Finally I have the time to talk about this long time passionate topic of mine. With the confirmed upcoming Cyberpunk Sequel Orion, I wonder what the community still really prefer after playing CP2077 for countless of hours, a totally lone wolf style power fantasy where you don't need any help as it's all about the player character or where the game balanced around team based format, being tactical with a team of selected companion characters or maybe random hired goons or drones. Let me know what do you think/want & maybe provide the reasoning behind it.
Generally, with lone wolf style, the biggest advantage (or disadvantage?) is player can have their most powerful OP build to provide the challenges, regardless of the combat balance. There is no babysitting other characters, nor spreading out player's resources.
Personally I prefer the later AKA tactical party based RPG. For that, now I will provides the pros & cons for tactical party based system based on my personal game experiences, playing such similar games.
>> PROS
+ Deeper companionship aspects. Player will have more time to interact with companion characters. This will have a deepening aspects for characterization, especially for romance scenarios.
+ Deeper strategical approach to enemy challenges. Things will get more balances out as every combat encounter approach a lot more tactical. A feature like tactical commands will help how player can command the team during combat.
+ More interactive relationship with companion characters. Such interaction can happen during combat or non combat situation, even as mundane as walking through the environment or while investigating stuffs during missions.
+ Proper TTRPG adaptation of roles. This is it. I always wanna see an actual RP team during campaign. Every characters will have the roles that fit into their styles, even having a "fixer" type companion as player teammates. Possible scenarios also how a netrunner specialist type can be a defensive supporting role during mission, giving player's team a buffs or hints of items/secrets/traps. It's such simple things but also give massive impacts in role play aspects.
+ Team building aspects. whether player can personally ask companions to join team or simply hire another mercs in Afterlife, it's one of the joy to build your own team to its fullest potentials.
+ potential of companion characters with unique skills & combat options. Player can build companions skills & equipment that benefit their innate specific roles, like netrunner, techie, medtech, rockerboy, media, exec, lawman, fixer, nomad, booster, etc....
>> CONS
+ Items & resources will be spread out. Of course, with more characters to manage, there will be more resources player need.
+ more time of team management. There will be a hefty amount of time where player must manage these companions to have a proper skils & equipment. Altough, some games provides auto level up & auto equip features to fast things up.
+ lose sense of bits of power fantasy. The game balance will certainly focus one a multiple targets combat system instead of player own character.
