reality.

As for robots, I think the anime tv show ghost in the shell had pretty good robots. They were human level intelligent, but were not really smarter than humans. Some acted off and robotic, and some could fool people into thinking they were human, some had some hilarious personalities like the mini tanks.

To be honest, I would be happiest if AI are handled in the same manner as they were in the Sprawl trilogy.

Yep, with Turing Law, etc...
"A basic AI isn't smarter than a dog", well except for a few top-secret one

That and they keep trying to evolve without getting caught and erased. They are devious and patient; the worst kind of dangerous.

Most of all, they are rarer than rocking horse shit.

Honestly, while I don't think AI should play much of a role in the game, I can't help but think back to my Favorite AI, Miguel O'Hara's house system from Spiderman 2099...

We don't know yet. Doubtful, as CDPR has mentioned only a city and wasteland. Although Cyberpunk 2020 does have near earth supplements, as well as a deep space supplement, extra-atmosphere adventures aren't very common in the setting as such stories tend to drift from near-future-gritty towards a more science-fiction-future style.

CDPR also stated that 2077 would be 'low powered', so I'm not expecting to see much of the really high end gear.

That said, they can always make more games and expansions with the licence.

On the AI issue.
Let me give my answer on how close we are to having a functioning AI by asking a question.

To any real-life computer programmer (not someone that uses Excel, the folks that create Excel) reading this forum - How close are we to a functional AI?

My answer - Not very.
