I went back and found the thread and they definitely did say in the linked interview that they wouldn't bother with pirates. They also said the complete opposite in an article before that one which almost resulted in me neutering slim with garden shears. Fun reading for newbies: old arguing

I half-disagree with the innovation part. Innovation is only detrimental to sales if its advertised on the box and/or in massive quantities. As most people hate change if its too rapid and too intense. To paraphrase Yahtzee. "Its like having your trusty sedan replaced with a submarine." And for that submarine you need a whole new host of driving lessons and manuals.

I cant tell you how disappointed I have been with game developers lately. There are so many scams like Watchdogs, BF4, COD Ghosts. I'm just sick and tired of them lieing and making shitty games. I hope Cyberpunk has a crew of people who are committed to making a great game.

Quickly done, quickly sold.
There are no more artistic team in those big developper, it's all about money and "how much will we sell of that shit?", all the budget goes in marketing, games are less and less original.
Honnestly I was a really big player back then, now I just stick to a few fighting game, GTA, Fallout, etc... because, well, most of all the game just do the same shit over and over again, no more risks...
I think Cyberpunk will be actualy good (if it keep sticking on the original concept), CDPR will have 2 or 3 big deal to beat:
- Fleshing out the raw, realistic and gritty background, story, etc...
- Having a good gameplay, not the awkward "click click" from the witcher
- Being ready to take a lot of risks, doing something fresh (which is granted somewhat by the content from Cyberpunk)

If they fail at this, the game will mostly sucks and it'll be a no buy for me, as much as I love Cyberpunk, I'd rather play the pnp more than play an half-assed game.

It just seems that the more video games goes forward, the less developer are imaginatives, back then we had 16bits with awesome games (i'm not a retro geek, but still), you could see a lot of artists work behind them, they were "caught" by the technology, they had to work their way around it, to counter the machine's power limitation.
Now, they can do whatever they want, but they just release crappy FPS, "run in a corridor for 5h" adventure game, remakes of game (worst than the original, mostly), etc...

It strike everywhere, video game, music, movies, art, etc....
It all turn around, using the same already-done stuff trying to have some attitude, when in fact they just screw a concept and throw it off for money.

On the other hand thought, innovation is a real career killer too....
Nowadays, everyone "love" the Dreamcast, you know "dude! that console was so huuuuge! too much great game! so much epicness, sega really knew what they were doing".... And that fucking piss me off....

Why? because I owned the Dreamcast back then (and still now), People weren't "OMG that console is so huge", no, they were all SHITTING ON IT! like if there were no tomorrow, you know "that console sucks, and... What? Shenmue? what kind of fucking shitty game is it? etc...."
By the time, everyone were buying the crap from sony, to kill it, like "Ok guys, we'll have a DVD player, and our console will be sooooo much powerfull that the graphics will be as powerfull as a Pixar Movie" (and seriously, I'm not kidding, it's really what they said to the press conferences). But, no, everyone bought the bullshit from Sony, and Sega crashed hard.
"Yes but PS2 had good games".... Yes, and those games (GTA, etc...) were about to be released on Dreamcast too... You'd just have to support it to keep it alive.

Btw, yes, now Sega really sucks at making game, but what I'm meaning is more "buy interesting games, support good developper" and just piss on those Activition bullshit, and boycott those crappy developper, they need to sink, otherwise the video game world will goes worst and worst.
There are really few guys putting decent games nowadays, they need support, or we'll end up having only a bunch of GTA clones and COD clones...

The main problem in fact, is that they're aiming their games for EVERYONE, when at first, a game isn't meaned for everyone, so of course, that lower the quality over the quantity, we live in a age where any casual should be able to play whatever they want, so that basicaly kill the challenge...
I've nothing against casual, but paying 70€ for an half assed game, with a cheap gameplay, no challenge, and worth 4hour of playing it untill it's finished, yes... I call it wallet rape, or Video Scam if you prefer, there are less excuses when it comes out from big developper.

Like Resident Evil... Look at it now, it's a crappy action game :/
When it come to crappy game Capcom has learned how to serve us, milking us just as we need, thank you capcom.
...Why does the old RE where good? Because of zombies? Because of guns? Because of gore? No!
Because it was pure survival-horror, come on guys, don't reinvent the steel, just scratch your head to make a good survival horror, don't be affraid to hire a few horror-movie writters to help you, I don't know.
With modern capacities you could be able to put a survival-horror who'd bury every shitty horror movie released recently (because yes, horror movies sucks nowadays too....), just imagine what you can do today with a setting ala Resident Evil 2, in a open world racoon city, the kind of hardcore survival horror, I don't know, but well, that would be nicer than turning it in an action game.

Just like the Occulus Rift, everyone is freaky about it, but IMO it's like the 3D glasses for the Movies.... A crappy movie, even in 3D stay a crappy movie, you just see the crap moving around, but in the end it still crap...
The problem could also come from the "art school" for video game, which much like cinema, just "format" people to do the same stuff over and over, when most of the greatest movie makers never gone to any art school, they all learned by themself, same in music and video game...

In my job, usualy, it's logical to be aware of what you do, and having to give quality to your clients... otherwise they don't come back to buy your stuff.
It should work the same for the video game, ok I respect that developper do what they like and all, but come on, think about the guys who'll play it in the end, we're not a bunch of stupid sheep just willing to give you money...

Just my 2cents.

What I think it boils down to is what the majority of players want in a game, at least according to Marketing because it doesn't matter if a game is good, bad, or indifferent as long as it sells.
And that is a game where at the end they can say any of the following:
1) I beat the game with X million XP and/or $
2) I beat the game at X level
3) I beat the game in X amount of time
4) I destroyed and/or killed everything in the game
See a pattern here?
A storyline is irrelevant and often seen as a hindrance because it doesn't allow players the "freedom of choice" to ignore it and "beat the game".

Whereas as a RPer when I finished DA: O I look back and say
a) I made Alister king with Anora because while Anora was a very capable administrator she was an uninspiring leader
b) I let Morrigan perform her ritual because I think the possible return of an old god will be a good thing, the Chantry is becoming to all pervasive
c) I took Liliana as my lover because I liked her passion for life

See the difference?
The "what" each type of gamer feels is an accomplishment is vastly different, and it's far, Far, FAR easier to add new MOBs, weapons, and skills to a game and call it "new and improved" then it is to create a new and interesting storyline.

Sard Edit: the statement placed here was moderately rude. Let's not have many more of these.

Unless the story is utter crap (GTA IV).

OK name me one person that think in terms of $ as an end in itself?

Unless he's playing a management game, which almost by definition is a niche genre.

How many people do speedruns?I certainly never did.

If anything games ahve focused more on storyline at the detriment of gameplay.

And people skip stories not because they don't like stories but because video games stories tend to be crap.

Ding! I'm sure what you meant to, say , IN A MUCH MORE DIPLOMATIC, MUCH LESS INSULTING CHOICE OF WORDS, was, "Well, I see what you say, and I must say, i disagree. Let me tell you why."

Right?

Oh, good. Feel free to correct it yourself!

"This post is utter nonsense" technically is a reason. Not a good one or one backed up with details, but still. Also, you all need to quit being mean to poet, because I'm courting him to be MY enemy. Find your own archnemeses, jerks.

Also, GOG is giving away a game today only. Less than 12 hours left, if I remember right. Free stuff waters down the disappointment somewhat, right?

Wait. I though poor 2325 or whatever was your archnemesis? YOU ONLY GET ONE, SIR. New Forum Rule. Unless you're a mod. We get 10.

Free stuff only moderately waters the disappointment down. Although with Original Sin, AN RPG and Wasteland 2 AN RPG, ( loot gathering games...amazing lack of knowledge) coming out, I'm pretty undisappointed.

When does Wasteland 2 come out, anyway? I still have to buy and play the first one.

And you mods can change your names endlessly, ban people, AND have tons of enemies? Unfair. I'm tempted to start spamming just to make you work for all the power you've been handed. By the way, how do you feel about goose jackets?

End of August. I started W1 just recently.

I hadn't played the first one since I was younger than..well..you. It does not hold up well, to my tastes. I prefer 2.

Love 'em. We mods are truly blessed creatures. Marcin Marmot was just telling me all his deepest secrets, in fact - like what Iwin looks like singing, "Singing in the Rain." He has a stellar singing voice apparently.

Ha, everyone knows that they're both more into rap. I used to have PMs between me and MM360 that would back that up, but they were nuked in the forum move.

Not even kidding. But it's adorable when you pretend!

Well, I doo~oooo~ooo have a witness. Someone moderator-y, even. I think I prefer leaving you in the dark, though, inches away from the sweet, sweet truths I could blow your mind with.

Perfect for a thread about disappointment, really.
