Destroyable Terrain

A poll then! For I love them.

Destroyable buildings, roads, cars and your face. Would you like to see it in-game? To what degree? Pockmarks? Flaming cars? Lightposts that fall down waaaaaaay too easily, ( I had some friends that hit one in a car once..yeah, they really aren't flimsy. Post 1 Car 0), buildingd where you can shoot the windows out but the walls are bulletproof and immortal? Doors that fly off?

Remember that coding this stuff can be pretty challenging, especially to do it in a non-silly/flimsy way. And it can hammer hell out of your plots if the players or NPCs just nuke Arasaka Tower in order to skip that whole tedious fight-through-ten-levels thing.

So. Vote. Detail. Etc.

Red Faction 1 on the PS2....need I say more Sar?

But I will anyways.
As for Arasaka...reinforced everything..also doesn't he have several high yield nukes at strategic points in his building to deter stupid people from doing stupid things? Or was that just for a certain book? But still....at least make trees destroyable if they're in game...damn masterwork mithril trees of GTA4 always interfered with awesome chase scenes. I would love to see destroyable buildings but to destroy them would take either a tank, heavy aerodyne or a good ton o' explosives. Then to turn it on it's ear, come back around after awhile and see a construction crew actively rebuilding the building...that you can screw with still. Also Sewerrs..destructible sewers...boosters...ncpd...1 street...10 lbs of c4 strategically placed..sitting back..then running like hell from C-Swat. I'll come back in 10 hours for more thoughts.

meh, it's fun and can look neat, but it doesn't ever really add anything to the game overall. My vite would be to keep it simple, save the resources for something more important than just being able to fuck up everything in sight.

Some sort of destructible environment would be nice but not too much.

Like many things here, it comes down to whether or not I want them to put time, money, and processing power into it. My answer is... no not really. I voted light.

I would say that poll is wrong. How can you put in same option "cars" and "small building". I would say that if there will be cars then destroying cars is must-have and on other hand destroying buildings, even small, is total overkill.

I'd be disappointed if we couldn't destroy doors though like in DE:HR

It'd be cool if we can go through windows somehow too

If the collision engine is right and you can actually kill NPC with a collapsing building, why should I not be able to down the building with a one-use throwaway rocketlaunchers?
But if the wall is reenforced, a whole bundle of rockets should be only just enough to blast a hole through, not to bring the building down.
Keep it real.

It's redundant. Cyberpunk is about the characters, the nitty gritty feeling of you pursuing redemption, the rock n roll atmosphere. It's not about explosions and blowing up as many things as possible. So no, I hope there isn't a huge emphasis on destruction. Maybe standard things like braking glass, blowing up a car and breaching a door with a shotgun. Other than that, I'll pass.

The best games I've played did not necessarily involved destroying every single thing we can see.

Actually, after a while, I think we will not care about that.

I'd save the resources for what actually matters, and having a great gaming experience.

Id after that, there is space for destroying whatever we see, lovely, I won't complain =P

Finding a rock to break trough a window is always easier than finding a rock to flatten a city...

Just because it is possible does not mean you have to...besides....if I spend the money on a rocket launcher, I would not use that rocket to randomly flatten a highraiser just because it looks nice...I will need that thing for the anti-grav tanks chasing after me half an hour later.

Ah!
You're not in the right mood.
I flatten that skyscrapper just because I can. Who needs reason ? :D

not really necessary, maybe have some type of walls made out of soft materials like wood would be penetrated by bullets, i remember COD 4 had something like that

Counterstrike Source had good scripting in relationship to shooting through objects (not through walls, but through wood etc), as certain objects would effect angle of direction, decrease speed and decrease damage of bullets, some would stop and some would do nothing (windows etc).

I voted for the second option down, although when you say small buildings, I have sheds and garages in mind, rather than small houses.

The thing is, if the destructibility of the game world is set too high, then a simple shoot out involving explosives (grenades, RPG's etc) could be more detrimental to the game world and your experience of it, than anything else.

Cyberpunk is a dystopian environment where there is still a functioning (if maybe failing) government with laws and rules. In today's world, if someone destroyed a building or committed mass murder, you can bet your ass you'd be hunted down until your only hope is to kill everyone or die in a hole.

Having said all this, it would be nice to effect environment to complete tasks. Spec Ops - The line tried this with glass windows holding back sand, which you could shoot out to pour sand over your enemies, but this was poorly done and didn't look very good.

Simple environmental dynamics could work though. Fire hydrants mixed with electrical cables could give electrifying results.

I feel like Stranglehold (game based off John Woo's Hard Boiled) attempted this; environmental attacks to your foes. Felt a little forced, imo.

I don't need EVERYTHING to be destructable, but I think some logical exceptions should be applied. I should be able to snipe my contract target through the glass window of the restaraunt they're dining at. I should be able to blow up any vehicle, provided I have the right gun (or explosive) for the job.

On that note: I'm curious if CDPR will introduce damage threshold mechanics. I don't care how many rounds you have; if you're using a .22 and regular ammo, you should not be able to put enough rounds in to a tank to blow it up.

In terms of small buildings, I think of the gas station blowing up in Robocop. Small dwellings where urban warfare has obviously occurred. Destroying a car, really destroying it, takes a similar amount of energy. Shooting holes is one thing, but actually rendering it into component bits? BooOOOm.

Destroying is also a variable, too. Making a room or building substantially different - blasted couch, ruined TV, all windows blown - that works for my idea of destruction. Car on fire and obviously ruined would count too.

I, too, am interested in damage thresholds. Perhaps they will use the SP rating as 2020 does? I would like to shoot through the wall beside the door - or fire an RPG into your house and watch the flaming curtains billow outwards through the shattered glass...

What I don't want is the plastic-sense many games give me, where I cannot affect the gameworld no matter what I do. Urrrgh.

Hear hear.

I think the trickiest thing about destructable environments is object permanence. There's PLENTY of sandbox titles where I've laid siege in the middle of the street, leaving a wake of burned out cars. I go, run around the block one, and they're gone. De-rezzed. Like nothing ever happened.

I don't expect ruined cars and shot-up buildings to stay there in perpetuity, but it should take *some* amount of time for the city / building owners to get things back in order.
