Cyberpunk - Ghost in the Shell

Wish there was an official cyberpunk forum, but this will have to do.

I have seen a lot of mention of william gibsons books, and blade runner mentioned as inspirations to cyberpunk in interviews. However, one source is missing which I think also fits and that is the anime movie "Ghost in the Shell". If the developers have not seen it, this would need to be corrected asap! Its an amazing anime and as cyberpunk as you can get. Besides the cool tech and fights, it also asks philosophical questions about what it means to be human.

Ghost in the shell is as seminal to the genre as any drug-induced fairytale Phillip K. Dick ever wrote.

I sincerely hope they draw their inspirations from anything but anime, even Ghost in The Shell.

I dont know why you got some dislikes. GitS is amazing movie and also great TV series. I wouldnt mind if guys at CDPR took some inspiration from it. Matrix did.

I think that if CDPR has decided to make a cyberpunk game they know the genre. Meaning they´ve definitely seen some movies, TV series and read many books... Generally speaking, they know what they are doing.

Anyway, I consider GITS as one of the best movies and then TV series. Plus there is no point in trying to explain the greatness of GITS to people who don´t like anime in general.

I don't say anime is bad (while I'm not huge fan of it, it's just too distant culturally for me).

What I hope for is some unique touch on Cyberpunk from CDPR, like the Witcher and it's Slavic roots. Anime inspirations belong more to JRPGs IMO.

To anybody doubting Ghost in The Shell - the series alone is better than anything I have ever seen out of america, including crap like Game of Thrones. Go to the wikipedia article for Ghost in The Shell and see how many awards it has won from the western world for it's portrayal of cyberpunk. CDPR is lucky if they can even capture 1/10 of the realism and complexity of the series.

"Anime inspirations belong in jrpg" my ass - please dont make remarks about things you clearly dont understand. Sorry if this seems aggressive, but it does get on my nerves.

And no one is saying here that Cyberpunk should copy Matrix. Just that GitS is big thing in cyberpunk whether someone likes it or not.

edit - well said Dragon

Ghost In The Shell movie is pure cyberpunk classic and i'm sure most of the guys
from CDProjekt have seen it already. And Mike loves it, so, i think they
are aware of it :>

Also, saying that they should draw their inspirations from anything but anime
is pretty dumb generalisation. Anime is media like any other, and like in
any other media, there are some truly amazing and original titles, very
much worth drawing your inspiration from.

Even though I love GITS and can only agree that it´s undoubtedly pure cyberpunk with a great depiction of the society and all its problems, among others...

On the other hand, cyberpunk is a whole independent genre based on literature work and it is not neccessarily defined only by one movie or a TV series, so I don´t understnad the fear that CDPR would take all too much from GITS, not to mention the anime style of it. Because in my opinion, cyberpunk is much more than only a few adaptations of comic books, no matter how awesome they are...

Well... looking for inspiration in Anime is ok if you're not going to copy elements connected too much with japanes op culture. I'm not an anime fan but i realised that you can find in them many original ideas which can give you a little different point of view which help avoiding straight copying western plot schemes.

I shouldn't need to gregski - you are better than this. You yourself said that you are too culturally distant from it, and that you dont enjoy Anime. Clearly, you are in no position to cast judgement on Ghost in The Shell.

What you are doing is no different than those labeling TW series as nothing more than a "porn" simulator, because they have not taken the time to play it. I have seen you criticize these people/websites time and time again, yet here you are, doing the exact same things to Ghost in The Shell.

All you need to do is have a look around this thread to see how special GiTS is to people within this community. If you dont like Anime, that's fine, but dont talk about where it does and doesn't belong unless you have seen and analyzed the movies/series.

You're also better than being aggressive just because I disagreed with you on a god damn movie.

I watched Ghost in the Shell. Many years ago, so I probably don't remember it exactly. It was good and I enjoyed it, even though I'm not anime fan.

So, I am not casting judgement on Ghost in the Shell. My opinion is anime is not the kind of inspiration I personally want to see in CDPR's cyberpunk game.

I hope CDPR is more open-minded than you are.
