So I got ahold of Mike Jackson, told him he created my favorite image from all the books, and mentioned I had tried coloring it several times, but was never happy with any of my attempts. He said he would love to see a colored version, so I took that as a challenge, and did this:

It's not the best thing ever, but I was happy with it, and I think he got a kick out of it too.

Reminds me of some of those old stylized, hyper-colorful album covers. Good stuff.

Any advice how to make a fantastic art like this?

Buy a Wacom tablet, Photoshop, and get a lot of practice. It's basically painting, but digital.
