As I remember, silver is used for beings from other planes or dimensions. So not on "normal" animals but on monsters and the Wild hunt. TBH neither the books nor the games are particularly consistent though about which is which.

It seems you haven't played Witcher 2, haven't yet reached at least act 2 in Witcher 3 and haven't read any books.
Wild Hunt is Dearg Ruadhri, elite cavalry unit from Tir na Lia. They are elves from the other world, they are called Aen Elle (unlike Aen Seidhe elves). They mostly appear in other worlds as a spectres, but they are actually elves.

As I answered in other thread on the same topic - this is most likely due to gameplay reasons. In almost all encounters with Wild Hunt in W3 they come with some kind of monster, which would cause constant swords switches, because Geralt now switches swords, if he attacks with the wrong one.

Unsure if people don't know this by now, but I'll use spoiler tags just in case. I say again, don't press spoiler tag if you don't wanna know. I finished the saga last week, but yeah Witcher 2 also explained it. They are

elves indeed. Namely the Aen Elle that took over another world in another dimension.

In Witcher 1 though they were spectral avatars of themselves. I haven't fought them in the game yet, but yeah, silver sword seems kinda..wrong.

Oh well, both are for monsters. ^_^

I think the majority of early encounters with them is fighting hounds which are elemental monsters, so it would be really annoying to swap in the fight like someone said earlier in the thread. They also come with the frost, and clearly magick is associated with them and their navigators, so just assume you are breaking through that elemental resistance and a steel sword wouldn't be effective since it would freeze and shatter. So while the silver sword is less effective against the plate armor, the steel sword wouldn't even be able to get to the armor.
