Can you list your system specs ? In general the C5 error id just a generic windows error that can mean anything from drivers to hardware .

There is another thread here that says if you`re using or have had installed the Lucid Logics software you would probably need to uninstall it as it creates problems .

Found it . http://en.thewitcher.com/forum/index.php?/topic/25691-fix-for-0xc0000142-error-for-me-at-least/

Downloaded The Witcher 2 through Steam the other day. Left it to finish installing overnight. When it was finally done (It's a large game) I tried clicking "Launch Game" but I got the error "The Application was unable to start correctly. Press OK to exit." I've done my research, I've been almost everywhere on the internet. I tried re-installing the game, verifying game cache, and just about everything else I could find online as a suggestion. Also, the game seems to perform first-time setup whenever I launch it, even though it obviously isn't the first time I launched it. Please, someone help me out here. I just want to play this game that I just spent my money on.

Attached is a DxDiag report with my system's specs.

Is the game updated to versione 2.1? if so, do not install the latest patch, abor the download if it's automatic. Play the game at version 2.0 only. A bug is occurring on patch 2.1, CDP is still working on it, and we are praying they'll release a fix soon.

I'm not sure what version the game is. I didn't do anything to it manually since downloading it. Where can I find the game version? If it's at 2.1, can I wipe all of the game'1s files from my computer and re-install it?

In you witcher 2 folder there is a readme.rtf file open it and at the top should tell you what patch you are on . I hesitate to say use the launcher as when you do that`s when the auto download starts.

Alright, I guess my game is version 2.1, which leads to my other question that I mentioned: If I completely erase all of the game's data and re-install it from Steam, can I manually update to 2.0 and then use the games executable directly instead of the launcher? Or is there an easier way than re-installation?

If you`re already at 2.1 then go ahead and play it . The hard parts over . As far as i know no changes to gameplay were involved in the patch . The big change is it should now be easier to upload your Arena scores .

EDIT : Had to go back to the first post . Sorry for the confusion .

Steam will just download as version 2.1 even if you uninstall and re-download, and there's no way to uninstall 2.1 or revert to 2.0, so really all we can do is wait until CDP releases a fix for it.

Actually, that's kinda the issue. I'm getting that error and it prevents me from playing. The whole point of this topic was for me to figure out whether this is caused by my game version being 2.1. I can't even play the game until I figure out how to stop the "0xc0000005" error... Wow and I just realized that I forgot to mention that in the original post...

My apologies for turning a relatively simple problem into a complex one. But regardless; assuming I can figure this out and just play the damn game, a huge thanks to you, Tommy, and secondchildren as well.

Now back to the matter at hand... The 0xc0000005 error. Why can't I fix it? As well as stop Steam from doing a first-time setup every time?

To put it short and sweet or not . The C5 error is a generic error that windows creates when it doesn`t know what the problem is which is about 90% of the time . It can include errors with drivers , system files , hardware and software alike . Which is why it`s so difficult to figure out a C5 error to a specific cause .

From what i`ve read some Steam users but not all when they start witcher 2 steam does a first time run where it downloads 680 some bytes or KB and then installs DX and the VC Redist. every time they start the game . Is this happening to you as well ?

There are some things you can do to eliminate that part of the process short of a system reinstall .
Before doing a game reinstall i would do a disc check just in case especially if you have had a power failure while working with your computer
After that do a system file check by clicking start>all programs>accessories and right click command prompt and select run as administrator and copy and paste this in the dialog box
sfc \scannow
If you decide to do a game reinstall try turning off the UAC in control panel>user accounts . Also if reinstalling game run steam and install the game as administrator .

Already check you have installed the latest NET Framework 4.0 version? If yes, the famous error can be avoid only skipping the latest patch 2.1. If it's automatic installed, abort the process. Keep the game at version 2.0 and enjoy.

Yes, it does a first time run every time I start it. I guess I'll try all the disc check options you gave. I actually did lose power in my house 3 or 4 times before during a thunderstorm. All while using the PC I am on. As far as running as Administrator, I always run Steam and the game itself as an Admin.

At the risk of yet again seeming like a moron........... What exactly do I check the disk with? Should I download a program online to check for damage or is there a program on my PC already that should do it?
