Does a broken launch take a game's momentum away?

+
meh games been fine for me, didn't like the gfx so i downloaded a mod, got the xp bug so i downloaded a mod. Best game i've played in long time!

Since the bug came out I stopped playing since I already lost some XP for few quests in Novigrad.
On (almost) highest difficulty it's quite annoying I must say. I understand that the game might have bugs but lack of precise information about fix arrival is very confusing to me. Besides that I had no problems and the game is superb. However immersion is lost due to unplanned break

Just go ahead and keep playing, if it's just the exp bug.
I had the bug myself and eventually decided to finish the game anyway. I can say for sure that I got no exp for any main quests on skellige and for many side quests and contracts. But the thing is: The main quests after skellige keep pumping exp up your arse as if there was no tomorrow.
When I decided to continue my game, I got myself a mod, that would allow me to give myself exp via console on the PC version. I decided to give myself 2000 exp (exactly one level) for skellige giving me nothing. That's it. After I finished the game, I had just reached level 35, without my little cheat it would have been 34. So what. The best witcher gear is for level 31, the really big craftables (i have a 42 recipe) are out of reach anyway and the biggest enemies you have to deal with at the end of the game are around level 31. So with or without the exp bug and with or without cheating to compensate for it, you'll end up out-leveling the final enemies by 3-4 levels and can equip the strongest gear way before anyway.
It made no difference whatsoever. I didn't even spend my last 5 ability points, since I had already filled all 12 ability slots and I guess having 4 or 5 surplus ability points by the end of the game doesn't make any difference either.

So just go ahead.. The main quests in the later chapters really yield so much more exp than you would think. You'll find yourself entering a series of main quests at, say, level 23 and by the time it's done and you can even travel to a blacksmith again, you're 28 or something like that.

Bugs that prevent you from completing main quests at all however are something completely different and these are a problem. But don't let the exp bug keep you from playing the game.

For MMOs that requires a sustained player base yes, but for games like this where all they care about is the initial sale, no.

Don't underestimate how many white knight apologists there are out there that are perfectly content to bend over and take it from developers. Apparently they have no issues paying to be beta testers for unfinished products.

The alternative explanation is that many people have games that don't suffer from that many bugs. Aside from not being able to play yesterday the only bugs I have experienced were either fixed with a hard reset or were texture glitches that quickly sorted themselves out.

Playing a game that is bugged is a terrible experience, so I do not blame those (like yourself) who are upset at the state of their game, but to claim that others' opinions are tainted by irrational emotion (which is what you are doing when you say that people are 'white knighting' the game developers) ignores a variety of much more likely explanations.

Sure. This is not a broken launch, but I do think the exp bugs plus others are the reason w3 isn't at the top of he steam charts.

Never played a game that was broken at launch, so no idea.
Aside of a little audio stuttering occasionally, my copy of TW3 has been bug free.

If you think The Witcher 3 in its current state qualifies as "broken", by the way, I have the feeling your experience in this hobby may not be that extensive.

I tend to agree to your statement to a point but with all honestness...the games you mention (and i played most of them cept JA) aren't even close to the witcher in terms of complexity. I guess just the Questline arround the Red Baron has more correlations then half of Baldurs Gate.

I play since 1979 with an Atari 2600 being my first console. So i guess i qualify as experienced player. There have been bugs ever since but back the day, when you had just a dial up connection there was no way to distribute patches like today. You could buy a gaming magazine with a CD that had a patch and that was the only option. So publishers tried their very best to release a product, that had no bugs at all or at least were functional. I still remember the mess called Ultima Ascencion (which is still one of my all time favorites).

Anyway, The Witcher 3 will be one of my lifetime favorites, it excells comparable other games in so many ways that i can condone that filthy exp bug. But you can't compare this to those old games you mention and then call others noobs =)

While we speak of it i think it's time for a good old Crusader: No Remorse session.

@QATesterIRL please stop with the name calling .

Come on fellas let`s play nice and not let personal comments get in the way .

Bugs aside and my feeling that RED punched PC users in the face and laughed and walked away, i still love the guys, their effort and the resulting game.....once it gets fully fixed, but I can wait, the world doesn't revolve around the Witcher games and the real world is far far more interesting than anything Geralt could imagine.

I am a certified counselor for both professional and personal development. Retired military, I am in high demand for my counseling skill set, it makes for a nice income being retired. Now, on to business.

To address someone with a potential problem lets relate to a story. A person that likes to use "Bend over", "white knight apologists", "god damn" in ranting about a game they are incapable of getting to work and/or are unwilling to wait to have these problems fixed, In this story, the person may be showing signs of a broader problem with themselves than just playing a game or trying to play it while its not functioning properly for them and becoming angry and feeling the need to post about these game issues. The story then develops as the person tries to deflect counter arguments using more, vulgar than norm, comments against others in defense of their own views.

I suggest if a person In real life or in a story is having such anger issues they attack and lash out because of a game, they seek professional help. This acting out on the forums is not needed nor is it encouraged in society. The person in the story should realize with NEARLY everyone against them......just maybe, they might indeed be the problem or part of it and are unwilling to admit it. Seek help.

If the person in the story needs to lash out at this post, please realize in doing so you do have a problem. If the RED team would like to email me I can give a professional response and recommend real life actions that may be needed to calm this individual down before something escalates.

Well Diablo 3 did fine, even really well at release and that game was a broken mess or at least how Blizzard handled D3 was a huge mess. So in short no not really a broken launch doesn't take away a game's momentum.
Just wondering what this has to do with W3? The game wasn't broken at launch, the game breaking bugs people are experiencing are terrible, but not everybody affected by them. The exp bug was patched in a week or two after release, so that doesn't count.

Many are assuming the extent of the issues are global, there not. I've had one bug with my original game which blocked progression, so I'm waiting for a fix (Kings Gambit). So I started a new game with 1.04 and in nearly 50 hours of play I've experienced 1 crash and zero other issues. The game looks and play beautifully with nearly everything on ultra, hairworks, sharpening and HBAO+ on (frame rate generally solid around 51 to 55 after 353.06). I think most of the whining is not representative of everyone's experience. So I doubt it will hurt the games momentum at all. However vindictive fans with hyper inflated expectations acting like children, might cause problems.

People with problems with the game -- game's so bugged I can't walk straight, can't get my horse gallop properly, can't kill this, that; can't get to point A to point B without seeing additional physical bugs and what not.

Damn. Game's so bugged I can't continue playing this piss shite of a game because this monster is beating me to a pulp due to my low-level char. Game's so bugged I can't progress properly because of the incorrect XP being granted by quests.

I'm wondering how the hell did I finish the game if it was so bugged, unplayable.

I'll let you know when I see/play a game broken at launch. People really throw that word around and assume if they have problems those like them are legion . With Witcher 3 , Skyrim and others I've love it just doesn't seem so and reviews and sales seem to back up my opinion.

@thelostdunmer
Likely because there are a number of factors that decide if you will be affected by a given bug.
Different approaches to the game etc, hardware, software etc. For example, I never had problems with Skyrim, despite people calling that game a buggy mess at launch, were the other people fibbing? Was I just lucky?
Both myself and my brother have had the exp bug, I'm on PC, he's on PS4. We encountered it in different areas and different platforms, does that mean everyone has it? Are you telling a lie about not having any problems? From my personal experience it would seem so.
That you have no problems is great, I just don't see why some feel the need to jump on those who do, especially when if such people were not having problems why would they be on the tech support forum when they could be playing? Defending the company? How does that benefit you in this instance? Their sales are impressive, I can guarantee anything on this forum won't make them stop producing games, nor will they abandon this game because a few people vented on a forum. The ranting will not slow down the process nor will any white knighting help speed it up. The mods are more than capable of policing the forum and have been keeping it relatively clear thus far.
Frustration should be understandable, people paid money, many are finding issues that damages their enjoyment of the game, and the communication regarding the patch has a been a bit ...dicey.

On to the topic at hand, in this day and age for a single player game it doesn't seem to have any affect. Lets not forget this is a great game regardless of it's faults, the frustration on view shows that, as people want to experience the game it's just there are a fair few little niggling bugs and a few big ones that need to be sorted. Once it's fixed up I would heartily recommend it to anyone.

How can a bug that prevent people from even playing the game (on X1) not be broken. Thats as broken as games can go. It was fixed (tio be fair)

How can not gaining XP not game broken in an RPG. I take the silly falling infinitity & stucking at wall of AC unity to not being able to play the game, or the hard crushs I experienced that required a hard PC reset.

W3 is not a complete mess like some people claim, but its not also butter smooth that people made it out to be. People just too defensive towards CDPR.
