Dex - a cyberpunk action adventure RPG

An interesting release:

It's now available DRM-free in the Humble Store (with Linux version). Hopefully it will come out on GOG as well.

Bought it! Of course I did. I'm a sad, sad little cyber addict. Picked it up for $18 US from the Humble store, no valves required. Which should make Gil mildly happy...

I'll let you know how it is.

So, I d/l the DRM free version.

Clicked start.

It went to the Steam page. I kid you not. And didn't give me the Play option either, which makes sense, since, you know, I didn't have the Steam key or version installed.

Whatever.

I went and got the Steam key from my d/l page. Muttered to myself. Installed the Steam version. It starts!

Aaaand goes to black screen, run as admin or not.

Verified cache..70 files failed. Reacquiring.

ONWARDS TO GLORY..and patches.

Now when Witcher 3 comes out, this WILL happen to us. And you are totally free to bitch like mad about it. I shall set up a special thread, titled, I dunno, "I HATE RELEASE WEEK." Or, "WHY DEVS HATE YOU AND ALL YOUR KIND."

Sigh. Now to wait on the rebuild aaaaaand try again.

Okay! Got it going! Looks REALLY cool and I'm not a side scroller guy. Dramatic cyberpunk voice over intro done...Already I hacked an elevator. On the run from some hit team in MetalGear or whatever this game calls it. Going to wait for the save game patch before I get too far.

But quite liking the first five minutes.

Nice find, Gil! Later, when I do something horrible to you for talking penguins one time too many, remind me of this and I'l un-do it. Probably.

Still wish I had my DRM free version working, though. I don't mind Steam, but it's a lot like putting on hiking boots when you just want to run barefoot. Gets the job done, but really makes nothing better.

Okay, the skills are all delciiously wantable.

Endurance makes you tougher and gives you more implants. Dammit I want ALL the implants!

Melee makes you hit harder and do combos and have unblockable blows!

Ranged does all the things ranged does...and lets you use shotguns and SMGs. Need.

Hacking of course lets you hack..which lets you bypass and see cool stuff.

Then there are the smaller skills - Persuade, Lockpick, Barter and a locked skill called "AR"? Artificial Reality? Assault Rifle? I don't know, but I want it.

One skill point per level and 2-6 levels..but the levels increase in cost.

Apparently there are sneak options, haven't seen any yet. Some sewer-dwelling gang member just called me "girl" one time too many. It's time for a lesson in manners!

Glad you liked it :) I'll probably buy it as soon as it will come out on GOG. It's weird that HB release is so tied to Steam even though they call it DRM-free. Looks like developers are in talks with GOG already:

We are also discussing the release on GOG, so it is quite possible that in a few weeks Dex will also be available through GOG. (More info on that soon.)

On the positive side, by the time it will come out on GOG, some bugs can be already fixed :) A pity I just discovered the game recently. I would have supported their crowdfunding campaign.

Yeah, it's...it's pretty playable.

Keep in mind I -am- hopelessly addicted to the genre, but even so...from my last post at 10:41 am up there I played it pretty much non-stop until 5:30 p.m. Sooo, yeah. Playable indeed.

Didn't see any more in-game bugs, unless you count some small AI weirdness and I -think- my anti-electrical damage cyberware doesn't work, damn it.

Some Linux specific game breaking bugs were reported about the hacking mini games. So hopefully developers will fix them soon.

Anyway, I'm glad that it came out. Such games aren't common.

A great game with a great atmosphere, I just hope they spend a bit of time fixing the bugs.

You probably know by this point, but judging by what I've seen in the launch trailer AR must stand for Augmented Reality... or Ana Rosa Quintana.

It does and among it's handy-dandy gifts is the ability...to hack people. Giggle.

GOG decided not to add Dex

Reply from developers:

sadly we have received a negative response from GOG, so Dex won't be there any time soon. So please go for Steam or Humble Store version.

No idea what happened there, but that's annoying. I might end up buying it on HB.

So disappointed... not sure at whom. Was this GOG's fault or was it because the game didn't meet some quality standards? Because some games that are on GOG (the games themselves and the versions) leave something to be desired. Maybe they didn't reach an agreement, don't know how the negotiations go between GOG and developers.

Dex got a Polish/Italian translation

Dex, the side-scroller cyberpunk RPG got an Italian and Polish translation. Whoever hasn't tried it yet, its a nice little exploration RPG and has a lot of the cyberpunk feel (some parts feel a bit like Deus Ex).

Did they release the enhanced edition on Humble Bundle already? GOG release never materialized.

I had high hopes for Dex, as I played it in Alpha before it had the plot in, or even the hacking. As an open world adventure game, it was excellent. But when they added the plot, my opinion lowered drastically. Chosen One style plots work well in some games, but in a Cyberpunk game they destroy, and I mean Destroy, the worldbuilding. How can you have a truly bleak world if a chosen one is born to save it?

When the plot was revealed (about 30 minutes in, iirc) to be of the Chosen One variety, I gave up on the game completely. The idea runs so counter to cyberpunk that I couldn't stomach the game any longer.

Just bought Dex on GOG (I waited for a while for this). Looks very good so far and works flawlessly on Linux.
