Direct 3D 9 device initialization error

The game used to work properly but all of a sudden every time I try to launch it, the game only appear as a black screen and an error window appears stating the error in the title.
I tried to reinstall directX 9, update the graphic card drivers and reinstall the game. No luck whatsoever...
any ideas?

Knowing the system specs could be of some help, are you using a laptop, for example? I have seen people getting this error when the game was using the integrated Intel graphics on laptops that also have an Nvidia GPU.

Nope.
GTX 560 Ti
Intel core i5 3.3Ghz
8GB RAM

Uninstalling the Nvidia 3D driver seems to have worked for some people who encountered the same issue. Also, on newer versions of Windows, if DirectX 9 is for some reason configured in "software only" mode, then this error occurs.
