i dont get what is with this making Modern games... does that means they have dumb it down? no tactical camera...pfft
Easy answer - Money talks.More complex answer - AAA games cost a fortune to make these days - licensing fees, production costs, graphics, Voice actors, etc - thus even to 'break even' they have to sell a certain number of units. But even then, it is possible to make both a good game and turn a profit. However, the companies are owned by share holders. Simply turning a consistant but moderate profit is not enough these days. Every profit must be greater than the last, and being usually short sighted creatures your typical shareholder doesn't care if they 'eat the seed corn' to get instant cash (see what happened during the GFC). Customer loyalty or reputation means little if it affects the bottom line, and the executives of the company are responsible to the shareholders (and their bonuses) to meet the 'more profits' expectations. So to increase profits after the last big thing, executives can do one of two things - decrease costs or increase sales (a third way is to nickle and dime with DLCs but thats another story). Cutting costs means more recycling engines and areas, reducing length of games, etc while increasing sales means appealing to a broader audience.
I remember an interview where Bio said they were aiming to attract the CoD crowd to increase their audience - and that is pretty damn low bar. Its like trying to attract people to a Shakespeare drama by visiting a comic store.Hence you end up with a mish mash of rubbish. Any depth is removed due to cutting costs, and what is left is 'streamlined' to appeal to a wider audience. The sad part is - they appear to actually believe their own hype. The game has serious problems - it's not bad, just mediocre (with some major bugs) - and has broken their fanbase something majorly, and yet they still seem to think it is the "greatest thing ever".
