What a disaster that movie was! Absolute rubbish.

Everything that's wrong with science fiction in Hollywood these days.

...can't believe we haven't mentioned this already...

Elysium = Crystal Palace? What'cha think?

No more than any other Heaven metaphor is the Crystal Palace. The Palace is a lot healthier than Elysium in terms of culture and economy and is part of a thriving orbital culture. It also has crime, corruption and trouble, partly because it is a part of a thriving economy.

That said, it's generally portrayed as being amazing - the views, the oxygen, the facilities are all among if not the best you can find in human space.

DISCUSS.

I'm late to the party, but here goes...

Elysium has the exact same feel to it as District 9 had. I didn't even realize it was Blomkamp when I was watching it, but something felt so familiar about it. District 9, obviously, was pure genius gold, and anyone claiming otherwise doesn't know shit about good dystopias.

Now, obviously, Elysium has Matt Damon, so people are all like "MATT DAMOOOOON!" about the movie already, before even seeing it. Although, on top of that, it also has Jodie Foster. So people are all like "F you C, you dare to defend Mel Gibson!?" and shit. And it has that latina from a couple movies like Predators.

So, expectations and preconceived notions are running high for this movie.

Then, obviously, there's the fact that this movie seems to be a big "F YOU" to the United States. Slight spoilers follow, sorry.

LA? Of course it takes place in LA. Meaning simply that District 9 showed you can place a great hollywood movie somewhere else than the U.S., but this time Blomkamp seems to have gone with the obvious.

Now, multinationality is brought in a bit with the French, Spanish and even South African, but then there's a certain agency that gets mentioned, which defends Elysium. It's an American agency. Also, Elysium is being defended by American technology created by an American corporation lead by a good old American CEO, who happens to be an asshole, played by William Fichtner, one of the best "never the lead" -actors in Hollywood.

Whereas District 9 was a movie about showing Hollywood that America isn't all that, Elysium seems to be more like a movie to flip off the United States in a big way. Blomkamp is my age, (1979), and he's not American, so I share his views, obviously. We all do, non-Americans (this was a joke, you know.)

So, yeah, I guess it uses an old story (rich people in space, hello Crystal Palace and a gazillion other stories), and I guess it's a bit preachy about corporate America (speficially and exactly America), but it manages to be a very awesome scifi flick nevertheless. I mean, fucking linear frames, man!

Anyways, anyone who thinks Blomkamp does bad movies needs to qualify that asinine remark right now, and I for one am so very hopeful that Blomkamp does more scifi. Maybe District 9 part 2 (District 10? Although as a name it makes no sense), or something else.

Here's a petition: Neill Blomkamp, please make HYPERION.

Thank you, good night.

Deranged and massively anti-American rant aside, perfect ending to the review.

But who would play Martin Silenus? Dennis Hopper is dead.

Watched it couple of days ago and it was really disappointing.Jodie Foster was just awful with that god only knows what accent(which to make it even worse was for some reason changing during the movie).Even the usually solid performance from Fichtner was subpar and the only saving grace was Copley's character.

I think it came off as an anti-American rant, when I wanted to mirror what I thought Blomkamp was trying to do. I wasn't trying to be anti-American myself, but I guess my output wasn't clear again. I edited my post slightly although I'm not sure it'll help much.

The point was, I saw the movie as a bit of an anti-American propaganda piece by Blomkamp, that's all. If it wasn't that, then I suppose I interpreted it completely wrong. Bearing in mind, though, that District 9 was a huge opinion piece and political movie as well, that's where I started off with when thinking about Elysium.

It's hard to say who'd play who in the Hyperion movie, as I'm sure we all have our own image of what the characters are like. There's really not that much official imagery about the characters or places, so it's mostly just what we've imagined in our heads whilst reading the books. It would have to be some ancient, crazy old artsy fartsy guy I guess.

I'd term it more anti-super-rich piece than specifically American, but I can see where you'd get that impression.

Martin Silenus isn't very artsy-fartsy. The nearly-immortal, incredibly asshole-ish and foul mouthed writer of the Cantos does some really horrible things in the books in order to satisfy his muse, as you might recall. His muse being the Shrike.

Rendering the AI space would be pretty cool, too.

Nah, I just think it would have made things refreshing to have a crudely cybered, grotesque-looking action hero who is literally faceless. Dredd showed that it can be done.

I don't think Deunan would see Bri as "grotesque" or any of those things. Nor would the people that litter tumblr with yaoi images of him... *barf*. Fucking stop! You guys are ruining everything!

Ah, but he sees himsef as grotesque. He resents the fact that his is now physically more machine than man. He particularly has issues with his appearance and his image.

Of course, this only appies to the 2004 and 2007 CGI movies, not the 1988 OVA.

It also semi-applies to the much, much more important manga, of which the movies are mere adaptations.

He's pretty much at peace with himself now, but he struggled for quite awhile.

Also - they are partners, not lovers. Briareos is asexual. This relationship can be a little complex, like lots of Shirow-sensei's work.

If ANYone here hasn't read the Appleseed manga, STOP. Go do so.

Briareos is definitely not asexual. C'mon Sard, you have Appleseed Databook! It's said there that all that metal is covered in a filming that acts as his skin (he even colors it halfway through the manga, probably as a statement of racial identity of what he was before going full cyborg), that it can be very sensitive to touch and temperature and that he could regulate body heat so that he wouldn't damage his organic parts among which the book counts, yes, reproductive organs, and also, and this is clearly stated, to be able to establish physical contact with deunan.

We also see them sleep in the same bed cuddling in some of the epilogues, we see Deunan get mad at him for finding Dr Matthew Silenus hiding under his sheets at the cyborg hospital, and Bri feeling embarrassed at Deunan's remarking out loud in a pub that "the massage last night left her exhausted". There's also the conversation in the not-so-confiscated sportscar at the beginning of book 3, although it's arguable if that confirms anything the others don't.

So this is a message to Masamune Shirow himself: if what would take from you to continue Appleseed is being able to show the two at it, go for it. I want to see it. For the sake of science, speculative science or pseudoscience.
