Earth Rune on Robust Long Sword causing damage when I unsheathe it?

I just defeated Dmitri in "Troll Trouble" and picked up his Robust Long Sword. The sword has an upgrade slot and I used my Earth Rune on it. Every time I unsheathe the sword it will take a small chunk out of my vitality. Once I sheathe the sword, vitality returns to normal and the damage indicator (blood effect) is seen on my HUD. Is this a bug or intentional?

Robust Longsword has a Damage Reduction on Block of +10

Earth Rune has a Damage Reduction on Block of +5 and a Vitality Increase of +25

As far as I can recall, the Earth Rune increases maximum vitality, but it doesn't increase existing vitality. So if you have, say, 200 Vitality, the maximum would go up to 225, but the actual would still be 200, making it look as though you've suddenly lost some. If you're using potions like Swallow, it should give you the benefit of the rune by increasing your actual almost immediately.
