Is there something personal between Shani and Triss in the books? I found their possessiveness over Alvin to be more unreasonable than could be explained by jealousy alone.EDIT: According to the wiki, it's canon that Triss loves Geralt, and has for some time. I can see a few reasons she'd get flippant when Geralt spills his guts to her in King Foltest's court. One, she's nervous, two, she's testing him, and the third is more complicated. She knows both of them wouldn't be able to give up their natures, his as witcher and hers as sorceress, to adapt to some domestic illusion, especially at a time like that, which she was trying to put in perspective for him. They would both be needed to do what it is they do, and in fact wouldn't have it any other way. Further, Alvin was symbolic of Geralt's child, since he can't have his own, and with him missing, Triss has less faith in her illusion of a future family. This 'Alvin as symbolic son' also explains the passion of Triss and Shani's rivalry; both are in love with Geralt, and having the boy with them as his protectors and teachers make them feel like they're nesting with Geralt.
