Yeah well....I dont run fraps in the background.....I only use it to see how a game performs.Indeed, I only used it with the Witcher BECAUSE the game was stuttering around all over the place. So you can imagine my surprise when FRAPS showed a solid 60 right through all those horrible stutters and stammers.........It is just like the game engine has been unable to load a handful of frames so just jumps....Ugly Stuff......and a great shame.....I was really beginning to feel that this game was something special until I got into that Vizima level.

It certainly is. Since other people don't have the same problem (at least no stuttering with 60 FPS), it seems to me to be the combination of your hardware.Which should run it.

You may well say that..........but my problem is a very common one with this game...........and my hardware is all quality stuff and fairly high-end..........Since I have no problems with any other games at all.......I think the devs of the Witcher should be looking more into this very common problem with thier game.

One thing I'm aware of with brand new video cards being released is that quite often the drivers for the card aren't yet mature enough and some apps/games may exhibit problems like what you're having. Another very often overlooked update is to get the latest DirectX Runtime update. You can get that here:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&displaylang=enI've had my own set of rants about the game since it was first released but have still played it through completely 3 separate times and am quite eager to get the Enhanced Edition when it becomes available.Do keep in mind that this particular game is the FIRST major release by this team of Developers and they have shown tremendous interest in making the game as bug free as possible for the widest number of players. It's NOT the Devs fault that a game gets released with bugs. It's the PUBLISHERS' fault in 99 44/100% of the cases. For my part, I think these guys and gals deserve Two Thumbs Up for the effort and dedication they've shown to their customer base.

Cheers for that....but I got all the possible updates I can possibly have in a possible world.I agree with you in the respect that under all the bugs and poor performance per hardware horse power, there is an absolute gem of an RPG. I only got to Vizima/Swamp in the game before I felt compelled to uninstall it (I am the fussy type, I cannot get past any kind of glitches) and was already immersed in the ideas and themes being introduced into the storyline. Some borrowed directly from old world theology and religion, some highly allegorical of current and historical political machinations. A real grown ups fantasy based RPG.....Cracking Stuff! But it dont bloody work on my £1500 of PC equipment!

HiForum newbie here :)I just got Witcher yesterday (enjoying it so far! I can't believe how far the devs have taken the NWN1 engine! it's amazing!).Last week I bought the ATI 4870 for my PC.My CPU is Intel Core2Duo just over 2Ghz and I have 2GB Ram.I have had no problems playing the game. In fact, I have had to tone down mouse sensitivity as that was going way too fast.I have catalyst 8.7 (I heard 8.8 actually degrades performance on the new card, so I downloaded 8.7 instead).

MATTHECAT,What resolution were you trying to play this on? The truth is, this game DOES require some pretty hefty specs to get an "acceptable" performance/quality balance, more than most of us are used to. I concluded that I could just tone down some things and live with it. Some people, like yourself, come to the equally valid conclusion that the devs have specced this too high compared to the rest of the games out there, and give up. I'm hoping it will get tweaked a bit for the EE

I game at 1650 *1080.But this is fine. Like I have said many many times before. I get a solid 60FPS most of the time except when an area is loading. The little stammers that occur when an area is loading I can handle. but the constant stutter I cannot handle. Especially when my hardware is cleary doing its very best. See what I am saying? There is nothing I need to turn down, its just that comething in the games engine is bugged and just installing the game caused similar problems in all my other games. (problems in other games which are now gone due to me re-installing all drivers). In 2 hours time or so, The Witcher will no longer be a concern of mine as I am taking it back to the shop.

Well to be quite honest, 1650 x 1080 is really high. I can't tell the difference from anything higher than 1280 x 1024. I don't think the game has anything better to offer, graphics wise. Like the other guy said about the driver thing. It could just be the driver problem. If you don't clean out your old drivers using a drive cleaner, it is always possible old files will mix with the new ones causing some games more problems than others. If you're looking for a free Drive Cleaner program, PM me.This may not come as a surprise to you, but 90% of the games I've played within the past 5 years are 10 times worse than The Witcher. I waited a year later after rebuilding my computer to buy it. If you think this game is bad, try playing Neverwinter NIghts 1 and 2. Probably the worse two games ever released, for bugs that is (Great games though). By mid September, the Enhanced edition will be released. Perhaps you should take your copy back and wait for the newest release with all the new eye candy. One more thing, you're using an ATI card I believe. Download the latest Frameworks 3.5 from Microsoft if you haven't already (You probably have, but just a thought if you didn't). You can uninstall all of your frameworks and then download the 3.5 version, it comes with everything it needs to run. ATI uses Frameworks for the Catalyst Control stuff.http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=333325fd-ae52-4e35-b531-508d977d32a6&displaylang=en

RE: Game resolution -- I find that 1280x1024 suits my tastes just fine, too. I can play The Witcher at 1600x1200 and even do very decent video capturing using FRAPS. However, I find that using 1600x1200 makes using the mouse a bit more .... annoying/bothersome .... as it takes longer for the cursor to move across the larger screen. Not only that, but, in many games the Sub-Titles [which I need due to deafness] become too small to actually read while still playing. I've got several lengthy videos of the game captured at 1600x1200 as well as 1280x1024. So far, even prior to the patches, I never encountered the stuttering problem mentioned by the OP.

I took The Witcher back to the store today and exchanged it for Sins Of A Solar Empire.I guess if you got the game running sweet with none of the issues that I have had then you are just one of the lucky ones. However, as soon as I told the store assistant my problems he nodded in agreement with me stating that he had the exact same problems with The Witcher and had no problems in me exchanging it for another game.I will most definitely be checking out the EE when it is released but I think I may opt for the DEMO first before I go throwing my money at a game that probably will be still laden with issues and bugs.[MOD]Watch.Language.10Q[/MOD]
