Dealing with Lambert

Is it possible to kill off Lambert or avoid recruiting him later in the game? I'm still not finished with act 1, but I heard that eventually

Kaer Morhen is attacked and he is one of the defenders.

For some reason that guy's personality just rubs me the wrong way. He's a bit of a dick. I've intentionally avoided the "Following the Thread" quest line just so I don't have to interact with him.

I think he can die if Keira Metz is killed by Geralt or Radovid, as she isn't there to save him.

Ow cmon, he's such a likable douche. I find it refreshing to have characters who don't just agree with you on everything and actually taunt you if you do something that doesn't go with their way of thinking and their personalities. Makes the world come to life!

Lambert acts like a douche, but he is one of the three people that would stand by Geralt no matter what.
Vesemir, Eskel, and Lambert are Geralt's family, and each would give their life for the others.
