It sounds like they didn't heed the criticisms of DA2's rushed first area and lack of back story for Hawke. These guys are still focused on making it an actiony game. Bleh.

It's possible there might be some additional narrative padding in the form of a cutscene or two in the final (patched?) consumer version. Right now it doesn't look good though and to be honest I fear this is it. Those Russian vids suggest that normal difficulty (and not just easy) can be played as an MMO-action hybrid game controlled with gamepad. Tactical mode is only needed in some encounters, as far as I can judge. Even that might not be necessary if objects and enemies don't suddenly pop into existence...

That leaves hard and nightmare for a tactical game. Not many people will play that, even among those who prefer a tactical game.

Ah, well. I've got Dishonored to finish, and Original Sin too.

From the videos the combat looks really bad, the hardest encounters they only kept attacking monster like in an mmo, a
the difference is that in mmos like WoW you need a hell of ability to combo the spells and by so a lot of ability, in this one no, is just an auto-attack battle and eventually some spells. If you can't win a fight, just use more potions, or lower difficulty or upgrade level/armor, and done!
Oh original sin, I forgot that game >.<

What the guy said about plenty of stuff to do, but none of it feeling compelling sounds exactly like what I already guessed:

Honestly, I feel like Dragon age would have been better off the way it was, rather than being an open world. It works for The Elderscrolls, because the games' focus really isn't the main quest, and you can entertain yourself with the game without ever touching most of it. I obviously can't say for certain with this, but it doesn't look like that'd be the case with dragon age. The side quests are more like filler here. In TES, you can make characters that pretty much concern themselves only with sidequests.

In other words, there's only so many times that you'll be able to play through the game, running through this big open area for these sidequests when the main attraction where the most focus is likely always the main quest. It's different in elderscrolls because they weave all these side attractions together, so a side quest can lead to something much bigger, whereas from the looks of it, DA I just has it as stuff to do on the side while your ultimate goal is still in mind. I can't say for certain of course, but that's the impression I get from the game and it's sort of military strategy deal on the map.

Has me worried for Witcher as well, but if they can make the majority of the side quests interesting enough to pursue on their own, and not just something you do when you get it while you traverse from main quest to main quest, in a way that encourages exploration, then they'll do fine. Otherwise, you'll start ignoring things quick and it'll feel like a bunch of empty space.

Well, Brad Gallaway actually defended that infamous review which gave The Witcher 2 the score of 4.5; Gallaway said that he "only played about six hours of Witcher 2" and "didn't feel compelled to play more", and that he "found [himself] agreeing with many of the points [that review] raises" (seriously, read these points of that review, you'll have a good laugh).
I'd take his words on DA:I with a grain of salt.

On a side note: who's going to try themselves at the task of making Ciri, Yennefer or Geralt with the DA:I character creator?

Oh now I know why this guy sounds familiar. I've read both of those articles and thought how idiotic they were.
This has made me feel a lot better about DA:I, since I don't respect his opinion any more. If you can't appreciate the Witcher 2, your opinions on good games are worthless to me.

edit: Let's also all take a moment to notice that the same reviewer that gave the Witcher 2 a 4.5, gave Dragon Age 2 a 7. So yeah.

Definitely going to do a playthrough as Geralt so I can romance Dorian for teh lulz.
But yeah playing as Ciri for one playthrough would be really good fun. Have they reintroduced the Arcane Warrior specialisation? If so I think Ciri would be one of them.

But normally when I play Dragon Age all my characters look identical and are named after me... and consequently look like me. Same with Skyrim......

I'll take all reviews with a grain of salt, especially those giving it overwhelming praise before the game's even out. It smells like catfish to me. Generally, the only game reviews I trust fully are Angry Joe's. I only paid real attention to that last review because they flew him out, wined and dined him, and still gave it a negative review.

But, I was already wary from the start with all his comparisons to Skyrim, since he clearly didn't understand that game well enough if he thought that's all Skyrim was.

edit: As for making Witcher characters, that's like... literal blasphemy, lol. So no. I'd never subject Geralt to that.

Ha, to be honest, I already planned on fucking with her as much as possible. I bet she's just loving her high rank in the chantry right now. "I had a vision, I swear!" Mmhm. She's so screwed this time.

You make that sound like a bad thing. My dweeby default would still sweep Cassandra right off her feet.

What about the female defaults? Are they hot, at least?

They're pretty but not hot, at least not in the traditional Hollywood way. That's a good thing if you ask me.

To be fair, most of his defense of that reviewer was not so much on the points stated but on fans piling on on the guy (which he kind of deserved, for such a sloppy review). Brad himself didnt said too much more about the Witcher 2 than "it's not the game for me", actually not giving too many reasons why.

He DID loved Origins, so that IS a red flag for me... I think I'll watch a Let's play of act 1 of Inquisition (possibly Toegoff's) and decide there if this is gonna be a bargain bin buy or I'll just pass on the game entirely...
