Expected framerate with GTX 980

Hey guys. First of all my PC specs.

gtx 980 gigabyte g1 gaming.
i7-4790k overclocked to 5.2ghz.
16 gigs of ddr3 ram ripjaws.

I heard a 980 should be able to get 60 fps max settings right with nvidia hairworks off, but sadly that was a lie. Even with foliage visibility range and shadows both set to high it can sometimes drop to the late 50s (very rarely) in certain weather environments mostly the windy weather. Is this normal? Anyone else have a gtx 980 or a similar setup that can confirm this. Thank you! Maybe I am just a stressing out too much or being a bit too fussy. Or maybe I am thinking too highly of my graphics card. Thank you!

I look forward to reading your replies.

Edit Reason: Just to add the highest I have gotten is 80 and the lowest is around 57. It only gets to 57 fps in certain weather environments which is weird. I usually get around 70 fps though. Dunno why it drops to 57. Thank you!

This my is PC:
i7 4790
16gigs 1866mhz
Gtx 980 WF3 OC on 1400Mhz

With hairworks Off and everything else maxed on 1080p I get way over 60fps. mostly in the 70s

With hairworks On and game is maxed on 1080p I get an average of 50-55 fps with the minimum fps beeing around 45 when geralts hair is too close to the screen,i guess this is because of the 8x MSAA filter on the hair.

I think you should drop a little from your OC on the CPU, is it even stable?
Overclock your GPU.

So....you are getting between 57 and 80 FPS....and you are complaining about this??? My advice to you would be to get a life. You CAN'T visually see the difference between 57 FPS and 60 FPS. Turn off your stupid frame counter and try to enjoy the game, yeah?

Honestly, you don't NEED to OC an i7 4790K for this game. I have an AMD FX 8350 stock speed @ 4.0, and it only caps out at 50% utilization across four of the eight cores. 50% utilization @ 4.0GHz with four cores is plenty. I run the game maxed out with an R9 290X and I get anywhere from 39 to 60 FPS. The frame rate doesn't matter to me too much, as long as the game is playable. (read above 30.0 FPS)

Pushing that Haswell chip to 5.0 GHz might be part of your problem as the witcher is CPU intensive. If you're looking for a bump in performance, then just use Turbo mode, as that will take you up to 4.4 GHz. You might also want to look into overclocking your GPU as well. Also ensure you're using the latest Nvidia drivers. There was some shenanigans going on at release between The Witcher, Nvidia, and tampering with drivers to make older cards run like crap. IIRC a small portion of those hi jinx bled over into the 980 architecture.

So, doesn't anyone else have the problem I do? I have plenty of FPS with my MSI 970 G4 but when I visit Novigrad or some other crowed place, I get so much lags. Do I have to open a thread on tech support to ask what the f is going on? So much spikes-lags that brake immersion.
And I use the latest drivers.

Those numbers seem valid for your setup.

If you're really that sensitive, for a smoother experience, i'd recommend using nvidia inspector to enable a 60 FPS limit in the driver profile.

EDIT: @everyone
PC games are NOT programmed to run at a stable FPS count. Unlike console games.
Nearly every PC game (that doesn't have an internal framelock) will have varying FPS depending on situation/load.
This is of course espacially appearent in new, demanding games.

Don't ask the the dev's to "fix" this .. it's not broken.

Its not same when you are in the wild and in the crowded place like Novigrad ,there are more assets in Novigrad than the trees in the forest ,its logical that frame rate would drop because your PC is trying to render more stuff on the monitor.

when buying the best graphics card for a consumer gaming desktop pc, one should be able to play the game in 1080p with all nvidia fx on at the highest values with 60 fps.

fps drops down to 57 will definately produce stutter compared to a locked fluid 60 fps.

if he paid 400 usd for a 970 you are right, he shouldn't complain, but if he paid 680 for a 980 (almost double price) for the BEST available HIGH END graphics card for consumer gaming (titan is not really for consumer gaming but for video and 3d apps and development and higher resolutions) he should be able to play games with settings maxed and all nvidia fx on at 1080p with a fluid 60 fps.

this is my point of view.

nvidia should make sure that their best and overly high priced luxury consumer gaming card should be able to do that and cooperate with the developers on this.

why do you blame the consumer who paid a LOT of money ? he paid that amount because he wanted fluid gameplay with all fx maxed and nvidia promises fluid and "best possible" gameplay. and fps drops and stutter ist just not best possible gameplay to me.

we are talking luxury class equipment here, not economy class.

What you need to do is to go into your Nvidia settings and change Max Pre-rendered frames to 1.

Sorry, but that is absolute nonsense! Stuttering may be caused by incorrect Nvidia settings or even Windows power settings. Slight framerate fluctuations does not automatically cause stutters.
I also have a GTX 970, along with a quality motherboard, quality power supply, quality RAM etc etc....(you can see where I am going with this) and with the correct settings, my game runs absolutely smoothly in all situations with a framerate of mid-50's at a 2K resolution.

Sorry but PC hardware has never, and will never work like this.
PC architecture is all about flexibility, backwards compatibility, etc.

You are assuming two constants (resolution and framerate) that simply aren't there,
despite all the marketing gags company XY might try to sell you..

There have always been games that do not run perfect on max settings, even on the latest hardware.
And we can all just HOPE that it stays that way. Game developers pushing boundaries is what's been
driving the hardware market forward for the last 20 years...

is it ? ;) turn around endlessly with a controller stick, make a camera movement and you will see that the fluid motion is broken. even more so with a tv screen set to 60 hz if the fps is not locked and suddenly drops to 3 fps less.

It was really kind of you to inform me about this. My lags on crowded places are at least 50% off.

Nope. Just nope. Remember Far Cry, Crysis and even The Witcher 2 eras? Even the best GPUs couldn't run these with max settings. And nobody was whining about it, we just knew more power was needed.

If one wants to play all games available maxed out at 1080p 60+fps, one gets information on all GPUs available on the market and buy a GTX 980ti.

Seriously OP, how is that a problem to get 57-80fps? ??? I get 35-55fps with my GTX 970 though I am not about to sue neither Nvidia nor CDPRed. I jsut blame my wallet.

Some joker guy on youtube talked to a developer at CD projekt red and they said a single gtx 980 should be able to max this game with hairworks off. I struggle to keep around 60 fps if I have foliage visibility range on ultra as well as shadows. They both need to be on high. How come other people like the sz0ty0l4 who replied to this thread say he can get 70 fps on ultra with hairworks off. I think my computer is screwed or something. :(

---------- Updated at 01:40 PM ----------

Also I ran prime95 for 12 hours. My CPU is stable!

That is comforting to read that you are only getting 35-55 fps. Is that with hairworks on or off? Thanks!

With Hairworks ON. 35fps when the camera gets close to Geralt's hair inside houses. Framerate is otherwise between 45 and 55fps.

OP, you really need to edit the title of this thread because as you are finding out, you are woefully ill-informed.

Need to listen to what people like Dubya are saying.

I have a 980 myself and it does more or less what you listed in the first post - drops a bit (into the low 50's or so) when there's alot of assets to draw, such as a fight in woods with lots of particles and wind, or on a busy street with tons of NPCs and background scenes to draw. It's normal.

Finally, to echo some of the others, you quoted a "...developer at CD projekt red and they said a single gtx 980 should be able to max this game with hairworks off". This is true, obviously. "Max out" means able to run with all effects and continue to play when the FPS inevitably drops due to normal circumstances. It does NOT mean the game will remain @ 60FPS no matter what.
