Cowboy Bebop ain't no cyberpunk actually. No matter how good it is and how much we love it. It's most likely a futuristic original series. One of the best I've seen so far, but still... no cyberpunk.

Funny because /r/cyberpunk is all over Cowboy Bebop and the majority of people there consider it cyberpunk :p

I'm not gonna claim that some are close minded here, but I'm getting pretty fuckin' close to that. As if other countries have a monopoly on expression...

Please explain to me why you think Cowboy Bebop isn't cyberpunk, because when I watch Cowboy Bebop I can't think of anything else than cyberpunk. Cowboy Bebop has almost every single element of what is considered Cyberpunk. So really, how can you think Cowboy Bebop is not cyberpunk?

It's too far removed from the present day, and too far removed from the reality that we know. A fine anime, but it isn't Cyberpunk at heart.

Eh, Cowboy Bebop is genre-less, or at the very least so consistently genre-hopping that it defies a single description. It's futuristic, but there doesn't seem to be the necessary degree of corporate influence or technological advancement (or ubiquity of that technology). The tone is often completely different, too; while some episodes have the necessary noir flair to them, others are so strange and humorous *cough mushroom samba cough* that it doesn't really resemble cyberpunk in any way, shape, or form.

Cowboy Bebop's genre = Sexybadassawesomefuturecyberwestern.

Uh?? ??

@Dona
The the "majority" has a weird mis conception of "cyberpunk" genre. :p Probably a bit of searching and browsing might help.

I just meant it as general observation, how one can consider it not cyberpunk at all, while the other thinks it's super cyberpunk-y. As with most -punk genres, it's reaaally best left to the individual to decide for themselves.

Cyberpunk doesn't say anything about the time or era persé. Besides, Cowboy Bebop isn't that far ahead in the future anyway. Humanity is still "locked" in their own solar system, which gets dirtier and more polluted by the minute. The technology in Cowboy Bebop is similar to our modern day technology, with some extra new stuff such as spacecrafts and space stations. But meanwhile, everything on Earth still looks exactly the same, only more crowded and more polluted.

Cowboy Bebop isn't even far removed from reality that we know either. What we see in Cowboy Bebop could very well happen in reality one day. I wouldn't say Cowboy Bebop is an accurate portrayal of our real-life future, but it's not far-fetched either. Cowboy Bebop is no more or less distant from reality than Ghost in The Shell for example is.

People in this thread need to understand that cyberpunk is a very broad genre. There is no specific set of rules of what is or isn't cyberpunk. There are of course elements that the majority considers to be cyberpunk. The more of these elements a movie or series has, the more it deserves the label 'cyberpunk'. Cowboy Bebop has plenty of elements that are considered to belong to the cyberpunk genre.

Edit: Dona seems to have the right idea.

There's ghost reborn in the shell, known as GRITS, being made in the southern states of america.

Phantom in the shell, PITS, oddly enoughs being made by a software company that previously specialised in formula 1 games.

Spirits, poltergeists lurk in the shell, SPLITS, is being brought to us by the people behind dance central.

Twisted wailing in the shell, TWITS, is being made by a group of Eton students.

And finally we have Spectres held in the shell, SHITS, which all in all is looking like a bit of a stinker.

Ooh just thought of another one Maester in the Targaryen shell, MITTS, because winter is coming.

Why would this get down votes? Some people just don't get subtle humor.

In any case, let's all keep discussing what is and what is not cyberpunk and what has elements of cyberpunk and what isn't cyberpunk at heart and what is worthy of being called cyberpunk and why CD Projekt should design a game based on our favorite movie, fashion magazine and drink :p

I'm going out on a limb here to say bloth was being sarcastic, and not trying to exhibit subtle humor.

It's all good to me.

To be fair one of those down votes was from myself, i'm in a rather capricious mood and the dual personalities are duelling in my noggin.

Tell Bob to behave then. Maybe even call him Herbert if he won't stop.
