@Unkindled Out of curiosity, what are your PC specs?
I've got an i5 quad core 3470 CPU, and my graphics card is a 970 GTX. My ram is 8. Thought it was 16, but I think that's if I put in two more cards, but all you need is at least 4 for the game to run effectively I hear.
I guess I should also mention that I had most of my settings on Ultra or higher. According to everything I've read though, my computer should be able to handle that. And it does. No choppiness, nothing. Just crashes and freezes at random intervals, and of various frequency. No pattern at all.
Ambient Occlusion is on SSAO, and antialiasing or whatever is completely off.
I recently dropped shadow quality to medium and everything else to high. And what do you know, the crashing stopped... for now. This is annoying however, because I notice the shadow detail drop, and it's not terrible, but you know. Once you've seen how detailed and good something looks, it sucks to go back because you'll always know.
I actually haven't noticed any detail or graphics decrease from dropping texture from "fade touched" to High, but when I drop mesh from ultra to high, there's this annoying little armor clip on my shoulderpad that I see every. single. time. Grrr.
Will test the game to see how it does now. If the change is positive, I'll try upping mesh to get rid of that clip. Maybe bring shadows from medium to high too. But only if this actually stabilizes my game for a while. Otherwise, I can suck it up and deal. Still looks hella better than the console version, and a few extra shadows isn't worth the annoyance.

@Luxorek
Left the game on in skyhold since there's plenty of people around to stress test the game. Didn't crash while I was gone, and battled a giant to see how the game performed there since on bad days like now would usually crash at least once in fights like that. Nothing bad happened, so I guess (FOR NOW) dropping the quality to high is the answer... fuck me. Really wanted to get the most out of my graphics card but I just can't do that for this game until they get their shit together and give fixes.
Also should note, since I used the "to the death" ability and really laid the pounding on that pussy ass giant, it wasn't a very long fight. Probably not the best test ever, lol. Didn't help that my shield bash glitched and knocked him in the air eventually and killed him with fall damage. But whatever, I can't help that I'm a fucking boss, now can I?

Update 2: Aaaaand BAM! Crash crash crash. Game is broken, needs update, that is all. Graphics setting does nothing really. Not much, anyway. Only thing I can do is try to survive this last playthrough or play something else, even though I really don't want to. I want to play this fucking game, crash free goddamn it, but it's just not gonna happen unless EA releases a patch, or someone makes a fan made patch. Either way, if this continues, I think I'll just have to be done with it. Game's just too frustrating to deal with.
At least I got through one playthrough I guess. Not sure I can put up with this any longer.
