Dredd vs Cyberpunk

I am very impressed by the new Dredd movie.
Its bleak and heavy, devoid of unnecessary hollywoodian glitter that pissess me off so much recently. Its the first sci-fi movie that I enjoyed in the 90% area since... Moon I think. District 9 before that and Children of Men before that.

I found MANY Cyberpunk 2020 elements in that movie, the Night City's warzone and gangs reflected as we (me and my friends) envisioned it while playing...

I'm very fond of the vision, the city and overall future, so visceral, portrayed in that movie.

How do you see it fit in the genre, could it be an inspiration for the upcoming title? I see no fault in that.

Dredd was a perfect example of cyberpunk. Cybernetics, drugs, and rock & roll is what cyberpunk is all about, with a healthy heaping of sex and violence. I loved the Slo-mo vision in all of its trippy sparkly drug-addledness. Also the crowded congested blocks, skyscrapers 200 stories high and filled with a medium sized city's population.

The whole thing is exactly how cyberpunk should be done as is was when the idea came out in 80s, not softened up for the modern day.

I did the mistake of watching Prometheus recently. Alias " how Ridley Scott manages to crap all over his masterpiece franchise"...

Saw it a bit back, it is good and really captures the dystopian vision presented in the old 2000ad's. I was a bit sceptical about Karl Urban simply because he's not got a very large physical presence or a big enough chin, but he channels old Joe brilliantly.

From what I'm hearing, the movie bombed at the box office despite positive reviews.

Yeah, it earned 22M$ worldwide and it had 50M$ budget. Hopefully it will be another sign for movie producers that forcing people to watch movies in 3D is not a good idea and we won't see more movies with "3D" in the title.

Aye, the irony is the 3D in Dredd was really well thought out. There were sequences with the slo-mo drug that ... well, you have to see it. This part was magnificent to my taste - other 3D is just, as you said, a gimmick.

But the Dredd... fuck, it was so glamourous to see all that violence in-your-face. It started for me with the kick in the hollywood balls when the pedestrian was run over. I asked myself - when did I see a pedestrian bet hit by a car in a car chase recently? In the last few years? I COULDNT! And I watch a lot of movies.
I loved Dredd for the simple cyberpunkish no-nonsense. Gas granades and the execution on the starirs while passing by... Dredd shooting guards in the back without 'freeze! Nobody move! - and then jumping for cover as the bad guys open fire on main character' we are used to.

Now the best part: SOUNDTRACK!
Man, I'm nailing my brain with this piece of art for a week now. That I would bite in the new game. Synthetic enough. Rock/metal/prog (elements)enough. Sinister and heavy enough. With that distinctive buzz of broken speakers and tv's white noise... Repetetive to give you a trans state of mind - a pourpose. Did I say I like it very much? :D
