Cyberpunk genre seems to be on the cultural uptick

+
It seems like CDPR may have timed their magnum opus rather well as I am seeing an uptick in the whole cyberpunk genre these days. It had somewhat faded from the cultural bleeding edge, albeit never disappeared entirely (to wit the Deux Ex games etc), but with the latest outing of Bladerunner and other cultural offering, I am seeing a definite resurgence of interest...

I'm glad sci-fi is receiving well made pictures and showing how diverse the genre can be. Its not all about Star Trek and Star Wars (if you consider it part of sci-fi) , it shows that there's more under the umbrella that they even have their own catergory like tech noir, cyberpunk, sci-fi horror or sci-fi thriller. It's nice to be getting good sci-fi movies again.

Exactly in this generation all sci fi games are either star wars or star trek based. Game developers are focusing on star track and star wars related games when in reality the experiences became bland ages ago, there is potential to be so much more in the world of sci fi. However it can't come close to the fantasy genre because at the end of the day I think it's about the developers who have a lot of options

Agreed. I think both franchises started out interesting but gradually lost their way even when judged on their own merits (particularly Star Wars, which is now a mesmerising masterclass in dire movie making).

Star Trek & Star Wars were very influential, but they are now well on the way to cultural irrelevance due to having lost the universality of their appeal (for reasons that are worthy of a doctoral thesis referencing cultural entropy & why critical theory leads to dismal art as sure as night follows day :ROFLMAO:).

It might seem a strange thing to say, but although CDPR is a fascinating outfit with people from across the globe, I am glad they are based in Warsaw rather than Los Angeles, as it makes it less likely CP2077 will denature Mike Pondsmith's masterpiece Cyberpunk 2020 (something written in more tolerant (but less accepting) times).

Its coming, theres like 10 Cyberpunk movies planned for next year or so, from what I read. Even Bethesda is building new sci-fi IP, so its one sign. Theres gonna be battle of sci-fi in the future, just mark my words.

Well, I thought Cyberpunk was pretty piss poor until CDPR came onto the scene with 2077. It was because of them that rejuvenated my interest. Deus Ex never really satisfied me, Blade Runner came close but was just a tease, most of the Anime was disappointing also.

To be honest, im sick of the same old cliche cyberpunk, its pretty boring just in general, and seems like really lazy and dumb story telling. We need something fresh and intelligent, and I hope CDPR deliver.

I figure cyberpunk is still an effective tool for poking societal dead mammals, thus the commercial interest and public endearment. Especially in the sense of how we divide our cake within our societies - do we use our access to technology as an equalizer, or do we cite liberty and pile the odds in favour of 'the man'? Do we break down old walls, or do we turtle up and build new ones? Do we accept the challenge of our own influence on the enviroment, or do we choose mass extinction out of spite? You know how this story goes - they were on the table in the 80's too. So why not peek at them through the same pair of shades, through the same diet pill haze?

Eh, either way, I am sure it will be one hell of a ride. The divider between good and bad will be whether they can pull the look off.

I agree in part but see Cyberpunk as a future in which making people unequally rich clearly won out over making people equally poor 😜

It is the 30 year cycle, in the 1950's there was a rise in dystopic sci-fi and critical social deconstruction giving us Fahrenheit 451, Invisible Man, On the Road, Catcher in the Rye, etc.

Those trends in the 1980's manifested as cyberpunk with a heavy focus on the concerns at the time dog-eat-dog capitalism & emergent technology.

Now we are seeing a re-emergence of cyberpunk, but I suspect the focus of it will change again likely to better reflect our more current concerns like personal liberty, identity, and capitalism but I'm thinking it will focus less on the soldier of fortune aspect and more on the systemic aspects like corporate social influence.

I just hope someone will get the Shadowrun license and make a propper AAA game out of it. HBS may be capable but they don't have the means to deliver what the ip deserves.

Yeah their timing is actually really good with this, and if they knock it out of the park again they'll be making a product that expands beyond gaming in its appeal. It's rather serendipitous when you consider they committed to the genre way back in 2011/2012.

Generally, it reflects the public's general feelings about the world. When worries about the environment really started to rise, you saw a lot of natural disaster flicks and world-is-doomed movies show up. Now, a lot of people are pretty much feeling hopeless, feeling that society is beyond their control and they have no power to change it, and even feeling somewhat that science isn't necessarily doing any good in the world... all key elements that make cyberpunk.

Basically, it's a barometer for where the public's mind is at the moment.

So, yes. This game was timed perfectly.
