Empty error message, connection refused (Steam version)

Empty error message, connection refused (Steam version)

I bought the Witcher 2 during the Steam sale and every time I start it, I get an empty error message (with an "OK" button) and the launcher states "Connection refused, retrying in 10 seconds". The game runs fine after that but... this doesn't seem quite right.

I have tried reinstalling the Witcher 2, running the launcher without Steam, running both Steam, the launcher and the .exe as administrator, as well as download a utility that was supposed to fix registry errors with the Witcher 2. Nothing seems to work. It also seems there is no serial number with the Steam copy (unless it is hidden very well), so it seems I can't fill out a support ticket-thing on the site either...

Have you tried to temporarly disable your AV? Which AV you have? Same with the firewall (if you have any).

I suppose it is fully patched, right?

The other possibility is that there's something else running on your PC that's using most of your internet bandwidth? Or on someone else's PC if you're on a network? It sounds as though it's timing-out on the first attempt to connect.

I'm using avast! antivirus, and I've tried disabling it. No difference, still happens. I've turned off the Windows firewall too with the same results. There are other computers in the house, yes, but none of them are using any significant amount of bandwidth, and neither is mine.

I suppose it could be blocked by something... does the game use any particular port that might be blocked? How would I see that?

And yes, the game is fully patched at least, seeing as it is the Steam version, and has auto-updates set to on. (UPDATE: Checked the readme file, it does indeed contain the patch notes from version 2.1, which appears to be the latest version.)

Windows defender might stop the exe from running right off as can any other 3rd party malware programs that are installed if they are set to real time protection . You might also check Avast , sometimes it will attempt to sandbox an exe .

I don't think so, I can find no records in either Windows Defender or Avast where it stops the launcher from running (or anything else, for that matter, the lists are empty). And those are the only antivirus/anti-crap applications I have installed on my computer.

Hmm. Curious, I have never had any similar problems with any other games before.

I only said it was a possibility . Don`t know about now but in the past if you right click the witcher 2 from library you might be given the option to view cd-key if you wanted to fill out a support ticket . If none exists i would attempt to fill one out anyway .

It could also be a downstream issue, something to do with your ISP. Connectivity issues are fairly common occurences for me.

If you do want to contact support, you don't need the CD key to fill in a support ticket - just leave that field blank. (I'm a Steam user, and I've contacted support a couple of times without ever entering anything in that field).

Oh, of course. I didn't mean to come off as rude, and I am thankful for your suggestions :3

One interesting thing to add is that the little icon on the launcher actually switches to a lightning bolt (online) after I have been playing the game for a little while, but it still claims "connection refused".

Ah, I will try this then! I assumed it was a required field.

Nor did i . Another thing to note after the installation of the .NET 4.0 there should have been some windows updates . Did you get those .

I get the exact same problem, none of the suggested ways worked for me either.

I have the Steam version of the game, and I believe its in version 1.35, 'cause I played the 1.1 months ago and see some differences, if I dl the patch from the site to the v. 2.0, it will work? (I mean the update)

I get that a lot, and for me it's definitely an "internet running slow" issue. To be honest, if it isn't stopping you from playing the game, I'd just ignore it.

Regarding the internet connection refused, the same reply stands. If it isn't stopping you from running the game, ignore it. The internet connection is only used if you're playing the Arena and need to upload your high scores.

If you have the Steam version, you need to use the Steam patching, and you should NOT attempt to update using one of the patches from here. If you're getting this far, it sounds as though you're already up-to-date with the versions. Is the game playing OK?

For some magical reason, it works now! I don't know if CDPR sent out a patch and it auto-updated while I wasn't looking. But, uhm... if someone has a similar problem, I have no idea what the solution actually is :D

No, no update. It leads me to suspect that the problem was a slow connection and you were getting a timeout - your ISP has probably just fixed a faulty piece of network equipment. The Launcher isn't especially sophisticated.

Do you have other Steam games? Are they working? If so then you know Steam is working and is not the issue itself.

That said, check WIndows FIrewall - Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Firewall and click the link that says Allow a program or feature through Windows Firewall and make sure the check box for Witcher 2 is checked under the "Home/Work (Private)" column.

You can see what I'm talking about here - http://www.sevenforu...ame-issues.html under "Connection Problems with game managers???", right after tip 11

Let us know.
